My Lx SedanHey guys I'm new to this website and I just wanted to use it as a log for my 88 lx project.
I recently got the car not too long ago and I just love it.
I come home from school everyday and hit the garage to tear something new out of it or replace some worn out crap part in it. Whoever owned it previous to me really just drove it with no upkeep to anything.
Allready I've replaced every ball joint in the front end because they were all loose with tons of play and they just had to go.
I've done a bit of electrical work too because sometime in the cars life water got all up under the dash and ruined lots. I just don't really feel like going indepth at the moment.
Currently I'm doing an overhaul on a brake cylinder on the rear drums because it was bad when I got the car and it was leaking brake fluid all in my drum.
I'll post more later maybe with some pictures too.
Peace.

welcome to the site and good luck with the brakes. 88 sedan are the lightest of all the ef 4 door.

Looking forward to your progress

im looking forward to it too i have the same car as you
what color is yours?\
what are your plans for it?
LXKID88
Its a variety of colors at the moment because I have junkyard parts on it just trying to piece it together. But the body is a light blue, it defiantly needs re-painting but Ill get to that eventually.
I actually want to do alot with the car and I have the time too just not a steady flow of money.
I want a jdm ef9 front bumper with a DA integra lip. Thats basically my starting plans. I want to lower it a couple inches too, and eventually swap out the stock d15 with maybe a b18? I was thinking along those lines. Eventually.
I'll get some pictures up in a sec..
LXKID88
Heres some flicks.
I'll update the pictures occasionally whenever theres a change.
Peace.

88-89's are the best lol nice sedan
The trunk looks like CF
~Sp33~
I like that bluey colour.
LXKID88
The trunk is just a darker blue.

Well the brakes are turning out to be a bigger mess then I was expecting.
I figured I'd just get in there replace the shoes and put new seals on the brake cylinder and slap it all back together again but I've just realised that one of the handbrake cables is seized because the cars been sitting wherever it was for so long.
This is going to be a pain to replace.
It'll all be worth it in the end though..

mk. Brakes all done.
I just got a new radiator because the old one was unworthy and I'll be putting the new one it tommarow allong with a new accelerator cable because the old one sticks and its really annoying with the rpms constantly going up and down and sticking when you just in idle. Anyways heres a pic I took today.
Well see what happens.

cool project. hope to see more improments. i didint know the 88 is the lightest civic. i own a 88. why is it lighter?
Type-S EF
nice progress, but i would have gone disc if i had to buy a parking brake cable. those cost almost as much as the swap.
88 is the lightest because it doesnt have a clutch switch and other stuff. I dont know all the details, i just know i am on my 3rd 88 dx.
EF2dudesocal
clutch switch? but yeah i love my 88 its awsome!
~Sp33~
The switch that makes prevents you from starting the car in gear.
LXKID88
If I put disc in the back would that mean that I wouldn't have a handbrake?
And does the car comes stock without the clutch switch?
I didn't know that it didn't have one I thought the previous owner bypassed something in it because the other day when I started it the car was allready in gear and it suprised me. Not really a good thing but whatever.
~Sp33~
Probably bypassed.
If you go discs, you can still have a handbrake, you just need the appropriate cables.
LXKID88
also the handbrake cable cost me just like 30 bucks because my pops works for honda so we get discounts on parts. Its a huge help. really.
So I would really be costing me more to put in the discs in the rear and I'm careful where I put my money I don't really have to much at the moment. Thanks for the suggestions and posts.
Appreciated.

Thats crazy i thought my car had a alarm with remote start but now i know it didint well thats something new to know about my car. how much lighter?

Unless you're going endurance road racing, the only reason to put discs in the rear is for looks. Otherwise, they are more expensive than drums and weigh more as well. If only we could put on aluminum drums like those available on the 84-87 CRX HF; I'd do that in a heartbeat.
~Sp33~
They were also less efficient at braking. The CRX in the US which had upgraded rear discs had a larger braking distance then that of the model with drums.
Type-S EF

Really? I was just reading the may or june 1990 cant remember, of the CRX si and Civic SI the civic SI is lighter but has a longer stopping distance, and the us civic hatch never got 4 wheel disc......so wheres your info from? car and driver magazine doesnt use anyone elses stats, they test themselfs, from interior noise, stopping distance to curb weight.

Your testing civic SI vs CRX Si, I'm vsing CRX to CRX.

Rear drums definately feel better..
And I would think the SiR setup on the front and drums on the back would give a better brake for road use..
Rear disks do look cool though

Whatsup again.
Today I put in the new radiator, a new accelerator cable, and I painted the radiator brackets because they were all rusty and nasty looking.
I discovered a problem with the cold air intake too today. I took it out just to have a look see at everything and it seems that it broke off of a bracket that was welded to it. So now I just have a hole in the side of the piping on the intake. I was just thinking about buying a new one because there not all that expensive, or my other option would be to wrap the hole in metallic tape and let it sit. Letmeh know what would be the better option.
More to come.
LXKID88
I'm overhauling the front calapers today.
I have to redue the whole braking system because all the seals are bad in the car. This means a new master too, which is on the way.
LXKID88
I'm so happy I finnally got the ef outtah the garage and rolling again. I don't think the car has been on the road in years to tell you.
Now all I have to do is realign my wheels and it'll be street legal.
Oh another thing, my speedometer dosn't work but thats nothing to fret about.
I'm looking for different rims to put on the car preferabally all black and currently I have some sort of old chrome enkei rims on it and there 15's. Any suggestions on rims and what size looks appropraite for the car??

what do you mean fix it?
LXKID88

Well I mean.
I would like it to match the red of the tail lights so it flows better and just so it looks cleaner you know.
~Sp33~
I think he's just jealous because he only has a Ballade garnish.
LXKID88
Ohh oh I get you now hahah maybe.
I didn't really understand what you were talking about at first Icarus but now I guess I get it.
But I would like it to flow better though.

missing some parts there, but.....neat!
LXKID88
Hahah yes I am.
I have them they've just been removed because I'm going to take care of the rust problems in the trunk and on the body tomarow. Its pretty bad in the trunk because there was water just sitting in there for a while.
After this is done. Its going to be painted.

how did you get that exhaust?
LXKID88
The muffler is stock and the tip is just a weld on no-name I'm sure.
It was on the car when I got it heheh I don't really like it all that much but whatever.
JonnyED3
whoa thats gotta get you at least 25 hp lol jk
i was just wondering cuz the muffler looked a bit different to me
~Sp33~
I think the stock mufflers are much larger then that one.
LXKID88
It might not be stock then I'm not too sure about all of that. The piping for the tip just looks like someone welded it on there though so I'm not positive on all the previous owners work.

I didnt think my cars rust was all that bad, but then my finger was able to make a hole at the seam just behind the red line with the arrow. I also marked other common rust spots for you and others to closely inspect. Once treated, and painted go in and spray some 3M™ Rust Fighter I Coating. Michigan puts down salt at the drop of a hat, so we have some really badly rusted cars here. Every body shop swears by the stuff for their collision repair. Available by the quart to use in their special wand/sprayer or in aerosol with special mini wand.
ksconekiller
Is that similar to rubberized undercoating? Not the same, of course, but is it the same idea?
~Sp33~
I used fish oil, also remember to spray in the bottom of the doors, where water regularly sits from sliding off of the window.
LXKID88
Okay thank you for the tips.
Today I was fighting some of that rust. I have to rebuild the trunk lip that goes around it because the old one rusted away underneath the seal. Its pretty bad.
Its funny because I actually have rust in most of those spots that you pointed out Type-S EF, thanks for the pointers.
Type-S EF

Its more like a wax than an oil, the tip of eather wand is like a diffuser making it come out 90 degrees of the tube, but in all directions. i would take up a sill plate and get inside the rockers, and along the wheel arches in the trunk under the rear dash.
The first real hot day you might notice it drip. That's when it wicks and leeches into all the nooks and crannies. Till then its effectiveness is a bit limited.
LXKID88
I'll have more pictures in a bit I've been busy so I havn't gotten too much done with the car.
btw I need pointers on what color to paint the car.
I can't decide. I like the maroon stock color but idk yett.
