Joey F.'s '89 Civic Sedan build

Sup every one! Just wanted to start a build thread to log the progress with my new daily: Almond Cream 1989 Civic DX Sedan .

I currently daily drive a pretty clean 1991 Civic Si. I wanted to get this car off the road asap due to a few close calls with dumbass SUV drivers... The car is just too minty to be doing battle on my daily commute.

My current daily:

...And the Sedan that will be replacing the Si for daily duties. She's not much to look at right now...

I figured the sedan was going to need a bit of OOMPH to get in and out of traffic... so I decided to swap in a B18. Just the normal run of the mill stuff: Hasport mounts, 7lbs flywheel, JDM Y1 LSD tranny, DPFI to MPFI swap, blah blah blah.

So this is where i'm at right now... the motor in the bay, Full A/C all hooked up, etc.. just waiting on my next day off to finish a few more things to get her on the road.

Ill keep you guys posted as time goes on...

hooooo ya, muggy FL weather will zap your energy in 5 minutes. If the car wasnt going to be a daily driver, I wouldnt care... but for work and going long distance trips, A/C is a must have.
ME-B-N-ME

I dunno why you guys in FL crying about needing AC.
I lived there, drove my AC-less sedan EVERYDAY no problem Smile
lol

Clean ass almond sedan.. wish I could find something half as clean here in VA

Whats up 89civicracer ? I hear you on riding out in the rain with no A/C. It sucks like no other...especially riding in the car with your wife and the in laws.. not a good impression at all. lol

I'm in NE Florida, how about you? There is a CRX meet in Orlando on Nov. 7th (it's more of a EF Honda meet more or less) maybe ill see you there?

Thanks Sancho! I'm hoping this beater turns out pretty good so I can put the hatch to rest for a bit... It needs some going over !
Joey f.

Recently I installed the exhaust system. It's a weird hybrid setup that I had put together from left over parts I had laying around...

It consists of:

New 3 door HKS piping
Edelbrock Muffler welded to HKS Muffler flange
Edelbrock Dual tips

This system was orginally fitted on my EF Hatch, so it doesnt fit perfect.

As you can see the tips need to be extended to the bumper. I may just do away with the current tips and get a muffler shop to fab up some OEM tips on there.

Also, if you notice the piping hangs a bit low for some reason... the hangers on the Sedans are a bit different from the 3 door hatch (at least the SI) so im going to have that fixed as well.

What do you guys think about the current tip? I guess the tips arent too bad...

mitsubishiv5

i think the tips look good, aside from the being a little pushed back but dual tips always look nice. must be nice to own a b series Smile

Ya the current tips arent too bad but first thing once I get the car registered is go the muffler shop and get them realigned to the bumper.

I guess, if the muffler shop doesnt want to reweld some OEM tips I have, Ill stick with these.. and just paint the rear of the tips on back Hi Temp flat black.

Wow, not having consistent internet blows.

So glad you're posting your build here Very Happy

Keep us posted and I'm looking forward to the progress.

I got the car on the ground finally... Just got thru installing the axles and tranny fluid... I installed a set of spare Rotas just to get her rolling to Discount Tire and get some other wheels mounted..

... as for the other wheels, what do you guys think I should go with?

Silver Center 15" Mugen MR-5's

White 14" CF48's

I'm kinda leaning towards my CF48's since theyd be cheaper to run since theyre 14"s ... But those MR-5s are so tastey.

PS: ya ya... I know ... I gotta lower the car ASAP. lol
Joey f.

I finally got to test drive the car around the block. Drives really smooth and accelerates nice but when I went to brake... NOTHING...pedal to the floor hahahaha.. I limped the car back to the house and put her back up on the stands and pulled the drums off. Right when I pulled the drum the Shoe linings fell right to the ground... ! Its like the previous owner towed the car with the Ebrake up or something and baked the shoes and the rear wheel cylinders.

So now I gotta rebuild the rear brakes....*sigh*

liljoey

all the more reason to go with a rear disc conversion.nice car and wheel choice.

Holly - That hatch is clean.

Sedan looks good, i'd love to see the mr5's on it.

Thanks Sp33! The hatch is just too nice to be daily'ing any more.. I just want to hide it away in a storage and bring her back out in 2030 lol.

Ive been leaning towards the Silver MR5's too... the CF4's are cool but I always liked them on the older 3rd Gen Civics and 1st Gen CRXs

Thanks man! I would love to swap out with a rear disc setup on the 4 door but funds are kinda split between this and my CR-X project. Since this is mainly a daily project, I have stuck to just repairing the rear drums with an old (clean) set I had in storage.

These were left over from a past rear disc swap I did on my old EG. I cracked them open and was happy to find out the parts were worthy to reuse. Saving $$$ is always cool.

So the car is is up on stands once again.. =(

mitsubishiv5

MY bad nice jdm wheels! good work!!!
Joey f.

This is probably the saddest update ive ever given. Welp, I got the 4 door running awesome last Thursday, drove it to the closest gas station to fill her up...then on my way back it starts to STUTTER REAL BAD. I limp it back to the house when it finally dies in the drive way...

So I start trouble shooting... I end at 3am Friday morning, still not knowing WTF is wrong...I go to sleep for like 5 hours, get back up and go straight for the valve cover, I pull that off... and I find a ROCKER ARM just laying there...

I pull the Rocker arm out and see the valve spring still compressed (Right spring)...these means only 1 thing... the valve is BENT.

All in all 3 valves are bent and the Rocker Arms can be pulled out freely... =(

Basically, the timing belt slipped and is my fault for not changing it when the motor was out. The timing got outta wack and the Valves hit the pistons and blah blah blah u know the rest... so now I gotta swap in a different motor. I could spend the dough and just get the head redone, but im sure the pistons are smacked pretty good.

So now....my plan is to take the LS outta my CRX and put it in the 4 door.

Ill let you guys know what happends.
Sancho

Damn I'm sorry to hear about that Sad
mitsubishiv5

bad news, same thing happened to a friends 86 prelude...sorry to hear
~Sp33~

Aw man that sucks.

Good luck with getting her running again.
Joey f.

Thanks for the support fellas. Ive had so much luck with all my other cars through out the years, I guess it was just a matter of time for something like this to happen.

But dont worry, i'm already working on taking the LS outta my CRX and putting it in the four door. It sucks, but yo, its gotta be done.

I'll keep you guys updated.

Heres the LS in the CRX im taking out. Ill be sure to replace the TBELT this time... hahaha
