Playin with the dizzy...

Some guy was telling me about how he got his car to pull a bit better by messing around with the dizzy.

He told me that all he did was unscrew it a bit and turned it back and forth a bit until it caught a bit better. He said that the acceleration is better and shifting is easier.

Is this safe?
jkgonzalez3

lol he is talking about advancing and retarding the ignition timing yes its safe i guess but the correct way to do this is with a timing gun so you can actually see your timing instead of just guessing lol
Clipse

it's called advancing and retarding the timing.

Ooh ok. Yeah I'm still learning some of the stuff under the hood and learning how to do stuff so yeah. Which way would I have to turn it to catch better? Toward the front of the car or toward the back of the car?

If you don't know how to set it correctly, just leave it in the middle. You won't tell the difference it makes anyway.

If you really want to set it, buy a timing light and make sure it's set right first. Otherwise you'll hurt your top end or low down power.

Advancing the engine can sometimes make it run cleaner, but really. Where talking negligible changes here.

I agree the original owner of my ef had the timing set at 35 degrees Shocked   the guy at smog place was like how is this thing running... so I with a timing light got it down to 25 degrees but still not good enough for smog... (have to change the the timing belt) only real differences I see is how much gas she consumes...

yeah i just did my smog and im at -2 degree's any ideas what i should do? but im running a D15B Vtec but the dual point dizzy and manifold

damn CA smog laws it could be worse would could have japans smog laws!

I would say if you comfortable DIY'n buy or borrow a timing light and  IIRC In my case mine was adjusted forward to retard my timing in your case you should be adjusting the dizzy backwards to advance your timing for CA you timing needs to be at 18 degrees (for EF's) to pass, along as every thing else was testing good  my Ef passes with flying colors untill they check the timing  Laughing

i hear u on that mine runs clean and stuff just the timing too. im going to try to fix it this weekend and hope my luck goes my way. so at 18 degrees right? not -18? well i kinda knew something was kinda off because ill step on it and the first 2500 rpm's it runs kinda wack then after that it picks up nice but ill see what happends. but if i foward the timing how would it run?

ya it 18 degrees positive, your car will be running as your adjusting it and if your timing light has a digital read out it will tell you when there.

As to how it will run, should run like normal no real Horse power increase. I did notice a throttle response difference wasnt as slugish when pushing past the 100 mph mark Shocked   but ive only gone from 35 degrees to 25 degrees I still have to change out my timing belt on my D15 cuz its jumped a tooth... Oh yea you might see an MPG (miles per gallon) increase depending on how you drive your car...

hey you said u were running a d15b (the Jdm Vtec) if you dont mind me asking how come you didnt go with the multi point injection?
EF2dudesocal

well i dont know how to mess around with that stuff and i dont know what i need to convert it. i was just planing on converting it OBD1 after the smog. and yeah the JDM Vtec

Its the same as if you were going to do a "Mini Me" swap if your D15b came with the head You just need the MPFI Intake with the injectors and resistor box and Si ecu and you have to do some slight wiring at the ecu and engine bay... sounds more complicated than it really is... lol

Im going with D15 mini me swap (d15 block with D16z6 Vtec head) turbo. im going OBD1 as well just cuz im lazy lol
EF2dudesocal

awsome well the JDM D15 Vtec is a d15 block from an EG VX and with the D16 head its a hybrid engine thats how i have it and sounds good about the turbo i want to do it this engine too but thats until later. but it should be fun what are u running right now?
88Dark_CivLude

right now a d15 with the duel point injection... ugh its not too bad other than the fact it has no Tq well not enough... lol but i Love racing my boys 2002 honda element wit the AWD K24 he gets me on launch but soon as im out of 2nd i can walk away from him cuz his Vtec kicks in so damn late he might as well not have it lol
