What oil do you use?

Just curious as to what people use out there in their sedans.
I know it is an older car and people are hesitant to run synthetic. . so. . lets see what the majority is. .

I personally use conventional oil for the car. . .ran synthetic once when i needed oil badly and was about 500 miles away from home, it was the only thing i could get from a fellow traveler. .so i ended up blending regular with syn (long story) but when i did my next oil change. . i went back to conventional oil. .
EF2dudesocal

i use conventional oil but if i were to get my swap like a b18 or something with vtec ill run full synthetic.
C-Rex

I usually use semi syntethic Castrol Magnatec 10w40 and will probably stay with that for the b16 build too

Sorry. . . I mean that for "EF2dudesocal"  .he would switch to synthetic cause of a motor swap?  I have had two and have always used conventional. . . car was brought to life with it. . so. . i might as well stick to it. . .
ed3tsmith

i use conventional. Penzoil 5w30 high mileage vehicle
EF2dudesocal

Synthetic oils have really progressed, and claim to extend engine life beyond what conventional oils could hope for.

Just because it was made at the same time as the car, doesn't mean it's the best for it! I have to buy oil within the next few day's. I haven't voted on the poll yet, mainly because i don't remember what oil is in it. But i'll report back when i get my new stuff.

TRUE. . .also. . conventional is cheaper. . .heheheheh!

More important than what kind you use is how often you change it.  Just use a good quality name brand oil and make sure you change it often.  Synthetic does seem to have benefits, but some of those benefits come out as the oil gets older.  If you change the oil as often as you should, the difference between synthetic and conventional is less.  At less than half the price, I use good conventional oil in all my cars.

Not true, but i will state that my CRX has been running Mobil 1 since its 3 oil change, and it doesn't burn any, still has yet to leak a drop, but when i do its first timing belt here this winter, i will put a new VC gasket crank and cam seal.

And the DOHC F24B Vtec will get the same treatment.

Synthetic oils are as the name implied, synthetic, so all properties of that oil are inherent of the molecule, not an additive, all those molecules are the same size also.  So really the only 2 reasons to change synthetic oil is,  As an oil is used, its collects contaminates and holds it in suspension so it doesn't deposit itself on bearing surfaces, and comes out when you change the oil, conventional oil does with the addition of detergents, which break down.  Reason 2, some metals and particles picked up by the oil make the oil acidic,  And that you don't want sitting in your engine, so its always a good practice to let an engine sit with fresh oil in it.

Both these hold true for petroleum based oil, but the multi viscosity properties of conventional oil are done with polymers which break down, so eventually your running a straight weight oil, so if you run 5w30, your left with straight 5 weight, pretty thin, and if you run 10-30, then left with straight 10 weight.  Heat is the biggest killer of these thats why air cooled motorcycles and cars usually call for 20W-50 and your lawnmower straight 30 weight. Valvoline makes up to straight 60 for racing, we sell it at my work.

Well enough about oil, lets see what all of you run.

Oh yeah, how often do i change? every 6 months, however much mileage that is, could be 2500, or 8000.  But i always use ether Mobil 1 filter, or Ams oil filter.  If unavailable i use a purolater pur1

Good read, thanks for the post. I'm still yet to buy oil.
C-Rex

FYI magnetic oil drain plug bolt $2.99 at autozone looks like the spoon.

JDQCIVIC4DR

89civicracer since you went back to conventional oil anything different?
hondacivicdx

Well in the 89 honda accord before the wreck it was penzoil 10-30
but now i don't know mabey the same??? What do you guys think?? AND why???  Confused
hondacivicdx

What is 5-30 w  for i thought you could not use that in your car??
hondacivicdx

sp have you done your oil and which brand, i am looking at eneos
5-30
~Sp33~

I think sticking between 10W-30 is safe. I think that's what went in my car.
jkgonzalez3

MEH don't feel like reading all that ^

but you should run 10w30 and if your has miles on it DO NOT RUN syntetic your shit will leak lol
Foxcow

I use Valvoline high mileage Synthetic blend 10W-30 with Puralator filters.
ef9racer

maxlife sin blend with fram filter
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Royal Purple FTW!
lxKruzer

i prefer conventional. i currently have 5w-30 cause its what i had in my garage. more then likely at next oil change i will get something heavier.

Nope . . .same ol thing. . The car does not leak. . I do check it regularly, sometimes i need to add, but not sure where it goes.
Maybe has something to do with the high compression or something?

It's not uncommon for an engine to use some oil.
hondacivicdx

Ok i talked to  Tim wang(lubricant manager for eneos oil) He told me that if your car does not leak now it would be fine to run 5-30
anything else would be just useless. but the 5-30 would be great if your car does not leak oil, So i will wash the bottom of my car off, and see if i have any oil leaks before i purchase this product. ive got a one month before i need to change my oil, if  its leaking then i will go with something else, if it's not leaking Eneos here i come.
and mabey a hamps filter. Ive  done some research on filters, and its pretty much the same on filters most dont change much, only a few. Check out the reviews on hamps filters compared to others.
I think fram is one of the worst, paper breaks down quicker.
LsdailySedan

I feel synthetic is better for harder driving conditions but for daily driving and low rpms i would go with conventional and just change it more often because its cheaper

I run castrol
BLKEF4DR

YEAH I USE CASTROL  10W40  ALWAYS
