Psychoblue23's 89 LX Project thread

So let me toss in some quick details.

Its not going to be a race car, it will not get a turbo... no new paint fancy suspension etc etc.. It will however, get as much maintenance as I can for as little money as possible. The whole reason for the purchase is to save cash. I no longer have a truck payment, $250 a month gas bill.. or $115 insurance bill so jsut owning this car saves me almost $600 a month.

Future Plans are as follows:
New Shocks/springs to replace blown sagging factory parts
New Tires to replace the bald ones that are on there now
100k Tune up
Misc ext/int detailing to make the car feel a bit nicer

So here we go!

1989 Civic Sedan LX
126,470 miles
Automatic D15b2
Gold/Brown-Tan
Power everything + A/C

nice plans, and good luck with the build.  Very Happy
psychoblue23

Thank you!
mrnurse

good plan and looks like a nice car for a start. I did a swap to a dohc zc.....easy swap still looks factory. just need to re connect the ac..... and fix the heater line leak. I will be further modding mine though. good luck.
psychoblue23

Thanks nurse! I plan to do minor stuff, but nothing major. I did pick up some bottle cap wheels today for $80 that are SUPER clean. I also scored an armrest.. so I will get photos of those up tomorrow when I put in the new shocks/springs
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Welcome!  Maintenance first is the way to go before modding.  Will you be lowering it at all or doing any other mods?
Edison Carasio

Will it be staying an automatic?
psychoblue23

So the plan WAS to find some aftermarket parts that were close to OEM to liven up the suspension without going all crazy and dumped. Apparently I should have done better research because I thought the S-techs were on the closer to stock end of the spectrum as far as lowering springs... I was wrong.

Old

New

Did a test fit of the wheels. They sit much better than the steel wheels. Little more "flush" unfortunately I did not have the correct lugs to bolt them up. By the time I found some it was too late to go buy tires. Hopefully today during lunch break I will have new tires for these wheels.

Here is how the car sits now with new shocks and springs

Tein S-Techs for 88-91 Civic
KYB GR2's
185/65/14 Steel wheels

The issue now is that the exhaust is VERY low to the ground. I am hoping I can either get it re-welded to get it maybe an inch or so higher up, or replace the whole thing with a new unit that can be mounted higher up. If anyone has some input, I would like to purchase a new muffler anyways.

As for the Auto, I am open to changing it to 5spd.. Would help with mileage also. However, I will focus on getting it back to a better running condition before I go that far with the mods. I did however, get a 5 spd center console unit with an armrest this weekend. So when/if I do swap, I will be ready![/img]

I cant wait to see it with the bottle caps should look good.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

The drop looks good and the bottle caps should look great once they're installed.

I would just take your sedan to a muffler shop and ask them.  They should have a solution for you.
psychoblue23

^^ Deff plan to do this on my next day off.

Here is a really annoying cell pic to hold you over until I clean up the car and take a few nicer shots.

Im very very very happy with the new tires/suspension. Its a bit harder than I wanted, but at least I gain some points in handeling. Also, to have something that resembles factory wheels with well balanced tires makes driving much better. Once the car is washed and waxed shell look great.
Jerseys_fyn3st

Car looks good man,
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Yeah!  Would also be a good idea to buy some trim paint and freshen things up a little.
~Sp33~

Looks nice on the bottlecaps!

I say keep it auto, auto daily's are the best.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Looks good man.
psychoblue23

Thanks guys!

As for faded black on the bumpers.. I am Definitely fixing those!
psychoblue23

So the interior was FILTHY..

Money shot. Yes, all 90 hp of fury right there fellas..

Vaccumed and wiped it all down so its nice and clean now!

So its leaking pretty bad. From what I know for sure, its the valve cover gasket, and behind the distributor.

Not bad under the VC, so thats good. No sludge or anything scary. Oil isnt even that dark either. I do have oil in 2 of the 4 spark plug tubes, so I changed all the seals and grommets on the VC. Hoping that does the trick.

Was expecting this to be much worse, but with just some warm soapy water it came right off.

psychoblue23

Dome light was pathetic in this car.. so I went on brightleds.com and picked up part #3022 - CWHP4

Also, changed the Fuel Filter and my leaking hose last night.

89 d15b2 1.5 Fuel Filter Part #: 16101-SH3-K52

This hose behind the Valve Cover is Part #: 19507-PM5-A00

Before:

After:

These are the issues I will be addressing next!

Got some photos of underneath the car. Its much worse than I thought.

Steering rack is leaking bad..

Here you can see the condition of the belts.. yup there all like this.. and the oil pan is leaking like crazy as well.

jon_akers

My god, your carpet looks amazing. Mine is worn through in the back seat floor area.....

Love the brown interior.

That belt has a few more miles left in it?! Wink

EDIT:  Is that warm white or Cool white? I'm gonna have to order one of those leds.

Cool white sir, deff worht the 6 bux! I also bought one for the trunk light only mine does not work, so once I order a new one I wil test it out.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice work man im going to look into the led dome light.
psychoblue23

Yea the light is a major increase in light ouput. Just enter your car info and it will show you all they carry for what particular light.

I also purchased the third brake light bulb.. but due to the way it installs it was not much of a diff. I plan on upgrading the reverse lights next since one of mine is out anyways.
Robb

Nice. I had the same maintenance issues you have when I bought my 88 sedan last week.. nothing major.. its all been taken care of and the car runs like a top with amazing low fuel consumption !
Cool

btw, theres a brown lower console for sale on hondatech crx/ef classifieds.

psychoblue23

I did see that, thanks Robb. Did you see my link for the grey one I found?

$250 is far more than I am willing to pay, tho it would look very cool. I snagged a armrest from Levi from DSO so I will put that in and be happy. Although it is black so well see how it goes.

Yes I did.. but its in bad shape. Im picky.
psychoblue23

Yea.. I am buying the dpfi swap on the previous page.. Had I not needed that so bad, I would most likely have gotten that center console!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Love the brown interior!  I also love how detailed this thread is getting!  Keep up the good work and keep us posted  Very Happy
psychoblue23

We all (including myself) love pics so yea, details are fun.

Speaking of pics.. I bought this last night

I think after this will be a 5 spd swap and my major mods will be done. Ca will have normal acceleration, decent fuel mileage, but will still be enjoyable to drive.
Robb

Get an HF tranny = amazing fuel consumption.

Btw, you get better mileage with the stock motor/manifold, since it has only 2 injectors.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Very true, but MPFI is so much more fun + 5 speed.

I cant see how this would be true... I have to literally FLOOR the gas pedal just to get this dog over a hill and cant creep past 60 mph.. I figure with the better acceleration, and 5 spd wouldnt it be less work on the engine equaling less fuel consumption? Not to mention the rpms on the freeway would drop as well.. as it sits right now with the dpfi/auto I sit at about 3100 rpms doing about 65 mph

The HF tranny you talking about, is that from the CRX that supposably got liek 50 mpg? I will have to ask around. I wonder fi they are hard to find around here.

With the Si 5th gear, it still revs high at 65MPH...
With the HF gear, it will rev lower. (acts like an overdrive gear)

You can't buy the CRX HF 5th gears anymore, get the 92-00 EX 5th instead, or better yet try and find an HF used tranny.

Your gas mileage likely won't change enough to notice without tuning the ECU as well.... and HF CRX's have smaller intake snorkels too.

btw. most cars that are GREAT on gas are slow... LoL

Thx Robb!
psychoblue23

So in I don't know about March, I was in an accident. Some one directly in front of me decided to stop at a green light and I don't know, I guess my attention was elsewhere and I could not stop in time. Soooo the car was smashed in the front.

I have been swamped with work and doing a lot of training for some cycling stuff coming up, so the car was just sitting until this past Saturday.

I had to replace:

Rad support
Radiator
Rad hoses
Hood

There is still visible damage, but I can live with it for a while. I have a ton of maintenance to do to the car, so that will take priority. I also have everything I need for the mpfi swap.

This is how she sits right now

After the repair... I need a bumper and the 2 pieces that go between hood/bumper

Little bit of rear damage but ehh.. no care..

4dred6

thank god you are ok. car doesnt look that bad.
89civicracer

I've got the 88-89 bumper filler piece and plastic grill..
Problem is shipping that long piece of metal to Cali.
When i got it from the dealership years ago, they had to send it to me twice because one got mangled... LMK if you are interested, i can try to secure it in a large box and put some wood in there to secure it.  Wink
psychoblue23

Thanks civicracer, for now I will wait. When I decide to replace it, and if I can not find it locally I will contact you.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Still looks good sorry to hear about your misfortune.
psychoblue23

So I went back over the car to see how bad these "minor" repairs are. Man, this car needs a lot of work.

Front/Rear Brakes
Pads need to be replaced, fluid is low but there are no signs of leaks
Rotors feel warped as there is vibration under braking
Rear drums need to be inspected
Parking Brake adjusted (needs to be pulled all the way up)

Multiple exhaust leaks

Belts are bad.. See for your self..

Oil Leaks:

Oil Pan gasket
steering rack (Should just replace entire unit)
Lower spark plug tube seals (under rocker assembly)

Rear passenger door does not open. From inside or out
Wind shield spray nozzles missing
Stereo not hooked up properly, no sound from speakers
The rear seats have seen better days. Sun faded real bad.. maybe just reupholstered would work.

Thats pretty much the important stuff.. Man thats a long list...
89 LX SOHC ZC

When you replace the brakes your fluid level will come back up as will your e brake.
