Irish Sedan Build

Hey said I might as well throw up a log for my Ef since its kinda turning into a project.. I bought the car 4weeks ago as a run around while I build Ef8 CRX SiR...

So the car came completly stock ED2 in Torino Red (wine colour), this alone was one of the reasons for buying it because its the same colour as my CRX Cool..
It has a pretty weak D14 1400cc duel carb engine It has no power steering, electric windows, air con, sunroof so its really light..
First mod was fitting a set of 15" Mugen RNRs in black with a red lip with Toyo Proxies.
I then removed the ugly standard rectangle plate adaptor on the front bumper (rectangle/oblong plates are standard in Ireland Rolling Eyes )
I then fitted a kenwood flip frond headunit and new door speakers since the stock parts were all wrecked..
JDM Triangle Advan stickers were added over the front fender indicators..
Front strut brace, earthing kit and sprayed rocker cover also fitted

I now have a parts list mounting up at home which will be added over the next couple of weeks, stuff like:

JDM DC2 blcck Recaros
JDM EK9 TEIN Super Street coilovers
JDM EF9 Floormats
JDM EK9 larger sun visors
JDM EF8 Front bumper splitter
Rear Strut brace
Custom straight through exhaust and decat
Nardi Steering Wheel
Oil catch tank

Will post up pics and updates as soon as I can

Paul
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Hello!  Your build sounds awesome.  Can't wait for the pix.
C-Rex

TEINs didnt work might be going down the accord/prelude set up instead Smile
C-Rex

Heres just a quick pic exactly as I got it with my CR-X

Pic with the Mugen RNRs on it (nothing else done at that stage)
C-Rex

Got the Recaro seats fitted and Nardi wheel.. Its getting better everyday Very Happy
C-Rex

Heres an updated pic of the car and a few goodies I picked up today

Now scraping the road and a Sebring exhaust added

14" Work Equip 01s  Going on soon with sticky tyres

Sunpro 10k RPM Tacho and shift light because stock clocks only go to 8k RPM which is a bit below vtec tachos

New Gmax 40mm Springs (a safer set up  )

More done just no photos yet vtec civic doner car got too Very Happy
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Welcome and I'm loving your sedan!  Please keep us updated with your progress.
C-Rex

Heres a few pics of the Recaros, Nardi Wheel and The Works Fitted Cool

89civicracer

Loving the car. .
love the wheels also! more pics!
krazeeazian04

wow! feelin those works. and the recaros. how hard was it to put those in?
~Sp33~

Those wheels work well. lol Wink
C-Rex

Thanks lads took me ages to find em and especially in 14s couldnt believe my look hopefully they will clear the Vtec calipers now.. Will try get more pics soon when Ive a few more bits installed Cool

The recaros were a very easy fit, use standard CRX rails..
The front bolts straight on and if you look at the back you can bend a washer kind of thing that allows that bolt on straight on too then two spacers on the side closest to the door and your sorted very easy really
Type-S EF

with that CRX, i can see why you feel the sedan to be lame to drive, at least at first.

Looking good, seems like someone else might be catching up to me in number of wheels and tires.
C-Rex

@DX-T AWD: What have you in your wheel collection??

Ive got:
15" Volk Racing TE37s White
15" Mugen RNRs Black with Red Lip
15" Mugen RNRs Silver x2 sets
15" Sparco NSIIs Black With Red Lip
15" 5zigen FNO1RCs Bronze
14" Work Equip 01s

And then various other 14"-16" crappy wheels and a set of 15" TRD Split rims that I gave to my dad for his AE101 levin Smile

At the start was missing the CRX but its kinda slipping to the side now while Im building the Civic ordering the engine mounts and fuel pump asap hopefully will be done with the B16a by the first weekend in April for a drag day in Northern Ireland Cool
Type-S EF

you've got me beat!

Ive got:

14" 91 CRX SI wheels on my 63,000 mile CRX (only set smaller than 15")
15" steelies with hubcaps with snow tires
15" unknown konigs, black 5 spoke with polished lip and 225/45R15 Rs2's
15" 2000 civic SI wheels, currently only 2 Dunlop SP 9000
16" 512 brand multi spoke with polished lip and crap federal tires

17" DC5 Type R replicas, need a little cleaning up, and having 2 widened for 245 rear tires, still can't get someone to help me get center caps, it seems impossible here in the US
C-Rex

Well finally got pics of the doner car 91 Honda Civic iVT 138k miles..
and the all important B16a

First pics the day I collected it

As ye can see the car is fairly F**ked so didnt feel so bad breaking it appart.
Parts that are needed and perfect are:
B16a 1600cc DOHC Vtec Engine
Cable J1 Gearbox
Bigger front disks and calipers
Rear disk conversion
Seibring Exhaust
Full wiring loom..

The car was running fine but not really going in a straight line
~Sp33~

I really like that style of rim on your donor car. They shine up really nice.

Must have been in a fairly descent accident too.
C-Rex

The rims on the hatch? They are standard iVT wheels..
Pikanibbles

Looking good.

The Equips are cool, but this  Shocked   The stance looks spot on to me.

C-Rex

You prefer the RNRs over the Works?
Will try get some day light pics of a few different sets of wheels on the car but I think 14s are the way to go.. They clear the Vtec brakes too, barely... Cool
89civicracer

Great looking so far. . keep it up!
Pikanibbles

Quote:

It might just be the way the pictures are composed, but the pic with the RNRs looks good.  Equips score big on rarity/cool points though  Wink

How do the Gmax springs ride?

Any progress with the B16 swap?  I will be watching this closely and would be interested to know what parts you needed to use/change.  I assume that you'll need to swap the bonnet for a VT item.  Interested to know how you get around the fuel tank issue too.

I'm toying between a B16a1 and a lightly boosted D16z6.  I like the B-series, but the D-series will allow me to fit my 4wd without the need to swap to CRV parts.  Hmm, decisions, decisions.   Confused

Keep us updated  Smile
~Sp33~

C-Rex wrote:

Yeah, we didn't get them here, I think they one of the better looking stock rim's Honda have produced.
C-Rex

Going for hasport engine mounts and inline fuelpump and fuel filter just waiting on parts.. 8weeks so far for the mounts Mad

Had the car entered in a 1/4mile as a B16 but will have to do it in the stock 1.4 engine but will be fun still Cool  Must post some new pics up its stripped with just a Bride Zeta III seat to go in, it'll be light if nothing else Embarassed
Not using the Gmax yet will be on for the 1/4 mile though so will get back to ya on that..
Bseries is a cool swap but I can see wher your coming from with d series.. Will you be going to JAE this year Ill be there in the sedan anyway..

@ Sp33: They are a pretty nice wheel alright suit the EF shape really well Cool
Pikanibbles

Yes, I'll be at JAE.  It will be my first year there as previous attempts to attend have always had to be abandoned at the last minute  Sad

Still, I hope to have mine lowered and rolling on some suitable rims by then, if nothing else.

Looking forward to seeing your car in the flesh, so to speak.

Wow, I've just read the whole of this thread again.  I didn't realize that the spec of your car differed from the spec of mine.  I thought all UK cars were equiped the same  Confused   I guess Irish models must differ to English cars.

I thought all UK ED2s came in GL spec?  With power steering, central locking, 4x electric windows, electric sunroof and electric adjusting mirrors as standard.  All this extra weight pulled along by the same D14 twin carb engine.  Mine's quite lardy compared to yours.  No wonder it feels sluggish!

Oddly, mine was imported into England in 1993 but has full GL spec, including RHD.  Gawd knows where it came from originally  Confused

Keep up the good work.  I can't wait to see it at JAE  Very Happy
C-Rex

Update at last, picked up these few bits recently should be fitting some stuff by this weekent will throw pics up later..

C-Rex

UPDATE AT LAST:D
Well have being working away on the car the whole time just no time to throw up pics so heres some of what Ive been doing..

After my first attempt at TEIN Coilovers (off an EK9) which didnt fit properly, I managed to find a set for the ef chassis specifically... EF8/EF9 (CRX and Hatch vtecs to be specific)

One problem with them was the rear LCAs.. Being a basic european spec it had the fork type rear suspension and the coilovers I got were Jap eye type. Fitting them ment changing the rear LCAs which I happened to have on a scrapped JDM EF CRX
LCAs BEFORE

LCAs AFTER

TEIN sitting in the cleaned up Jap type rear LCA

Comparison between old and new

Front fitted

How its sitting now. With 15" Mugen RNRs
C-Rex

Have started cleaning up the work wheels for it too since the laquer on the spokes had gone all cloudy and most of the black paint was coming away too.. Not finished them yet but paint and laquer is stripped after hours of work and are ready to polish and paint then

When theyre done then they'll be threated to a set of 185/60/14 Toyo Proxie R888s that I got from www.camskill.co.uk

Eventhough Im taking out the D14 engine and gearbox for the swap too I done a few tidy up bits to the engine bay and a few mods that will help with the conversion later..
First up was the battery relocation..
Since Im probably gonna get a J's Racing induction kit for the B16a engine the battery had to go to make room so with a load of battery cable I wired the original battery into the rear of the car with all the wiring hidden well away. Also a rear strut brace added;)

Airbox and all the pipeing etc were removed too to run it on open carbs
Straight through headlight and Direct cold air feed to carbs
Rocker cover resprayed and airbrushed anarchy symbol
Rad over flow bottle removed
Front upper strut brace
All battery holders etc removed
Custom aluminium exhaust heat shield and airbox made up
Red earth Straps
And a serious clean up in the bay itself so now its looking like this:D
C-Rex

More to come later interior, exterior and brake mods..
Will be sending off for some nice parts for the B16a soon engine mounts are due next week
Pikanibbles

Good to see progress on this.  Looking forward to seeing more.

Is this to be a track-day car only?
C-Rex

No definately not this is ment as my daily run around just with a little difference Laughing

Was doing a drag day last saturday in Bishopscourt NI and done a track day yesterday to say it done well is an understatement.. It out handled pretty much every car out there and underbraked them all to into the bends on standard brake set up with £10 brake pads Cool
Pikanibbles

Sounds like a hoot  Very Happy

I've had a few highly tuned stripped out old skool Opels and Minis as my daily drivers in the past, but these day I prefer a few more creature comforts.  Perhaps it's my age  Laughing

Still, I love what you're doing.  It makes me want to get out and work on mine.

Build threads FTW   Smile
C-Rex

Oh she'll be gettin her interior back was just stripped out for the racing and made the battery relocation waaaaay easier..
Might try fit the iVT Hatch seat covering on the sedan rear seats, would be very nice interior wise then Cool

Hows yours coming along? Are you interested in cream coloured MR5s too? Fella here selling a set and Ill be across at japfest around mid May in Castle Combe could bring them:wink:
Pikanibbles

No actual work carried out on mine yet, but I have been collecting a few JDM parts.  Nothing as exciting as yours.  I need to save a few more £££.  I'll start a thread when work starts and/or I have something interesting.

What sort of price for the MR5s?  I've just missed a set on CRX-UK, but I didn't have the money at the time.   Sad
C-Rex

Dont know what money is on them but will let ya know as soon as I do
C-Rex

Heres some more pics of whats done on it since

Cusco Fly Off Hand Brake Button and Mugen Gearknob fitted

DC2 Black Recaros, Sabelt 4point harnesses and Rear upper strut brace

My spaced up bonnet

Sitting on the TEINs over Black and Red Mugen RNRs

CRX Front lip and the air feed fitted
Type-S EF

About how much were your DC2 seats? in USD if possable, i want to get some really bad.
C-Rex

I paid 500euro for them on EK rails
I then swapped the rails for 190euro wort of parts
So they are costing around 310euro which would be about $400-450 I suppose...

They were a real bargin though they would normally be double that Crying or Very sad
89civicracer

Looking good. . love those WORK wheels. . They look hot on the 4 doors.  . Embarassed
C-Rex

And will be back on this one soon Cool
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Hell yeah dude, I love following this build.
C-Rex

The engine work on the sedan will start soon. Engine mounts are here in Ireland just to collect them now Cool
C-Rex

Well another up date due:

My engine mounts Finally arrived from Hasport. Quality is savage and E170 cheaper than the official Irish distributorbt Rolling Eyes

Changed the Nardi Steering Wheel I had in it too.. Got a much nicer/older style one now to suit the car..
Old one left, New (older style one) on the right Laughing

Heres one of my refurbished 14" Works on R888 Proxies.. Took ages to strip all the old paint and laquer and polish them up but well worth it..  4 new centre caps on the way from Japan too

And dont worry the bubbles on the rear arch will be sorted too Wink

HKS Iridium Plugs for the B16 once its ready to go in

Heres the full brake set up off the hatch.. All new disks and pads on the way. Calipers being reconditioned and sprayed a Project MU Green, braided lines and tidying up all the arms/ respraying them

And heres a Rolling Road print out from saturday.. Got 96.9bhp and 92ft lbs torque from a basically standard 1.4 Duel Carb engine.. Was only expecting 60ish Smile

Whats left to get:
Front and rear pads
Braided lines
Clutch and flywheel
New rad
Fuel Pump and custom fuel lines
Timing belt kit
2 new CV joints (just to be safe)
Full bushing kit

Basically thats all I need to get the car up and runing well its just small tiding up bits then after all that stuff (hopefully Embarassed )
C-Rex

as far as i know carbed EF's have a mechanical cable to the gear box where as the FI cars use an electrical set up with a speed sencer on the crank?

just wanna know.... i might have to sort something out in the future.
Sad

No they didnt work Embarassed
I bought that set tried to fit but they wouldnt work so after a few weeks I bought another set of TEINs off a EF9 Civic SiR for E400 Laughing  They're on it now and feeling great..

More updates soon just ot the money to finish the build so will hopefully be some nice bits coming over the next few weeks
~Sp33~

Keep it up! Hope you have lots of track pics Very Happy
C-Rex

I will..
Hopefully be competing in the Irish Time attack series late next year in it.. But still gonna be a daily driver too Laughing

Should be well able to beat some of the bigger cars since it was faster than a few SiRs, vvti Celicas, FTOs etc the last track day with a 1.4  Cool
C-Rex

Well took the car out yesterday  for a quick wash and a parade around on a few wheels.. And a few more small bits

As it was

Love the cf's with the shields. . those are tight!
C-Rex

Yea I know where theres a set of shields but they are expensive still love em though Cool ...

Thats my 14s for the sedan have a good few 15s gone through on the CRX too Embarassed
Just really love how wheels can completely change the look of a car, and wheels can be got pretty cheap here Wink
Misha

agree, wheels and the drop can really make thigns work.

everythign is way overpriced in canada Sad
C-Rex

New stuff in canada is way cheaper though.. Ordering alot over the net from all over the world in the next few days Very Happy
~Sp33~

I vote, silver cf48's.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

i vote silver too but am intrigued about the gold.

love all the pix, post more  Razz
C-Rex

Really?? CFs over the Works Shocked
I think the Works make the car, although the Cfs are actually pretty ok on it..

Im still convinced the Gold will be cool on the CFs but silver will be no bother.. I just have to strip the paint off them fully and tidy up the lip since they are quiet grubby and there perfect silver..

Gold will be a pain to spray but will be different and should suit the wine.. I think Confused

Potos take too long I get no work done cause I keep loosing the camera Rolling Eyes
C-Rex

Well got myself a new ORC (Ogura Racing Clutch) 309 Clutch and Flywheel set up for the B series engine yesterday.. The thing looks unreal pity it wont be seen when its installed but should be well up to the job.
Got it a great price too (eventhough this cost more than the car:mad) )

The internals are gonna be ordered tonight too hopefully so some very nice bits due in the next week or so
Kurosawa

The CF48s look great! I liked the RNR's to...
C-Rex

You like your mugens so Laughing

RNRs are cool but I prefer keeping 14s on the Sedan
Kurosawa

true, 14's look nice. 15's also Laughing
Misha

hello sir, whats new?
C-Rex

Waiting on B16b Pistons now to do the engine rebuild.. Its been 4weeks now since I ordered them Evil or Very Mad

C-Rex

Happy Birthday Sedan

MattyJ
C-Rex

The wooden one??

OBA is all thats written on it.. An Italian Made steering wheel
Got it off an Importer that took it out of a S14 Silvia
C-Rex

Heres just two pics from yesterday while on a test run of the revived 1.4 engine.. Running the 1.4 in one more trackday hopefully so I had to do the headgasket:D
I was trying to get the car out maybe just a week earlier and heve a good camera to take proper shots but as usual thet didnt go to plan and all the autumn leaves (for a cool backdrop) are gone

And yes thats why my cars are always covered in shite, these are the roads around where I live Ha Ha Embarassed
gtrpaulfarrell

Like the plates! Are they legal??
C-Rex

They sure are if the car is registered before january 1st 1991
~Sp33~

What an awesome looking road.
C-Rex

Yea loads of them around where I live..
I was there around 20 minutes and no one at all passed its great  Laughing
C-Rex

WOW it been so long since I updated this anyway here it goes....

Well finally got sick of having the Sedan sitting up so Ive got the 1.4 back up and running A1 again..

The headgasket went last year after alot of abuse on track, drag etc It didnt bother me at the time because I had planned on getting the B16 in soon after but with things coming up and other projects on the way it fell to the backround..

A few weeks ago I replaced the headgasket, skimmed the head, re ground valves and done all valve seals etc but still had problems loosing water.. Again I lost interest and robbed the battery for the RX7 slowly it was gathering spiders out in the yard:(

So yeaterday I finally bit the bullit and said I WOULD GET IT GOING AGAIN..

Treated the car to a new battery but over time earths had slightly broken down and contacts corroded.. After about 30mins I had all the major earths cleaned and grounding right and the D14 roared back into life:D

Next on the agenda was to find the water leak.. The oil was fine so I was pretty sure it hadnt leaked ito the sump and the exhaust wasnt giving out any white smoke so cylinders seemed safe too..  After a good bit of rooting I came to the cause of the problem....... The water pump..
Seems like the was a port thats exhausts water if the pump f**ks up and this was now pi$$sing out water.. A trip down the back to an old D15 engine I had lying up and I had a good water pump again, fitted to the sedan and the D14 was back to its former glory:happy)

Now the small maintenence bits that built up over time..

DOORS: The boot door latch had got a right bating over time so much so that it eventually it broke away the latch altogether. After a bit of measuring and bating I was finally happy with the position and welded it on.. It worked again Woo Hoo. Locking boot again:D

Again since buying the car another problem I had ignored was the drivers door restraint, the little bar that stops it opening too far had pulled from the sill/pillar thing.. I took the whole mechanism appart and found alot of wear on the arm itself after a little grinding it was moving smoothly again. Re fitted and tacked the whole lot back in place.. Excellent

Next up ELECTRICS!!
Lights on the car were gone all shite ways too.. Rear bulbs were abit all over the place and the right hand side tail light was holding more water than the titanic.. Fogs had stopped working completely after taking them off to get some pics of the set up and the drivers side head/dim lights were only working as a bare glow..
So without going through every problem individually I changed bulbs,re-earthed, resealed, found a plug I forgot about, resealed and changed two fuses in for the lights.. Result = Happy Me

The Horn had also become a bit patethic! After removing the bumper and getting a lok around it turns out it had just broken down over time (same as on the CRX).. So hopefully picking one up this evening

As part of my ever growing parts list for the CRX I had got a C-Pillar brace from the states but for some reason was no where near fitting it.. Bad news for the CRX good News for the sedan.. With a little bit of cutting of plastics and fiddleing with the rear upper seatbelt mounting point anther brace was adding to the stability of the sedan and loks quite menacing inside ther rear window

So that kinda covers what I done yesterday
Immediate plans now are:
-Find new horn and then refit it and the front bumper
-Re clean up engine bay and fit all the alloy guards again (maybe some paint)
-Tidy up the rear arches again before they go too bad they are getting bad but should be able to sort them before they are too far gone
-Get the car back on the road and start preping it for vtec

I do plan on keeping this going now.. Cant wait to be on the road with it again regardless of what engine.. Such a fantastic car
