Honda Civic ED5 - Alice (Large Pictures)

1991 Honda Civic Sedan (ED5)

I came across her pretty much by accident I was initially looking for a 1991 Honda Civic Shuttle. However that didn't really work out as they're quite scarce here and the only one that I found that was up for sale had been sold before I even got to take a look at it, oh well! Then I was thinking about keeping my brother's Honda Civic Hatchback. Finally had decided not to keep it and kept on looking for a Shuttle and then this turned up and fell in love with her!

Cheers! Apart from the fact that I haven't got my license yet but that's not the reason, that's in the process. (Recently turned 18 and all that)

Anyways, over here there's a bit of a problem with engine swaps especially when it comes to a Honda. They have a bit of a bad reputation when it comes to the amount of accidents associated with them. Because of this most insurance companies won't insure you at all if you're getting a "big engine". You might be able to go as far as a ZC or D15B VTEC but that's still going to take a bit of effort to get. B16A or stronger engines are almost impossible to insure if you're under 21.

The system is bullshit if you ask me and you can't do much about it, no insurance means you can't drive it on public roads.

damn almost everyone here under 21 would be screwed lol

I've seen your cars before lads, I must say, bloody beautiful rides you got going on there!

I haven't seen a sedan done up nice and proper here before except maybe a couple of ricers which ruined the whole look of the poor thing. Finding spare parts locally will be a bit of a pain. Sad

Welcome looks like a good start going hear love the OZ's.
fij1

It's been a while since I've last updated this page but she's been sitting in the back of the garage untouched for quite a bit while my brother's daily EG and track EK are finished. Luckily both are almost done so it's time to start thinking about what I'm going to do next.

I've decided to give it a brand new paint job, after a couple of debating I'm going to have it done in some shade of white. Any suggestions? I was thinking the Championship White found on EK9's.

It's currently on the Black Honda Steelies while my brother borrows the OZ's but his rims are arriving tomorrow so they're going back on her.

I'm getting new headlights as I suspect the ones on it are from a CRX and they don't really fit weird and the sidelamps need changing too. (They're glued on or something in a poor attempt to repair them) I  was thinking about getting the original EDM ones and have the sidelamps done orange again as I quite like them in that regard.

I've got new mouldings and bits of plastics to replace with the old slightly worn out ones. And I'll be on the look out for a chrome grill too! I've found a badge in the compartment inside and I suspect it's the rear badge that's missing so that's a relief as they're a pain to find over here.

There's some slight traces of rust on the edges of the doors which I'm going to be fixing over the coming weeks.

The interior is in need of a change, the driver's seat has a bit of actual foam missing and the others just need a thorough cleaning or replacing.

TLDR Version :

New Paint
New Headlights/Sidelamps
New Mouldings and Plastics all around
Fix slight rust on the side
New Grill
New Seats & Carpets

Bloody hell haha, some love going around for silver! I have to agree she does look good in that colour, not sure if I want to change it anymore though. But if I am definitely going for White.

stormdrop wrote:

I do believe they are shaved mate, they were probably in terrible condition and the previous owner decided to take them off. I was considering looking for new ones but they're actually hard to find, as all sedan parts are around here.

Moving on. Brother's rims finally arrived and have been fitted on the EG so my OZ's are finally vacant. Very Happy

Needs to go a little lower from the back but so far I'm really happy with how they look on her. Can't wait 'till I'm legally allowed to drive her!

I could be wrong, but most d13 ED's didn't have moldings from factory (doors had no cutouts for the clips).

Is it definitely an ED5? Most d13 ones i've seen are ED1 or ED2.

Car looks great either way!

It's been a while so I thought I'd post a quick agenda update:

  • I'm going to go take a look at a pair of front Prelude seats which are dead cheap. ( http://www.maltapark.com/Photos/Item2193048_1.jpg )
  • Pick a new colour for the old girl (I've decided on white, leaving the bumpers as they are with their raw plastic look).
  • Lower the rear!

The workshop where she's going to be sprayed is being cleared out, making room and cleaning up mostly. Other than that we'll be looking into that rear ride height.

As most of you have noticed this is a very slow build due to very limited cash flow and free time but I'm trying my best to get her street-worthy by the time I get my licence. (Working on that, driving tests here are a bitch.)

*Some snapshots will be uploaded ASAP, guys and gals.*

Cheers  Very Happy

Yeah man for sure! Can't wait for her first Honda Fest as we call our larger Honda meets over here.
fij1

As promised here are some snapshots of my interior and some things which I'll be looking to fix relatively soon so they're presentable again.

The Roof Moudlings; I got some replacements but I'm not sure if they fit or not, they're from a 89 Civic Hatch, what do you think? I'll obviously try them but I was wondering if it's possible with/without modifications to them.

My headlights and cornerlights need massive work, the headlights are from what I can tell, a Honda CRX and the cornerlights were poorly fixed on. I'm looking for replacements, any idea if those from a hatch fit? I got some running around from my brother's old EF Hatch.

The grill looks like has some rust or gunk underneath it, this too needs work. I'll be looking into that when we're reaching the final stages of preparing for the re-spray. (Which is hopefully going to be soon)

This the interior I got going on, it's basically completely stock bar the steering wheel and gear knob which came out of a CRX SiR. Everything's in spick and span condition but the driver's seat needs a little work; or I might just replace the front two.

The car that's been keeping us behind on schedule! But the big girl needs her love and attention!

Cheers for reading this far!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

The hatch gutters are shorter so that wont work on the sedan.

Just a quick update for ya'll; The girl's in her little booth in my Dad's workshop. Further room will be made, she'll be stripped and shaved, and once I get some paint going on, sprayed.

Cheers.
4dred6

sweet
fij1

Another update:

Work has begun and the girl's being stripped out and checked for any rust, dents or shoddy paintwork which need to be addressed asap.

Started out from the back of the car, namely the trunk and rear bumper. We took the lights and garnish out and discovered a bit of rust on the right side of the boot lid where the garnish sticks in so that's being taken care of. The bits where water is supposed to run off of the boot-lid are a little rusty too and need some work.

I'm not sure if I should opt for a new door or attempt to sort this out because it's quite a mess from what I can tell.

Next, I'm going to need some guidance, any idea on how to safely remove the rear window without breaking the glass, the plastics I can get new ones but yeah it's quite important I don't break it. I have a little bit of rust which is in a tight spot which we need to take care of. (Sorry if this has been asked before, if there's a post I'd be more than happy to read it if I was pointed towards the right direction.)

As you can see we've discovered some unpleasant surprises but other from the window business, all can be fixed with relative ease.

Cheers in advance lads and lasses.

EDIT: By any chance does a Civic Shuttle (Wagon) front bumper fit on a 91 Sedan? If I could find one in decent condition, I'd certainly consider it.
4dred6

i would just get another door. and you can make the wagon bumper fit with some modification.

fij1

We've been busy working on the girl and the project is coming along very nicely!

How she's sitting at the moment

Paint's coming off and all that.

Some friend of ours donated this to us, I think it's off the same CRX I got the Steering and the Gear Knob from.

I found a donor to get some parts out of for a great deal! (EU200 for the whole thing as is, and considering the price for parts around here that's an incredible deal as one door was going to set me back around 100EU). I'm taking various parts out of it either to use on my car, keep as spare or just sell to regain the price spent on the donor.

Poor thing took quick a big knock, we don't have any details on what happened but the person that crashed it, sold it to us so he's fine.

The interior is pretty much brand new with the exception of the passenger seat which could use a good cleaning but otherwise it's in great shape so we jumped at the opportunity. I'm taking various parts out of it either to use on my car, keep as spare or just sell to regain the price spent on the donor.

To recap:

Rear Left Door (with the glass window and everything.)
Front & Rear Seats
Steering Wheel
Rear Bumper
Boot Lid
Center Console
Glove Box
Rear Honda Badges
Seat Belts
...I'll list more if I come about something that I might need.

Thanks for reading this far and sorry about the vertical photos.

If you know how to ship you could make some good money off that rear bumper.
fij1

EF Sedan Enthusiast wrote:

Cheers for the advice but shipping to somewhere like the USA would yield astronomical shipping rates and would probably put people off... Crying or Very sad I will check how much it would cost to get it as far as the UK, though. How much do they go for over there, if I may ask? Over here (Malta) you could probably get one for about EU100 tops but people here just make up prices irrelevant to what they're actually worth.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

You could ask $500.0 USD.  Reason being they aren't readily available in the US market.

If I had a good agent in Malta I'd buy and ship it to the US myself.

Bloody hell! That's more than what I got the entire car for! Didn't know prices were that high over there. Over here Sedans aren't as valued as say an EF Hatchback or CRX would so it's nice to see they get the appreciate they deserve elsewhere! Smile

Many thanks, friend. Very Happy

Took the donor apart, except for some things which are certainly on the to-do list.

I've basically got all of these which are in exquisite shape:

  1. 4 x Complete Doors (With Windows)
  2. Steering Wheel
  3. Gear Knob
  4. Glove Box
  5. Sun Shades
  6. Rear-view Mirror
  7. Front and Back Seats
  8. Seat Belts
  9. A D13B engine
  10. Boot lid
  11. Roof plastics
  12. Rear Bumper
  13. Center Console
  14. Spare Wheel with Original Honda Center Caps
  15. Rear Window
  16. Stock Exhaust System
  17. Rear Badges

That's basically all I could take out of it, if you know about anything that I'd be wise to keep, let me know. (The front is totally smashed so it has to be something from the inside or back of the car.)

My car's looking in good shape and should be due for paint in a while. I've got some ''rare'' parts I'd like to find, mainly for the interior and I'll be roaming eBay for the next few months.

Here's a quick (a couple of second's worth) photoshop on what it should look like when it's done:

The rims aren't exactly the same as mine but I'm using their color scheme, not sure if I should go with white decals or yellow ones.

Here's a picture of the rims used in the photoshop:

I agree with the yellow.

You'll love the Integra center console and arm rest setup.  I had it in my old EX.  The trick to make it fit with the auto belts is to cut out the guts so that you can squeeze it in between.  It'll take some fine tuning to make it line up right but overall it's a pretty easy install.

I guess I'll be getting that paint off and have them re-painted and I'll get my brother to work on the decals in yellow then!

By auto-belts, I'm assuming you mean the Automatic Seatbelts, mine doesn't have those, would that effect the outcome? I have the ones that are up against the door column. I've heard they fit in nicely but I might also have an EK2 one which is similar lying around but I'm not sure if they're the same size, make etc.

Cheers, all!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

If you have the manual seat belts then you shouldn't need to modify the console at all.  The only thing you'll need to do is screw down a L bracket to the floor (on the hump near the e brake cables) so that you can secure the back of the arm rest to the car.

I finally got my rear badges sorted! Starting with the re-build while my doors and fenders are sprayed too.

fij1

I guess this is becoming somewhat of a monthly-update haha.

Here's what the car has been going through!

  • Basically the interior has been put back together, carpets, roof, seats and what have you. It's been cleaned and where possible restored so that's that.

  • All the doors have been re-sprayed and aligned perfectly (They used to hang a bit on the hinges when you open them), they even have that clicky-noise when you open them, it's like they're brand new!

  • Wheels have been sent off for sand-blasting.

  • Some factory decals are ready to be stuck onto it as well as new wordings for my OZ's in yellow to be done soon.

Here are some pictures :

Almost done with the exterior, front bumper, hood, headlights and moldings left. Then we're going to give it a bit of a service, as it's been dying for one. Then we're looking at the bottom of the car and later on I might swap my exhaust system for the donor's or get a branded one.

A large portion of the car is done! Every panel has been fitted aside from the front bumper which will be done soon. I have new side-lamps in the mail which should get here soon.

I'm thinking about getting some fog-lights fitted as well but those come later as well as the DC2 Centre Console.

As for now we've gotten the OZ wheels' decals shaved, the wheels themselves sand-blasted and resprayed in a black finish and they are ready for re-wording in a yellow font.

The side-lamps finally arrived in the mail so they shall be going on her as soon as I get the headlight that I am missing. (The ones I was using prior to the re-spray were from a CRX, I think, and hence were fitted poorly and the clips didn't match all that well.)

I'll see if I like them clear, if not I'll have them done-up in orange as they were before.

So here we are almost a year after acquisition and she's pretty much road-ready from her make-over! Here's a couple of snaps I took, I'll upload more tomorrow as I'm lowering it from the rear for a more level front-rear ride-height.

Tons of blood, sweat and tears went into this build as it was refurbished inside out and it's a very different looking car from what it started out as :

The day the windows were put in.

Just after her first night-run.

It seems like forever since I last updated this space so I guess here's news about the build.

The main attraction was the suspension upgrade. I got a set of Street Type K-Sport Coilovers as well as Lower Control Arms and I must say, they're a blessing. The ride is ridiculously comfortable while being a reasonable amount of low.

Without any further due, here's some snapshots:

I post pictures more often on Instagram so some of you might have seen them already.

I'm currently on the look out for great deals for a deep dish steering wheel (OMP or Nardi), a shift knob (Spoon/Tegiwa), Camber Arms (K-Sport/Buddy Club/D2) and other rare OEM Honda parts. I'm also saving up for a new set of wheels to go with that camber, preferably of the wide variety Wink
