I personally wouldn't use grant/student loan money to do car work (again). I used loan money leftover from school to buy some car parts/motorcycle/you name it, and the interest rate just isn't worth it man.
I know it seems like modding cars is the most awesome thing, but in all honesty it's not priority when it comes to loan money (unless you need to fix a car that is actually broken).

If its all cash we are talking about, then go forth and conquer! But if it will be loans (my school was paid for with loans), I'd say stash the leftover for emergencies.

Here's to wishing I did some things differently.
