The bboy resto-mod by projEKtjokes

Here we go... So I'd like to start by thanking those before me that have inspired my love for the make and model. This thread will be primarily dedicated to my 91 LX but I'm sure ill sneak in a few random sluts from time to time.

STORY TIME:

So picked up this wip in the fall of 2012 iirc and the only issue it had was what I suspect to be a single bad cylinder ring causing small but noticeable smoke from the tail pipe. Still runs and drives great for a 23yr old dpfi car. Two owners and was only passed to a younger sibling within the last two yrs, so the typical dirty teenager damage was still minimal and in the interior mostly. All original equipment aside from the typical mechanical replacement parts. I couldn't be happier with this purchase, still the best one to date and what a steal at $550 delivered to my house. No pics of her upon arrival but she's untouched beside the 01-05 civic hybrid wheels.

BruhMan

$550 is a fuckin steal! That's a clean ass sedan you got there dude...
projEKtjokes

As some of you remember I mentioned the gold sedan I previously owned and just bought again. Well ive been hard at work trying to finish that one up as well so I thought I'd share some of It's progress.

Had a bad dizzy and sat for 3yrs on the side of an aquantainces shed. It had some 17x7 rims on it the day I bought it, I immediately traded for some stock 13's with good tires lol. In an attempt fix the problem everything besides the actual distributor was taken off or misplaced Mad needless to say I was disappointed to see the car like this. I made my buddy's friend an offer not knowing what the problem was yet, based off my knowledge of the car when I onwed it. I knew the major service parts had been changed and I had put at least $400 worth of parts into the car originally so that's what I offered and he of course jumped at it.. Should've said $100 to start.. Oh well. No pics of the car in shambles but I'm glad.. wasn't a pretty sight but here she is before paint and running.

Decided I had everything layin around for an obd1 conversion and using the original parts wasn't going to be an option since half of the parts were now broken or misplaced. So I gathered my parts and got it knocked out the next day. Low and behold she fired right up after the second crank over, old gas and all! Now I knew I had the Midas Touch by Midnight Star. Next up was paint...

Started tearing apart the body the following weeks when I was in town from work and had some decent weather. Very pleased to see the body didn't further decompose the last few yrs.

Driver side rear quarter.

Passenger side rear quarter.

Had to hit the front and rear bumper trim with a heat gun too of course...
projEKtjokes

Now she was fully prepped up and ready for a new dress. Lucky for me I live in norther Utah where we can see all four seasons in a week.. It dumped snow the day before it was going to paint. Oh well nothing new hibernation garage mode again.

I pulled off the fake ass jmaggs to try and trade for some 14" oem wheels with newer tires but the deal fell through. So I had another serious guy and his buddy stop by and buy not only those rims but a spare set of crx blades and numerous other parts I had laying around for d series cars. During there time at my house his buddy kept inquiring about the sedan and asking about its history etc. He jokingly made me an offer before they left to which I declined. He took my number down for some other parts he wanted to buy at a later time and that was that. Or so I thought.. Turns out he really was interested in goldy locks and called a week later and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. Sold it a few weeks ago as it sat fully prepped with the new paint I bought and the extra replacement parts to go with.
projEKtjokes

So I was a lil sad to see goldy locks leave my life again but shes got a good man in her life now that can properly care for her.

On to the next one right? Yep! Found another one I liked, 91 LX that had da integra interior already but she was definitely a battered and abused woman. Not to mention it wasn't exactly a drivable car yet. The guy had told me he was driving and the car lost power and stopped on the freeway.. Ya classic story I know but I like to think im decent at troubleshooting these older Hondas. So I looked at the car for about 30 mins and was still stumped.. Went back the next day to check it out again and looked at few other things closely. Started right up and went into gears easily but no movement?? Transmission maybe but it was going in gears? Broken axles? Both APPEAR to be new with untorn boots... Turns out that actually the outer joint on the drivers axle was broke and the shaft could be seen spinning while in a gear. So now that I singled out the problem I just needed a good price. Made a lowball offer and replaced the axle in the guys appt complex and was on my way. Really nice guy offered me a joint before I left for my troubles lol.

projEKtjokes

The car had some surface rust but overall nothing major.

projEKtjokes

The actual reason I bought the car was solely because I had a both a 88/89 and 90/91 blue armrests and audio console. That's how bad my problem has become with these cars lol just matching cars to parts. So I got to work again trying to actually get a car painted and finished up for a local spring meet. Stripped it down the very next day and bought paint supplies the following weekend.

Classic frost white very subtle.

Hard to tell from the pics but this car actually came equipped with accessory fender guards. Unfortunately it was missing the passenger rear but I'll hang on to them anyways for now.

My favorite part of body tear down is seeing how many side molding clips I can save...

FLAWLESS VICTORY.(one clip isn't in the pic because I found it after I took the back seat cushion out?)

Quick comparison before and after body work using only body tools, excuse my dirty hands prints should've washed the panels after.

New hood was on its way but no longer for this car.

Also decided to clean up the bay a lil bit. Seriously thought about a obd1 conversion again but this car ran perfect so pass on that grass.

Da ugly bishes are always nicer on the inside Razz...

projEKtjokes

So now, two weeks later I just got back in town from work and have a few people I need to link up with for mechanic work. Another enthusiast I had recently met through a business contact had me buy a few parts for an unrelated Honda project of his..So he stops by to pick his parts while I'm knee deep like funkadelic in this teardown and asks about this sedan... yada yada yada he buys the sedan.

So now I can focus purely on the red sedan, the 87 and 97 hatchbacks again. In the meantime my wifes beloved eg sedan is getting the frost white paint and being sold. She's been wanting a new acura but since I hate car payments shes had to wait til we were more financially stable.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Wow, you've been through a lot.  Glad to see you're still in the game though.  Can't wait to see how the white one turns out.  The red one is super clean.

Thanks, I take it you got a gold sedan? I'd like to check it out, probably my fav color.

The red one is far from super clean but I'd like to eventually make it somewhat comparable to yours in terms of cleaness. The white girl was just a fling Razz I'm a sucker for my redhead lol.

Yezzir...well its flat black right now...the guy i bought it from spray bombed...I am going back to the OG color tho...
projEKtjokes

Spent some time cleaning up the interior yesterday for a while. Started taking the seats out to give everything a good vacuum and shampoo. The previous owner must've spilled his cheap cologne somewhere, I couldn't get the smell out for the life of me so everything was getting cleaned. At this point I noticed the front driver seat was replaced with a dif model seat, and since I like all my seat fabric matching I decided it was time to just swap the interior. Since the 95 sedan is stripped down and being prepped to get sold I've been wanting to swap its black seats into my sedan. Never attempted this combination in this old of a chassis but it went in with surprisingly little mods.

Out with old...

Came up on a fresh MTV medallion from the 90's lol

In with the new 00' Acura EL interior

Some people complain that when attempting to put EK chassis front seats in EFs they sit to high, well this is only true if you leave the stock ek rails on but I have found a way to swap only the outter rail and replace a single piece on the EK seats to bolt-in and sit the same as the Ef. I'm 6'2 and no knees wackin the dash or steering wheel for me. I actually prefer these seats quite a bit since the actual butt pan portion of the seat is much deeper with more padding for prolonged driving.

~Sp33~

That white one came up pretty good! Nice work
EF Sedan Enthusiast

I really like those seats.  Good job.

Very Happy
projEKtjokes

Just got back fro OKC, time to grind again. Had a few things I've been meaning to add to the interior. Also decided to tint the windows since nobody likes triple digit summers and blinding snow in the winters is annoying. I'm also due for a new windsheild next week sometime.

Last pic before tint..

And after...

projEKtjokes

I've also managed to acquire everything I need to get a decent b swap in this sedan.

Thought I needed another car in case I get carried away with the sedan and my hatchbacks this year. 04' RSX nothing special, all leather 107k and one owner so I couldn't pass it up. Will get a 05/06 facelift and new booty is all.

Never seen those alloys on a civic and I have to say I love it!

89ef2 wrote:

Appreciate that, I've grown to like them more since they are a bit of an oddball oem alloy. I get asked what there off of allot lol.

Next order of business is to sort out the audio situation. Current setup is a basic jvc cd head unit rated at 40w per channel with a kenwood 800w amp and single kicker 10" sub. More than fine for this car and just enough bump to enhance music without overpowering.

I know a few oem head units are comparable so I always look for the best accessory decks to use in my cars.. not a big fan of having my car stolen over a flashy stereo. Most of us know Honda had great oem stereos made by pioneer, alpine, clarion ect. So I wanted something nice but stronger than a basic head unit to use in this car with a Line Output Converter to keep a small amp/sub. After much research I decided on a gathers head unit made by clarion along with the fold out tv tuner. However finding the clarion media tuner is harder than I thought so my backup plan is a kenwood made accessory deck for the 96-99 Honda Horizon and the cd slave deck from the same model rebadged Acura SLX 98/99.

This will do for now Smile

Should look right at home in the audio console.

TheGreatBacon

Awesome collection of radios, if you are interested in selling any I am also a collector. Dig the progress so far!

Thanks, I have quite a few in storage also so if your interested in a certain variation lmk, I try to buy them every chance I get but ive actually been on the hunt for the accessory cd player for any 88/89 or 90/91 Civic stereos... Recently lost the gathers one on eBay to someone on nwp or here I suspect lol.

I'd def be interested in trading for 84-87 civic parts.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

It was me Very Happy How much for the 3000?
projEKtjokes

Sneaky mofunka lol I don't have a 3000 for sale but I have multiple 1000's and 88/89 style decks.

Took a break from body work to clean the dirty rain off the sedan today, also gave the bay a good rinse so it won't be so dirty when I pull this old heart out.

~Sp33~

So clean. I wanna get my daily tinted, but it still has all the factory decals on the inside of the glass which would have to be removed.... Tough call!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Haha but yeah looking good dude.  Interesting choice with the 35 decal and the EX emblem.

Def a tough call, if I had the OK decals in good shape id most likely leave them bare as well.

EF Sedan Enthusiast wrote:

Ya when I put them on I had thought it would be unique to look like it says "3SEX" but I think I'll switch them eventually to "SLX" to match the stereo and new theme of the car since the oem restore idea was dropped.
projEKtjokes

Been a while...

Haven't had nearly as much free time as before but I've still been working on the wips on my off time. Freshly back from Colorado I knew there was a few issues I needed to address on the sedan. I was really tired of the lack of power from this old tired motor so I bought all the swap parts for a spare b18a1 I had, but after a few junk yard trips locally I wasn't able to find the rear t-bracket I needed..So I decided to throw the z6 from my 93 sedan into the 91 for the time being. Semi rebuilt motor w y8 intake mani, msd wires, ngk iridium plugs, as efficient as I need. I also found a fidanza flywheel while cleaning the garage so I threw that on also. I didn't expect crazy power but it's def a noticeable upgrade that I can appreciate. I needed to convert to obd1 anyways so this saves me a lil time later. chipped p28 running Crome for now.

Had to switch the o2 sensor wiring a few times but no check engine lights now Smile

Catching the sights on the road...

Saw this fresh jdm mitsu microvan in Idaho. For sale btw if you wanna burn 6gs.

projEKtjokes

That's not all I've been up to lately tho.. Bought some tires for the rims I had and picked up a k20a3, Ive really been wanting to try the a2 cam swap on one of these so here's my chance. Not sure what I plan to use it in yet, just one of those implulse buys. I also bought front and rear replacemt seats for the rsx and bought another sedan! Well technically I didn't buy it and it doesn't run but I had to save it lol. For a small exchange of a zc head, z6 intake mani and obd1 conversion parts I became the proud owner of this 88 dx.. never owned an 88 even a dx, or even silver for that matter, funny thing was I didn't realize there was no trunk pop or steering wheel lock on the 88 dx lol. Its not all bad tho, interior looks to be in decent shape surprisingly and was an a/c equipped car. It's super rough now but it will be gettin some love asap.

TheGreatBacon

Good to see an update from you man, the red sedan is coming along great. The DX looks like it has seen better days though.. I really like the fact that 88/89 DX don't have rear headrests. Strange that yours doesn't have a steering wheel lock, mine does. Maybe it was optional? Who knows, what are your plans for it?
projEKtjokes

Thanks bacon, Ya never came across a civic without the steering wheel lock so I'll have to investigate that more. Now that I've spent a few hrs messin w it I'm seriously contemplating just throwing that k in it since its so light. Otherwise I've got a d16a1 I've been meaning to rebuild that would fit right at home in this lil guy. Plans are to sort the body out this week while im home and send it to paint by the end of the month.

Spent a good hour fixing the trunk latch and decided to see if I could bring the rear bumper back to life after looking at the crusty ass all afternoon. Not too bad if I say so myself.

She's wanted me to see her inner beauty Wink

~Sp33~

Come up awesome! What did you use?
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good stuff dude and I would slap the K in the DX for sure.
projEKtjokes

~Sp33~ wrote:

Thanks, I just used my heat gun on the low setting making small circular motions to bring the oils back out of the polyurethane.

EF Sedan Enthusiast wrote:

Appreciate it, Ya im thinking this is the route I'm gonna go, just want to do some more research into what's all envolved w this swap in the 4g chassis.
projEKtjokes

Finally got this back this afternoon and had to test fit it. Needs to be restored before I use it, so happy the badge and mounting points are still in tact..

89 LX SOHC ZC

that  bumper looks amazing and we need a better look at that rear wing.

projEKtjokes

Here's some slightly better pics..

Really diggin the profile.

As you can see its in pretty poor condition and I've never done any restoration work on foam composite before so I think I'll have to find a specialist somewhere who can help me out.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

That's gonna be dope!
89 LX SOHC ZC

That thing is awesome.
TheGreatBacon

Oh baby, that spoiler is the tits.
projEKtjokes

Thanks fellas, I'm sure you can agree nothing feels better than finding og parts.

Got dumped on the last few days with a fair amount of rain so I've been doing what I can finding parts online and cleaning the garage up a bit. I hate letting it get cluttered up and I've been out of town so much recently it got kind of bad lol.

Gonna repurpose the dtr header off my 97 hatchback for the new motor temporarily until I can get something else.

Gonna throw these hand me down set of rear mud flaps on the 88, found the missing speaker cover I needed. Think I'm gonna try to find a set of 14" or 15" steelies also, gonna keep the oem appearance.
projEKtjokes

I started polishing out the oem trunk rack last night but I got lazy so I'll start again tomorrow since I couldn't get around to it today either.

Found a pn I never noticed on the underside but haven't found any info on it yet..Maybe someone else can?

Scored a rare Eg accessory deck and came across some rare oem documents I couldnt pass up; first edition 88 civic owners manual/warranties, I already had them one but ive never seen the early green variation and different warranty booklet. They resemble the 87 civic booklets more closely with the gradient logo. Included w the bundle was an immaculate cruise control instruction tag to replace my not so perfect one, a Honda 1000 stereo booklet and original Dunlop wheels warranty. I've got quite a few 1990 specific booklets if anyone needs a set for there car..

projEKtjokes

Taking advantage of the overcast day today. Started on the cleanup of the dx and wanted to get a good start on the bodywork and rust removal. Started off by grinding around the winsheild then my angle grinder decided to crap out :/  Then I moved on to the passenger side fender which was the only major dented panel on the car. I have quite a mess of glass to vacuum out too from the passenger window shattering.

Somehow I remembered it better coming off the trailer at 9pm lol. Oh well not the worst I've had but def top 3 for sure.

Had to get the rear seats out asap the rear back was broke in half from someone who couldn't get the trunk popped supposedly. I'm thinking I'll hit the junky hard and find some decent replacement front and rears.

projEKtjokes

This was right where I started but it started to come away pretty easily w a 40 grit sanding disc.

This is the passenger rear which is mostly small surface rust fortunately.

Too bad the driver side wasn't as nice.. But it will only require a small amount of welding.

The fender came out better than I could've hope for. An ice cold beer feels good on my throbbing forearm after an hour of steady pounding Razz

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Wow you've got a lot of word ahead of you but I love seeing someone say these beauties!  The literature is very cool.  Would love to see some more of the tire warranty.
89civicracer

Good luck on the build..  car
~Sp33~

Saw this:

And was like, i guess that's better. Then realised that was still a progress pic haha. Looks much better now!

Good luck chasing that rust without taking the windshield out though.  Mad  Could be a hard one.
projEKtjokes

Haven't spent much time on the sedans lately.. Ef them! I've been giving the rsx and 87 hatchback some love too. I'm finding out just how much work the k swap is to put into the Ef chassis and I haven't even started but it will def be worth it. I also swapped out the p28 in my red sedan for another chipped version better suited for it. It's been giving me a tdc code and I'm not quite sure why, ecu has been double triple checked as has the distributor, jumper harness, wiring and every other possible component. Ive now been told by a few other Ef owners that it could be possibly due to the ecu being out of a Canadian model for some reason?? Never once heard of or had this issue with any other obd1 swapped cars, but the car runs fine with the other p28. The chipped p28 also works fine in every other car we tested it on except Ef obd1 swapped cars??? Other than that new wheels bought and sold and restoration continues slowly with with I've dubbed the "88 blade runner".

Sold these since my car isn't lowered didn't like the look.

A lil paint stripper brought the headlights back like new, they appear to be in great shape too the spraypaint must've protected the glass Razz

And a quick pic of the interior after hours with the vacuum and shampooer. I cleaned the original interior and seats which came up great but I decided to keep them for a later project. Gray is good color to have so instead I put in some teg seats.. Ya ya typical but there nicer and more readily available im starting to hoard any original parts for a rainy day since they are fastly approaching extinction also.

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Looking good dude and it sounds like you've got a ground issue or maybe an O2.  What wheels will you go with?
projEKtjokes

EF Sedan Enthusiast wrote:

O2 sensor is new but I'll have to check the distributor ground for continuity again. Thanks for the suggestion, and as for wheels I'll be going with some Enkei 82's (15x6.5+35 iirc) I love the early 90's look. I'm waiting on the final center cap from the guy I purchased them off of.

Finally got around to replacing the rear door panels and passenger window that was broke out. Also bought rear 88/89 rear floor mats off a friend but I'm still hunting for some gray front mats.

So I pretty much put the k series idea on hold temporarily until I can find someone locally experienced with doing the swap in efs. I'll continue picking up swap parts as fast as my budget allows, but in the meantime another surprise showed up over the weekend...

B16a w gsr cable trans. I have what I need to put this swap in easier for the time being since I'm broke.

TheGreatBacon

Nice progress man, always enjoy your build(s). Is there a 88/89 grey DX sedan at a junk yard near you? I have been looking for a few interior bits.
