Kevin's dohc zc swapped dx (editted title)

Well, I guess I'll start one of these too!!!!  Very Happy  So I have been wanting one of these for a while and the family all thought I was a little kookoo..... Go figure. I like the little sedan, much more than I did the hatch or wagon. So I found one local that ran, no title though so the first order of buisness was to get a bonded title. It was a little bit of a PITA but really not that bad. Got that done then went to work on making it drivable and not so stinky. Took the entire interior out and washed it then put it all back together after it dried. The PO cut the springs and had two donuts and two crap ass tires on it. Went to a local wrecking yard and got four struts with springs and fixed that problem then bought some 13" BBS from a guy on CL, got some spanking brand new tires and took that little turd out for a ride!!!! It was nice, me and my oldest son driving the car we had been tinkering with for the last few weeks. And today back at that wrecking yard was looking for some plastic wheel well liners and found a cluster with tach..... In perfect shape.... And already removed!!!!! Just laying in the floor board under a door panel!!!! What luck. So I just got home and installed that, works perfect! YAY! I'll post some pictures later today and I'll give my game plan for the build, need to jump in the shower and have some fun with the kids!
Proper282

Good start bro. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to really enjoy helping me in the garage. She was my partner in crime during the build up of my zc lubing all the main journals and rods. But i think she enjoyed wearing the nitrile gloves and smearing the assembly lube all over the place more than she cared about the actual motor lol!(she's only 4)

Looking forward to hearing your plan of attack and seeing some pics of it back to stock height..... Still think you should have left it in the weeds lol! The sedans look so good on the floor.
mrnurse

Ok! Thanks man my daughter is 5 and she likes to help out with car stuff. It is a true joy spending time with the kids and working on cars. Now for the plan.... It is going to stay at stock ride hight but for now with my son learning to drive in it, I didn't want him ripping the bottom out of it. So for now stock hight it is. The car is light blue with a blue interior and it has some body damage. So a repaint is in the plans but it will be going back to the oe color. Suspension I am still in the air about. Gonna stay one brand for all the suspension either ksport or skunk2.... Any opinions are welcome.... If I use ksport I will go with their 11" or 12" kit front and rear, if I use skunk2 I will use wilwood. Rims will be a web style either 15" or 16". The car will stay auto but I'm in the air still about which one, either the dohc zc or the b16a. No body kits or crazy wings.... I like em clean and low.... Either engine will be built but no turbo or spray. The zc may get a jrsc if I can find one. I really want a clean stock look inside the car and in the engine compartment. So no bling unless you think oe is bling.... Any suggestions or ideas will be greatfully accepted!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Sounds like you have a good plan mapped out good luck.
mrnurse

stole the keys from my son and drove the civic to work today....... Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
mrnurse

so I was wondering if anyone has ever installed a sub under their seats? I need to look/measure but it seems like there is a lot of space there...... looking at these subs and mids for the doors and rear deck......any one ever hear anything about this brand?

tried to post a picture but cant from this computer...

CDT audio, the QES-680 (sub) and CL 62 (mids/highs)
mrnurse

EF Sedan Enthusiast

CDT is an excellent brand.  I doubt you'll be able to mount a sub under the seat unless you use the slim line Pioneers.
mrnurse

I'll measure it in the morning, if I can't then I'll make a box in the rear deck.
89ef2

Id have to agree... I have put an amp under the seat before but even a slim sub would be tight
mrnurse

Well yesterday was a total flop at getting anything done.... Although I did get some more research done and I think I'm going to totally bypass the sub to start. The cdt audio is for sure the speakers I'm going to use. Still the cl-62 in the back but the front will get the cl 642 three way componets. If it is not enough I'll be able to expand and put a sub in later......
mrnurse

Son took the civic and passed his driving test!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Awesome!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Cool now your going to be fighting over the keys.
mrnurse

It's all good. he can take it out any time he likes now, in fact he took it to work today. I have a great deal of trust in him that he will be careful and enjoy this new found freedom with safety as a high priority. He really is a good kid, and I trust him. besides he still says he wants the BMW..... And I will be collecting parts for it so I can have fun with it when I get it back. I ordered a radio for it from ebay, 1999-2000 accord, looks just like one I saw on here where someone else did this to their car. is there a wiring diagram for making the harness plug so I can re-pin it so it is like stock? and can the pins be bought seperate? I am going to be installing a killer sound system and will need to do some custom work......
89ef2

Id be willing to bet it is plug and play......
mrnurse

You think? I have not pulled the tape deck back out to look at it, got the cd player in the mail today and went to Honda and ordered a few parts. The parts lady there is pretty damn cool and is more than willing to look some stuff up for me.
89ef2

Honda just like any other company always tries to cut down on cost so the plug would be the same.... Id bet 1000 its the same
EF Sedan Enthusiast

I don't think the plug is the same.  I used to have a 99 Accord.  Hope I'm wrong though.
mrnurse

I have not had the car home and me home at the same time in order to check it........I will go wrecking yard hunting some time this week.
mrnurse

went to the junk yard and scored some body molding, $30! gonna post some pictures of the bad on the car too.... Crying or Very sad and the subs I am buying!

mrnurse

I had not posted in a little bit, so here we are. I have been letting my son drive the car and so far the only issue was a little cooling problem. not sure what happened but all is fine now. I have been collecting the stereo stuff and almost have all the componets ill need for the stereo. he has started looking for another car too. he likes it but wants something else. no biggie to me.......ill get my car back from him. I need to get the suspension figured out, it is leaning pretty bad to the drivers side, still have not taken it to the shop to get it aligned......that should be my next goal. I have been laying tile in the house so that is where most of my attention has been.  it will get there, I just need to complete a few other projects before i get the state of being overwhelmed.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Looks like you're on your way to having a full time project. Very Happy
mrnurse

yeah, I am still very intersted in putting a b16a with an auto trans.  there will be tinkering for about the next year. after I am done with school and can put more hours in ( at a higher salary!!!!) more progress will be made.
mrnurse

well. the car is mine again. bought my son a 92 325is coupe last night.......he loves it. the civic, well. I just replaced both axles about to do inner and outer tie rod ends and see about that alignment...... there is a local guy that has a white sedan with a 5speed...... we are talking about a trade. will know something today. but the car is running pretty good. the damn thing bottoms out like the springs or struts are weak????? and it still has a massive rake to the front that make you feel almost like your about to fall out of your seaet as your driving......
89 LX SOHC ZC

Well it dident take him long to bail on the Honda but I guess thats good for you.  Good luck on the trade.
mrnurse

I think he was never really into the honda because his eye were already set on a BMW. oh well, I will just have to show him how cool that little car can be!!!! still waiting to hear back from the guy with the white sedan......
mrnurse

well. it has been a few days. guy never called back. oh well. ordered inner and outer tie rod ends. I have been driving it to work and enjoy not seeing the fuel needle move much!!! also we bought a 2012 nissan frontier crew cab.....pretty nice truck. we like it alot better than the 2007 accord.
mrnurse

Well isn't this fan-fucking-tabulouse...... So my stepson ran over something in his bmw and was not able to drive it. Ended up he knocked his exhaust loose was an easy fix but was not able to jump on it and fix it right then due to i was working and then hosting a Halloween party. Next morning he asked if he could take the civic to work. I said ok. Well he went to his girlfriends house then to work then to another friends house. Somewhere along the way...." it started running hot and the.needle was in the red part but i was only driving from alvin (next town over) to friendswood. Then it started running really bad." i told him you know there is a coolant leak and you should have pulled over and filled the radiator or at least called. I didn't want to get dirty, he says. "is the car ok and when are you going to fix my car?" he asks!!!! I am boiling as i go out to the car to see what's wrong with it. No coolant. I top it off start the car running like shit. Coolant is shooting out the tailpipe. I tell him he just fucked up my engine and he says"sorry. Can we fix my car now?"........holy fuck two cars in two days!!!!! Yeah he will never drive one of my cars again. I am so pissed right now. No accountability. No respect. No remorse for fucking up someone else's property.

Ok rant over........

Now im looking for a mpfi swap harness. Dohc  zc. And a pcm.

Any suggestions?!?!?
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Wow man, that's horrible.  I would tell him no, have the BMW towed and fixed on your own dime.  Gotta teach him a lesson eventually.
89ef2

when i wrecked my first car all my pops told me was "what u goinna do"... thankful for that because i have alot of know-how now... best thing that could of happened to me
89 LX SOHC ZC

Wow thats all bad. Sad
mrnurse

I want a dohc zc. I am not looking to make crazy power or even take it on a track. I like the look of the engine and because it is  bolt in will be easier and cheaper(by what I have read). but I do want to keep the auto trans. I am just having a hard time finding one. and not sure what all I need to complete this conversion. I am just a little sceptical about buying one sight unseen. anyone know where a good place to look is?
Towlie

I hear people always buy from hmotorsonline.com and they can ship to your house. They have a DOHC ZA for like 775 but for around that price people always say to go B series.
mrnurse

right. but I want to keep it auto. and a b16a1/auto would require quite a bit of fab work.
mrnurse

plus if when I find me a jrsc for it I will have the setup that should be fun and reliable.....
Towlie

Why do you want it auto ?  Sad  Manual is so fun!
mrnurse

cause it is not a race car.....silly.... there is a look that I am after and it is more like a factory "sport edition" where it is quicker and handles better than stock but not a "wanna be" race car.
Towlie

But manual is so fun :3!
90efLS

Not only is manual fun but its more reliable than auto if you treat it right. Plus you will see A LOT more out of your motor if you go 5 speed. Auto is best for a single cam d15 that you dont want to show off at all. 5 spd= more fun and better functionality and less problems in the long run.
mrnurse

If you maintain it, if you don't dog it, and if you don't let your kids drive it, either will last.
mrnurse

something like this.....
EF Sedan Enthusiast

That's a throw back of Wayne's sedan.
mrnurse

I didn't know who's it was. it is a screensaver of mine at my job!!!! I like it alot and it is totally the look I am after. although the color blue will be the same electric blue that is on my 2012 frontier.....
mrnurse

Little update. Stereo stuff....

Honda cd player..got it
audio control eql ..got it
audio control 2xs.. On its way
American bass xd65.. Got them
polk amps.. Pa250.2 & pa400.1(these are what im looking at now)
Polk speakers.. Mm6.5 components(these are what im looking at)

Stereo stuff is kinda on hold till i get it running again.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice to here you've got all your stereo stuff together so it looks like you better hurry up and decide on a power plant LOL.
mrnurse

Well. After an 8 hour road trip my new engine is sitting on a pallet in my garage!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!! Ob0 dohc zc!!!!! Started pulling the old engine out and hit the point that i had to stop. No engine hoist and i am waiting on a harness and pcm. Pg7 is the one i was recommended. This is gonna deplete my car funds but the extra hp will be worth it. Important also gonna try and get the ac working again too. I have been taking a few pictures. Ill post them when i get them uploaded.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice.  Are you sticking with the auto trans and will the pm7 work with the auto tranny?  I thought the pm7 was a manual ECU.
mrnurse

I was told to use a pg7 from an 88-90 integra. But Im seeing there are multiple versions. I think the a12 is for an auto (pg7-a12) but any known info will help.
mrnurse

Ordered my harness last night. Gonna order my ecu today. Still doing a little research first.
mrnurse

Decided to use the ps9. It is out of a civic so my auto trans should work right. Ordered it today. Plan is that next weekend a buddy or two will come over with an engine stand. And we will swap the engine out and put the car back together.....maybe even started....
mrnurse

ok, so I have the harness and it is on the new engnie. the ecu is a ps9...i think, I am at work and cant remember... the old enging is all but yanked from the enging compartment. I am off this weekend and will removed the old and drop in the new saturday and hopefully with fire that dirty ho up sat night or sunday morning!!!!! then it is on to the type r suspension and brakes!!!!! i bought some integra (2000-2001) seats and am looking at a console. I also plan on fixing the a/c as I am installing the new engine. so.....we will see!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good stuff dude.  I'll make plans to be in your area in two weeks.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Vary nice.
mrnurse

The old is out the new is in. The clean up and paint is half ass. I really want to get it running and when it comes time for paint i will pay them to make it look nice..... I am ef'n tired and need to take a break. Ill jump back on it tomorrow....
jon_akers

Hey, not sure if you want, but I can grab a pg7 from my local yard. Its in a teg with a d16a1. I cant remember if its auto or not. Just text and let me know.
mrnurse

You know how much? If it is an auto then i would be interested fir sure. Jon said he would be gone till the 28th or so.
jon_akers

Well, its a manual tranny. Has the cg one in it.
mrnurse

ok. to do list:
1. upper rad hose and finish bolting everything down
2. repin to ecu plugs.
3. top off the fluids
4. battery
5. turn the key to the on position and make sure there are no leaks
6. cross my fingers
7. turn the key to the start position!!!!!!!
mrnurse

I   T      I   S      A   L   I   V   E ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !
mrnurse

THE TWO VAC LINES OUT THE BACK OF THE INTAKE........WHERE DO THEY GO?!?!? I CAN HEAR IT LEAKING AND IF I PUT MY FINGER OVER THE SMALLER ONE. IT HAD NUMBER "12" ON IT THE CAR DIES. I TRIED HOOKING IT UP TO THE "12" FROM MY CAR AND IT JUST DIES..... WHEN I ACCEL LIGHT IT BOGS AND DOES NOT WANT TO MOVE. WHEN I MASH THE GAS THE CAR COMES ALIVE AND FLIES!!!! HELP!!!!
mrnurse

ok, I have a bunch of pictures on my camera and on my phone that i will down loan and put on here tomorrow. still need to fix the vac leak. but otherwise I am totally pleased with my first engine swap!!!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Cant wait ti see the pics glad things went well.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Wish I was in town to help out but looking forward to the pix.
mrnurse

ok, lets see about some pictures!!!!

this is the before:

then there was the partial tear down....yuk:

the new engine:

my garage!!!!!:

mrnurse

the new engine in!!!:

my question about the vacuum ports is in this picture,:

mrnurse

also for my stereo system I aquired some old school rockford fosgate amps. three punch 30hd two punch 45hd and one punch 75hd........they should be here begining of next week. as for the car once i figure out the vacuum issue i will fix an exhaust issue......

I ran mine on a pm6 for ages before getting a pm7 ECU. I heard PM6 was the best if you couldn't get a pm7. Followed by the d16a1 integra ECU PG7.

Those vacuum lines should connect to the dashpot solenoid unit on the firewall behind the intake manifold. Unfortunately the service manual doesn't give a very accurate depiction on where it's supposed to connect, but check this picture out and you will hopefully be able to work it out:

mrnurse

Hmmm. There is a port on top of my tb that i don't see on this picture. And i had found a diagram that showed something different. Also engine codes are(ecu) 7 & 14......
~Sp33~

I think yours and that picture only have ports for the map sensor and charcoal canister on the throttle body?

What did the diagram show? Can you post it?

Your codes are for the TPS and EACV. It's common because the plugs are the same to have them connected incorrectly. Try swapping the plugs from the back of the EACV (at the back of the intake manifold) with the Throttle position sensor (on the back of the throttle body).

Remember to reset the ECU, and then start it up.

Hopefully that'll clear it.
89ef2

Im jealous... That is the swap I want...  Lookin good
mrnurse

Would plugging them into the wrong one cause the surging?
mrnurse

Oh boy!!!! Brospeed bosal ss exhaust.... With downpipe and cat!!!!!! (i didn't have a cat)
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Sweet Very Happy
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice!
mrnurse

Well, code 7 is gone 14 is still there though. Gonna put the new exhaust in saturday if i'm not working. Just ready to drive the damn thing.
mrnurse

Got tired of messing with the eacv so i took the new exhaust i got and cleaned it up. Bead blasted the downpipe and the little pipe between it and the cat. Printed them both with some high temp black paint. Removed the rusted out heat shields from the cat bead blasted it. No paint there though..... Cleaned the cat back and after removing the old hack job of exhaust that was on there installed the new exhaust. Tucks up in the body nice. Sounds soooooooo much better too. Tried to contact a local shop that does swaps to see if they can figure out my wiring or sensor issue. I need the car drivable asap.  Mad
Edison Carasio

Good luck with this, very interested in it.  I have a Automatic CRX that I daily to work and it's engine has 313,000 miles on it and is in need of some work, and I was thinking of doing DOHC ZC in it with a PS9 (I have two).  Either that or when the SOHC D16A6 in my GF's car goes doing the Auto DOHC ZC in her car (it's an auto as well).

I was gonna swap the CRX to manual but no point now that I have my sedan which is manual.
mrnurse

Was going to work on it today but.... The son and his bmw..... Changing out most of the vacuum lines under the intake.... Sonera fuel lines valve cover gasket and intake gasket. Plugs and oil change.......i talked to a shop and after i finish sons car if i can't fix the civic it is going to a local shop so they can see what's going on with it.......
mrnurse

Took the civic to a shop yesterday. Waiting on a call today. If the running issue is not too much will get the inner and outter tie rods and alugnment taken care of too.....
mrnurse

Think I may have just waisted some time and money. the shop said they had done some of these motor swaps in the past. anyways.... so the Ps9 is a 90-91 civic ex auto ecu. the only code is a 14 which is a eacv code.  the guy has had my car for two days and is telling me I need a new computer "like one from an integra" I said if it was a manual trans then sure but the atuo trans controller for the teg is a seperate computer. the only code is for the eacv. "well let us look a little deeper"..... I am at work now or I would just go pick the damn thing up and mess with it when I have the time. this is why I HATE taking my cars to shops..........

I've ran my car flawlessly on a pm6 for years in the past. Not that you really need to hear that i guess, but it does make an ideal substitute for the correct PM7.

That being said, i doubt the ps9 is causing the issue. Perhaps try searching Honda-tech to see if anyone else has had the same issue with that ECU/engine combination.

Goodluck mate.
mrnurse

I got ahold of them right as they were closing yesterday. they tried the wire that I told them to start with......now it will be monday before they can get get to it again.......

I don't think that shop will honestly figure it out.  DOHC ZC into an AUTO fourth gen Civic is not a very desireable swap so I doubt 99% of the auto Civic owners of the world would care enough to do the swap (with me and you being the exception).

PS9 is the a usable ECU.  It's MPFI, OBD0, and for an automatic and the DOHC ZC and D16A6 are both D-series engines.  Only difference being the ZC has an extra cam.
mrnurse

I picked the civic up about two hours ago. Have been driving it all over just enjoying driving my lil civic. Dont really care that it is ugly right now. Its running and running good. Need to figure something out with the trans detent cable though, it is pulled a little and the car is shifting a little funny. Mech said that the ecu is just seeing it like there is throttle given and that the trans will down shift sooner than it normally would. I will fab something up later. Now i just need to clean it and start saving for a  new suspension and paint job!!!!!!!!!!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good stuff buddy Very Happy
Edison Carasio

Glad to hear they got it going.  It's good to be wrong sometimes Smile
mrnurse

shoulda known it wouldnt last forever.......how hard is it to change out the heater core?
~Sp33~

Hey mate,

It's probably no use to you now, but i found this and thought this thread could use it:

Quote:
(From first pic)* These ports are only from engines from automatic cars. I have been told that you can hook the right one up to your Purge Control Solenoid for your vaccume source, which I'm going to test. If it dosnt work out, I'll let you guys know. For engines from maunal cars without the ports, It is nessicary to tap into the line going from the dashpot (vertical silver thing next to the throttle body) to the intake manifold. Either way, your going to have to cap the left one off with a vaccume cap, you can get them at any automotive store.

Stolen from http://www.thezcr.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11460
mrnurse

Hey thanks! The car is been a lot of fun. The new heater core is enroute so i will be changing that soon. As long as i do not turn the heater on i dont leak any coolant...... Was gonna take the civic over to see about a paint job but it was the wifes birthday dinner so we hung out. Also, the factory radio got smoked, so i bought a kenwood, and it sounds sooooooo much better. Just need new speakers, will go look at a set tuesday after i run a few errands.
mrnurse

ordered some new speakers for the front and rear, will install them when they get here. kicker ds line componets for the front and coax for the rear.... have water coming in from the windshield  to the drivers side floor board and getting into the trunk. I have worked 6 12's this week so no time to investigate. or take the car to that shop. been looking at the suspension and brake situation. the cheapest route would be to do a rear disk and put some fat fives on there. then there would be the 96 spec itr that are the 4x114 with 96 itr rims, then  newer 5 lugs with either thr ctr or the itr rims...... just not totally sure yet..... the car will just be a daily driver, and once i get all the bugs out of the mechanincal part Ill look into a tuning program and chip burner.
Edison Carasio

Any new pics of it?
mrnurse

None right now. I will clean it up and snap some on my next day off.
mrnurse

some from right after the swap. still need the tube from the intake to the air box, if anyone has one.........pm me please!!!

also thinking about switching to a manual steering rack....... worth it in a dd? no parallel parking here......just looking at ways to kinda clean up the engine bay....
mrnurse

oh and that was my first attempt to "write" on a picture......
89 LX SOHC ZC

I've kinda been thinking about going to a manual rack myself but im not shure about the steering effort involved.
mrnurse

It is still my goal to find a jrsc for it an I believe not having those hoses there would really make it easier to install it.
Edison Carasio

Both my sedan and CRX are manual racks.  My GF's hatch had power steering and I thought it was toooo sloppy.  When we did her swap we just undid the belt since the D16A6 we had didn't have the provision for it on the crank pulley.
mrnurse

ok, so there is no difference other than the fluid lines....the steering shaft and tie rod ends are all the same as well as the mounting locations?
mrnurse

also, I removed the door panels made some holes and installed some tweeters then made some new plates to mount the new door speakers. overall it all went well. the speaker grills fit like they should and it sounds a little better. will only improve when they get more power and sound deadner.
