Jman's 91 LX "Amy"

So I recently picked up a nice little ef sedan. Has receipts and a fresh motor. Needs some things though. I've got a rolling list of ideas from start to finish.

Step one: stage zero
-new exhaust
-fuel filter
-o2 sensor
-oil change (synthetic for efficiency+ k&n filter)
-ngk iridium IX plugs for a more complete combustion
-cap &rotor
-ngk plug wires
-new cv joints
-new windscreen
- new rims and rubbers.

Stage one.
-rear disk and front BB upgrade
-sound system hooked up
-fix worn or busted trim pieces from all over.
-header
-c pillar bar and front strut bar.
-rear lid spoiler
-rear window fun
-window visors
Stage 2
-mini me swap.
-lumpy cam
-tune
-true hid lighting
-lightweight lcas
-integra sway bar upgrade.
Stage 3
-boost cause you know I want it.

And expect to progress to start slow at first as my savings got used on the car. I like going slow and steady. Love the site. Thank god for buying the ef sedan. Coolest batch of honda lovers anywhere. Last night I saw a post on h-t about a man loved ef's and it was locked by an angry admin. I don't know why. But i'm glad to be aboard here. Any questions, comments or ideas are welcome.

That's the idea Smile i'd like to transform it slowly. I'm not rolling in cash and as a college student I won't be. This is my check list and i'll work on her as i'm able. But hondas are amazing and i'm in love with mine already but she needs love. Btw the original blue meanie is my moms harley davidson soft tail deuce.

I personal love this site compared to others... help is always here when neeeded
HondaJunkie

Nice sounds like a good build cant wait to see the progress considering yours is the only one I know with black interior and blue exterior like mine I wish we lived closer to eachother for photo shoots.
jmanwantsboost

I won't let you guys down. My projects come along slow but steady. Made some cash today so exhaust friday and new fuel filter and o2 sensor soon. Took some driving videos but the noise is bad. I'll try again.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Looking forward to seeing what you make of this sedan.  Remember, slow and steady wins the race  Twisted Evil

With 92 hp slow and steady's the name of the game. Plus this car serves as my one and only ride to commute 60 miles a day. so reliability comes before fun.
jmanwantsboost

So today I discovered i'm not getting poor fuel economy, my gas gauge is wonky. I'm getting 34 mpgs. And that's with third gear cruises thru the canyon and city driving. I think 38 or 40 is achievable. So instead of new fuel filter and o2 sensor in going to fix the clunky driver cv joint. That should free up some efficiency. Come spring i'll address the tune up. I've never gotten mpgs like that before so i'm stoked. And i'm positive that's no si tranny in my car. Also I think my clutch needs adjusting. Any diy on that? I'll search it up just want an opinion on difficulty. Always had hydro clutch.
FlatTireRacer

Adjustment is easy. Just reach down and turn the nut until you get the correct amount of tension. I love mechanical clutches!

Hmmm cause the engagement is kinda weird. Sometimesit takes up half way up and othertimes it starts right away. Idk.. Stupid six pick clutch.
FlatTireRacer

Sounds like you need a new clutch cable. Whens the last time you checked the throwout bearing?

That's what I thought. Kinda sticky mabey. My beating is quiet but I just bought the car a week ago. I don't have the time or tools to year into her. The clutch and componentshave less than 30k I was told. The phenomenononly happens starting from first every now and again. I'll just give to get a new cable and adjust it I spose. Getting a stock exhaust for 50 bucks tomorrow. Better than 100 for a straight pipe. I'm not down with sounding ricer.
jmanwantsboost

Got a straight pipe welded up today so now my cabin is quieter and the exhaust sits in its channel and doesn't scrape
jmanwantsboost

jmanwantsboost wrote:

So I should explain that the exhaust I looked at had a hole from being slammed and I didn't want it to get worse so I spent the extra caps for some pipe and the fact I didn't have access to a lift. Still hella loud outside. And do pardon any spelling errors. I only have net on my phone and this site gets glitchy lol.
4dred6

jmanwantsboost wrote:

nice.
jmanwantsboost

Yea it was on my under carriage and made my ground clearance mabey an inch. The new pipe looks good i'll snap some pics tomorrow. Mabey my gf will pose for me haha Wink
jmanwantsboost

So over the last couple days my throwout bearing has started to really make some noise and its becoming difficult to get my car into fifth with out letting it go into neutral, pumping the clutch then setting it in. Those cheap bastard used the old throwout bearing when they swapped the clutch before I got the car. I'm pissed cause I have nowhere to work on a car and its my daily... Fuuuuuuuuuu
HondaJunkie

Dang that sucks my EG hatch had a terrible throwout but I rode that bitch forever. If you can make it to a rural area find a park somewhere around there and do it in the back parking lot lol people do it here sometimes.

well it seems the axels and clutch cable from your rex will fit my sedan. What year and model is it? Trying to figure out if the spline counts are the same. If I save enough I could do the bearing and axels at once. Never tore into a honda before lol.
HondaJunkie

Alright cool they are from an 89 Si. Yea I would do them at the same time to and if you need to save up it might not be a bad idea to try and find a d16a6 tranny to throw on your d15b2 while you wait.
jmanwantsboost

What's the difference with that tranny? Mine is supposed to be an si. It revs about 2750 at 60mph.
HondaJunkie

This is information I pulled from Crxcommunity.com from user - Mista Bone (Posting this for credit purposes)

There are two different D16A6 USDM Transmissions,

1. 90-91 EX, 35mm small bearing, 4.058 Final Drive *Casting Stamp PL3-3000/6000/9000* Casting Stamp is located on tranny not the motor.

2. 88-91 Si, 40mm small bearing, 4.250 Final Drive *Casting Stamp PL3-A000 or PL3-A100.    If you need a better reference here is a link to take a look at.

jmanwantsboost

Interesting. I will only have money to replace what is absolutely necessary. So only axels and clutch bearings. This car went from blessing to pain in the ass. Shits got me so stressed. I can't afford to have it break on me
HondaJunkie

That sucks man I hope you figure stuff out. But I can speak with experience from having both bad cv's and throwout bearing you can ride on them for a long time. I never fixed both on my eg and it still was a great daily. The throwout is just more annoying cause of the sound but I would recommend fixing that cv first of all things considering thats safety if it breaks on you just my 2 cents though goodluck.

Well that's good to know. I'll make sure to make the cv a priority. I drove almost 2.5k on a bad ujoint in my old mazda but by the time I replaced it, it was disintegrating and about a mile from shredding. Badnewsbears.
jmanwantsboost

So my rear deck lid or whatever behind my rear seats has no holes for speakers. Is that some sort of jdm thing? I have rear speaker wiring and it works. So idk wtf is up lol.
4dred6

My 88 came like that
jmanwantsboost

Wow. Honda engineers are known for counting ounces to cut weight (see nsx type r meshie shift boot), but that's silly. Got a working speaker harness but don't want to cut it up. Need some pods!
FlatTireRacer

For reals! They sell some more up to date pods at Car Toys and places like that.
jmanwantsboost

Yea after I do some upkeep i'm gonna get some rears!
HondaJunkie

Hey man I pulled the engine and tranny from my crx today so the axels are all ready to be shipped if you still want them let me know dude.
jmanwantsboost

As long as they are good to go i'm interested! Might be next week when i'll have the cash in hand. But yes i'm down. They will be an absolute blessing.
HondaJunkie

Yea they seem to be in excellent condition the guy I bought the crx from said he replaced them within the year so they arent old. Ill get you a shipping quote tommarow or this weekened. Ill be using usps im sure that would be the cheapest.
jmanwantsboost

Awesome. I got a po box so it would be post office to post office! So what swap are you doing in the rex? Now that my sedan is so fun I really want a hatch or crx.
HondaJunkie

Alright sweet ill grab a quote tommarow. As for the rex im actually scraping it I sold everything off it and doubled my money and now I have a free d16a6 head and tranny to throw in the sedan =). But ive had 3 crxs and they are a great car and really fun but ive yet to own an EF hatch and I really want one considering it's probably my favorite ef to date.
jmanwantsboost

I'm leaning towards a hatch for a sister ride for my sedan. Love to get a stock si and swap the suspension.
jmanwantsboost

Pretty much pissed at my car. The bad throwout is making it damn near impossible to shift into fifth. Gotta get this effing thing fixed. I sold one problem and bought my way into another. Such is life I suppose. Sorry had to vent :/
jmanwantsboost

Today I got my wiper squirters working. It was an adventure. I had to clip out a smashed section of hose and coupled it back together with a clipped cap from a grease gun needle and recycled electrical tape. Then I had to pull apart my airgun and lube it up. Then I sprayed a surprising amount of gunk out of the accord squirters I got. Got it hooked back up after a successful test. I really need these in my area. Following a big truck after a rain gunks out my windshield pretty bad.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Sweet!
jmanwantsboost

I was excited to fix something myself! Also I found out my colleges auto shop program will fix cars so I think i'll have them throw in my parts when I get them.
jmanwantsboost

So I did some digging and I think my d15b motor was once a jdm carbed motor. It has the mechanical fuel pump port blocked off. But it's converted to dual port. Idk if there's much difference from what I can find. Kinda cool though.

I don't think there's any internal difference. When it had the carbs it would've made more power though.
jmanwantsboost

Really that's interesting. I'd love to get a hold of a d15b vtec one day. That's my dream motor. Haha. Well I only have 30k in my motor and the mileage is amazing.
HondaJunkie

Ive wanted a D15b myself im trying to get a head right now and do a minime but they are hard to find.
jmanwantsboost

There was a full swap on the local cl for 250. It needed  only manifolds of your choice and gaskets
jmanwantsboost

But yea I agree. I'd love to build a higher compression mini me. Mabey even a medium boost motor. I'd love to make a bit more power!
jmanwantsboost

So today some crazy shit happened to my transmission. While shifting from third to fourth there was a grinding noise then nothing. The shift gates might as well have been brick walls. I was able to put it into fifth somehow and get it parked. Once parked I found that if the clutch was released in neutral, the car would die. Then even while parked and the clutch depressed the gears were still jammed. If rocked a but I could get into the gears, but when started and the clutch let out it bumped dead. I got a tow home thanks to the pastor of my moms church. I was very grateful. Just last night I bought some part from the member hondajunkie. He's a cool dude and his spare parts will help tons. So now I need to source a cable si tranny and a new throwout bearing and slap asdone goodies in my car. This has been a stressful day :/
~Sp33~

Have you looked to make sure the connections between the gear stick and the transmission are ok?

Majority of trans problems are external to the case.
jmanwantsboost

~Sp33~ wrote:

I haven't the slightest idea where my linkage is and it's too low for me to get underneath her. It was working fine and out of nowhere this happened.

If yours is cable like mine, it's quite easy for the cotter pin to come out if it's damaged or wasn't properly bent back and the shifter cable can 'pop' off the trans like in the picture:

That's located on top at the rear of the transmission housing.

If you have linkages, jack your car up and stick your head under (they'll be where your gearstick is but under the car) make sure nothing has come loose and/or damaged your linkages.
4dred6

We got bars here in the US only the EE wagon came with cables with is
the 4wd. But yea we have bar shift linkages. Maybe the bitch pin came
loose
jmanwantsboost

I'm planning on getting up under her before I start spending money I don't have. But the drive line, aside from the motor, has been problematic since I bought the car. Since the car is down I hope to address these issues unlike the gentlemen I bought the car from who didn't do a clean job on any of the tranny work. I love my car and anything I love gets all the attention I can give.  I hope to be back ef'n the streets soon.
incendiaryrain

that sucks man Sad i know how it feels to get a new car and have it break right away. it is an older car though so its going to need some love.
89 LX SOHC ZC

That sucks man I hope its something simple.
jmanwantsboost

Thanks for the support I rather needed it. I have set to making a game plan to get her back on the road. First i need to get my boss to hook me up with some more hours. Ive only got to finish tomorrow and thursday at school. its winter quarter finals haha. then once i can bank enough instead of keeping the six puck clutch and buying just a throwout bearing ill just get a new clutch kit. the sachs kit is 119 at oreillys auto and the autozone kit is the same. i wont be able to afford an exedy but oh well. then i need to source a decent si tranny for cheap. my car has one now and im almost positive its toast and i dont want to downgrade. i figure that shouldnt be too much and hondajunkie is sending me two year old cv axels and a clutch cable as mine is a tad sticky. with all that i think the driveline should be squared away and i can finally bank some money towards my spring tune up. id like to get some long running plugs and synthetic oil to increase efficiency. and it would be awesome to rid my car of the ugly wheels that were slapped on it to sell. lol.
jmanwantsboost

and im a whore for taking pics of my work to share with you guys. so when the parts roll in, you be there with me. kinda... haha  Cool
jmanwantsboost

So I picked up a new transmission and flywheel for my car. Didn't need the flywheel, but it has 5k on it and has a nice surface and no glazing. Hoping to get my axels from hondajunkie this week. All I need is to figure out my clutch situation.
HondaJunkie

Good deal man big things are coming I feel it! Yea they said estimated arrival on the axels was this tuesday so im sure they should either be in today or tommarow.
jmanwantsboost

Yea I'll be swinging by the post office tomorrow to check. Might be selling some old shit on cl tomorrow so clutch by next week? I'll probably just sell off my old clutch and flywheel for a bargain if they are any good.
HondaJunkie

Right on man I saw your other post about the clutch I would probably just get one from the autoparts store it has a warranty and you can get it that day instead of waiting another week. I just worry about ebay sellers cause they might send you the wrong one and returning it could be a pain in the ass but thats my opinion hope it works out for you buddy.
jmanwantsboost

Yea I def see your point. I suppose the extra 20 bucks will save my ass. Are sachs clutches decent? That's the one I'm looking at. I just am looking at 150 bucks and my cell bill comes first haha.
HondaJunkie

You know honestly ive never heard of them but I would think cause your local parts store carries it you will be just fine. I dont have a cell phone lol to much money for something that doesnt do shit haha.
4dred6

Yea get the one from auto parts store. Haha I don't have phone service, I just use wifi and free text apps  Very Happy
jmanwantsboost

Haha. I don't have wifi so I'm stuck paying. Its how I've  posted on here for the most part. I'll see how well the week goes. I'm ready to drive my car again.
jmanwantsboost

CARE PACKAGE INBOUND! Today I got my package from Honda junkie! The parts look great thanks man!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice to hear parts are comming together.
HondaJunkie

Excellent glad to hear it hope I taped the box up enough lol.
jmanwantsboost

Yea man it was perfectly wrapped! And it was my bday on Monday, so I got a couple cards with money. 100 bucks! Score! And there was this ugly old fiberglass boat I put on cl yesterday for 150 obo, and a guy came today and took it for a hundred. I didn't care to Dicker cause it was ugly and not mine. Just junk. Sooooo tomorrow I'm getting myself a clutch!
FlatTireRacer

Sachs is a good brand. Had a friend who got one for his VW GTI and it lasted a log time.
jmanwantsboost

Thanks for the info! That's what I'll be buying so I'm glad the clutches hold up! God now I just need someone to help me put it all in haha
jmanwantsboost

Btw  I wanted to know what it means by large bearing tranny with si/zc trannies? And I seem to have a 21 spline tranny so that's important!
jmanwantsboost

So its 129.99 for either the autozone clutch or the sachs clutch at oreillys. I'll probably get the latter. Napa autoparts doesn't have a clutch.
HondaJunkie

Man it will be nice when you put all that stuff in I love the feeling of breaking a clutch in just to know all your transmission stuff is pretty much new is one less of a headache.
4dred6

Nice to hear man
jmanwantsboost

I've never broken in a clutch. How does that work? And does anyone know about the large bearing tranny thing. What bearings exactly are larger haha?
jmanwantsboost

4dred6 wrote:

Thanks it feels great to have it come together, especially after having such a crappy thing happen.
jmanwantsboost

Ordered my clutch. Will be here tomorrow. Made sure it was for my 21 spline tranny. Will go to pull a part and get my motor mount. I'll need tranny fluid also. But idk how much or what kind to get!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Glad you got your clutch ordered the transmision takes 1.9 quarts of honda mtf.
jmanwantsboost

Where do you get that? I don't have the means to buy dealership parts as there aren't any nearby.
4dred6

Nice. I have motor oil in my tranny I can't remember what weight tho.

jmanwantsboost wrote:

Im not sure if you can get it anywhere but the dealer you may want to ask the auto parts store when you pick up your clutch.
jmanwantsboost

Hmmm. I gotta figure something high quality I can get at an auto parts store. I can flush and update later, but I need a simple fix. I'm so excited to drive my car again

Haha yeah I guess the original manual said you could use 10-30 motor oil but I guess that was before they changed oil formulas.

Hold up 10-30 motor oil? I figured it would be something heavy duty. Like heavier gear oil.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Yes sir 10-30 motor oil from what i've read 10-30 works but it causes heavy shifting but it is useable.
jmanwantsboost

I sure won't be doing that. I feel like a transmission needs tranny lube that's formulated for the unique situation in a gearbox. Motor oil isn't made for a tranny. I'm only gonna get to do this once, and I'm nervous about getting it right. I don't wanna mess it up.
4dred6

jmanwantsboost

Would it be cheaper to  make a trip to the dealer? That's almost 30 bucks lol.
HondaJunkie

Ive had excellent luck with royal purple oil before although ive never tried there transmission gear oil might be something to look at but it is kind of expensive.
jmanwantsboost

Hmmm. I just need two quarts! And I got Moar parts today! My clutch kit!

Didn't make it to the yard. I used up the cash I had so will go Monday for a motor mount
HondaJunkie

Ahhhh dont you just love that new clutch smell.
jmanwantsboost

Haha yea I got a whiff Wink. I'm so close now! And if the six puck in my car now is good I'm gonna sell it
jmanwantsboost

This bummer is turning exciting.  Very Happy
89 LX SOHC ZC

Glad to see the clutch I hope you get her in soon.
4dred6

Sweet   Very Happy
jmanwantsboost

That's so weird. The pic I posted of my clutch is a little blue mystery box. I just was surprised at how small the clutch was Very Happy

Honda transmissions don't use gear oil. Manual Honda transmissions are supposed to be filled with just regular 10w-30 oil.

Ya don't use gear oil. Royal purple synchromesh is awesome. I have it in my car. It is kinda pricey but well worth it. Imo. If you have a small grind it will get ride of it and it will shift like butta  Very Happy
