Hey from Australia

Yo, my name is Josh and I have a La Mer Green 1988 ED3 Sedan. It's ratty and a bit gross right now but man do I love this thing  Very Happy .
I picked it up for $850 from my sister as she no longer drives (reasons I won't go in to). It's had one owner previous to her who bought it brand new and was relatively well looked after. It's been Serviced by Honda it's whole life and isn't even up to it's next major service  Surprised

So yeah, score! At the moment it's got a busted up front driver side (rhd) fender, some surface rust under the fuel filler, and the bonnet paint has peeled almost completely off. The rest of the car is very straight and the paint/interior is pretty much immaculate  Smile

Only mod so far is fitting my spare mx5 steering wheel as the Honda one was at the end of it's life. The crash padding had come loose and was a pain to drive with.

Plans are to do an oem resto, fix the paint and rust up, replace the broken fender, front lip and dump it on a set of 15" watanabe f8's or maybe some ssr mk3's. Trying to do it all on the cheap lol.

I originally bought it as a daily as the mx5 is getting a bit silly to drive day to day, but I've warmed up to the civic a lot and really love it.

I know this is a bit of a long winded hello, but I've been lurking for a while and I'm glad to finally be on this forum  Cool
EF4lyf3

Welcome to the site!

Clean Clean Clean. I love the color man, and no worries the rust will come off with a good sanding (if its only surface rust). Did one of your buddys post this up for you in the past?
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Welcome indeed.  Glad you posted up.  Really looking forward to seeing what you make of this sedan.
nanotech

Thanks guys. I'm not sure if my mate Jace posted my car or not. If he did, it would have been this photo:

I got some window deflectors/visors for it, but I'm going to repaint the faded B-pillar satin black again with a fresh rattle can first. Plan was to do it two days ago but it's been raining pretty consistent since...
I'm a bit undecided on tail lights as well. Depends what I can get at a wrecker cheap. I'd love the later facelift lights with the centre panel but if that's unattainable, I'll probably just get the red centre finish panel and call it a day. Other mods on the list are to full steam clean the interior and carpets, replace my busted indicator with amber ones and track down a DA Integra front lip. All the ebay lips I've seen look pretty gross...
Like I said before, I'm new to Honda's and this is my first one. I'm pretty noob with it all so I'll be scouting parts and researching a fair while. Right now my main goals are just clean paint and body with decent wheels and drop.
Need to sus the wheel threads on here too while I'm on.
4dred6

Welcome mate, car is looking good.
4dred6

I think this lip looks badass

http://www.ebay.com/itm/88-90-HON...23204bdd79&vxp=mtr&_uhb=1
nanotech

Yeah me too but it flares out at the sides a bit much for my liking and looks pretty big. I was aiming for something a little more subtle. That one is still my fall back plan if I can't get an Integra lip.

There is a staggered set of 14x7.5 +16 and 14x7 +22 ssr formula mesh wheels for sale I can get pretty cheap right now but not sure if it's going to poke a little too much. The Civic looks like I'd be after x7 +35 or something for a clean fit without crazy camber and tyre stretch. Been lurking the fitment thread for research lol. Opinions?

4dred6

i like 15" 16" better
EF4lyf3

Ive been looking for a lip very similar to that. I think im gonna get this one though. I like the way it sticks out compared to the VW lip
4dred6

That lip is sick its a Js racing or Chargespeed rep
nanotech

Probably will end up pulling the trigger on that ebay lip in the end. Though the car needs some attention in other areas first. Gotta replace all the broken stuff and fix the timing etc.

As for those SSR's, any idea how they would fit? I know they are pretty snug on an mx5, well the rears at least. Which makes me question fitment for an EF.
I'd be keen for 15x7 +35 or something te37's if I can find a set. Or even Watanabe f8/f8f's in similar sizing.
EF4lyf3

they should fit just fine really. The offset is what +25? thats about normal if so
HondaJunkie

Welcome man nice sedan wish I could get a rhd. Do you drift your miata by chance?
89 LX SOHC ZC

Welcome looks like a good start.
89ef2

Pull the trigger on those wheels!!!! 14's are one of the sets of wheels I have currently on my car and they are not that bad... wheels would look sick in my opinion
nanotech

I figured the fronts would be ok but the rear pair are 14x7.5 +16 Which seems a little low offset for this car. That's getting close to tyre flush on a miata with a moderate drop.
If it was 14x7 +22 or whatever all round, they'd be sitting in my lounge room right now waiting for tyres LOL.

Don't drift the miata lol. Well, I shred tyres on it time to time but not very often. It's set up as a grip monster right now and is in the process of getting supercharged. I'm still sorted out ecu stuff and today we are finishing installing the half cage.
nanotech

Update:

I now own those SSR mesh wheels, a front lip, repainted my door frames, installed the deflectors, acquired amber tint film for the corner lights, in the process of trading my stock ed3 tails for ef facelift ones and started to work on the rust  Shocked
It has been a busy and expensive weekend... I guess all I need now is coilovers, new fender plus paint and respray the bonnet and it's done  Cool

Will start a proper build thread in the correct section and upload photo's as parts arrive. Very excited  Razz
4dred6

Loving the updates

What happened to your sun visor?
4dred6

Nice shot, I'll send you some pics today man.
Geo-93

Your off to a really good start car is really nice I wanna see a picture of the car with the rims on
EF4lyf3

AGREED^^
nanotech

Well after tonight's stupid ass mistake, it may never have the rims on
Sad
I was tired, it was after midnight, I'd worked a long day and on the way home I was distracted and accidentally under steered into a gutter. The wheel hit the gutter face on, pushing all the load onto the passenger side (RHD) control arms, struts and rack. It now has an absolute shit load of positive camber and a lot of things looked bent in my brief look in the dark. I also saw some cracks Sad
The wheel itself is pretty lipped and doesn't look so great either. I noticed the car looks lower on the damaged side and groans bad on turn in...

I'm pretty disappointed and embarrassed about it. Especially for an accident that shouldn't have happened in the first place. I'll take some photo's in the morning.
4dred6

Damn dude that sucks, are u ok?
4dred6

Check your email. Idk if u still down for the deal.
EF4lyf3

We all make mistakes. only mistake you made was driving home tired man. Its been proven that its more dangerous to drive tired than drunk!. Becareful man, dont want anything bad happening to a fellow sedan lover or a person regardless. on a different note. Is you buddy going to get rid of some pole postion keys anytime soon? im really trying to get one or two!!!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Sucks to hear this man good luck.
4dred6

My cousin flipped over going home from a 14hr shift. He was like 2 miles away from his house. but he's ok. Just some bruises here and there.
EF4lyf3

Damn^^^
nanotech

Hey guys, first off I've been trying to get in contact with my mate about the pole position keys but it's been a pain because he's quite busy lately. He assured me he will get me details but the responses are a far between. Sorry to anyone who's eager for them. They will be available but in limited stock and you might have to wait a tiny bit longer.

As for the car... I've had a good look at it today in the light and it looks ok. It's not as bad as It looked last night in the dark, but it certainly isn't driveable.
The shock is sitting on a 30 degree angle towards the rear of the car now, the upper control arm looks to be bent, the drive shaft/half shaft is sitting on an angle and grazing against what looks like the kframe maybe? Also the hub itself is pushed quite a few inches toward the rear and as such there is heaps of rubber from the tyre left all through the wheel arch. It's a bit depressing but it's ok. It wasn't exactly a high speed or dangerous accident, just a stupid one with bad luck. Had I of been concentrating better, it wouldn't have happened full stop; likewise, had the wheel of been half a turn to the left it would have rolled right up that gutter. Instead, it hit face on and the suspension components got the full brunt of the impact.
But you live and learn ey? I'm not really that bummed about the damage now, more that I had plans today and the next few days that will have to be put on the backburner until this gets fixed. But that's life. Shit happens.

Also there appears to be a HEAP of positive camber too.
4dred6

Good to hear. Hope you can fix it asap.
jmanwantsboost

Young, stupid, and showing off, I wrecked a cherry 90 da teggy Rs. Dumbest thing I've ever done. but we are only human. Parts you can replace but not a life. Glad to hear your ok!
nanotech

Thanks guys
89 LX SOHC ZC

Good to hear its not as bad as you thought I hope you can get her fixed quikly.  In a drunkin stuper not long ago a buddy of mine cought a curb with the right front suspension on his 91 CRX and bent a lower control arm and cracked and bent the crossmember.
nanotech

Well my brother happened to be in the neighborhood today and dropped by on the way home from work. He had a look at the car and took a few bits and pieces off.
I'm glad to have  a mechanic in the family, it's made owning cars a LOT cheaper.

Anyway it turns out that I'm only up for a new cv shaft, lca and radius/caster rod. Apparently I'm lucky that the caster rod snapped on me as it took a lot of the force and spared the rest of the suspension from further damage. I'll do my best to hit up the wreckers tomorrow and pick up what I need. Should be a dirt cheap fix and shouldn't take too long.

So in other news, I scored a set of free dc2r integra rear lca's which apparently will help me run a lot more coilovers, and my ssr's will be here hopefully next week along with some tyres.
Now I just need to decide on coilovers and things will be back in business  Cool
EF4lyf3

Sweet! Thats a good update man. Post some of the stuff you do to or for your car in the "What did you do to your sedan today" thread, I would love to make that a regular thing for everyone todo when they get on the site. Kinda like a huge diary for us all. Keeps the new guys or seasoned vets motivated to get up and wrench or clean up the whip. If you dont want to its totally cool just saying yenno lol. i wanna see pic of your car when you get the wheels though!Very Happy  Very Happy  Very Happy
tenkaracole

this sounds like its going to be cool.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Good to hear its not to bad.
nanotech

Well... So I guess the damage was worth than I though. The car is busted up a little worst than initial observation and a little beyond fixing.
The body frame is bent up pretty bad inside the wheel arch and knocked back an inch. The car would have to be put on a jig and the front pulled back straight which is insanely expensive. the caster rod won't line up because the front of the car is pushed back an inch under the body work Sad

So this is a good news bad news story. The bad news is that this is the end of my sedan... I have some dodgey diy fixes coming soon but will be selling it off. Because I got it so cheap I should get back most of what I paid as is.

The good news is that I have recently found quite a few really clean Civic's around that I'm looking at buying soon depending on condition etc. Will either be an immaculate clone version of my current sedan or a silver, le mer or maroon manual 1991 ed. The examples I'm looking at are very clean and well looked after so it should be relatively happy ending when I pick one up. The bright side is that I otherwise probably wouldn't have looked for a better kept manual sedan had I not destroyed this one.

It's a shame really, but shit happens I guess.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Well that really sucks Dude but the most important thing is that you were unharmed a car can be replaced.  I hope you can get her in good enough shap to get your money out of her and good luck on your search for another.
4dred6

That sucks man
nanotech

I'm very close to pulling the trigger on a near mint condition 1991 silver manual sedan with factory alloys. It's interstate so I'm having some friends look at it for me and get back to me.

If it's as good as the seller makes it out to be and the photo's I've request of specific parts are anything to go by, this is one well kept car. Oh and it's freakin cheap too Very Happy

So the silver lining to all this is that the wreck has given me motivation to buy a better car and do it properly.

I'll keep you guys posted but for now I'll share some photo's of the car I'm going to buy.

I have photos of engine, door jambs etc... Seems crazy clean for the price. FYI, this car is $1800 with road worthy and registration paid. Other cars I've seen in this condition with both rego and a rwc are around $3000!!!
nanotech

oh wait, this is the one with hub caps not alloys lol
HondaJunkie

I like that fabric pattern on the seats looks good.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Looks like a nice car for a great price.  How many miles/km?
Is there a clear plastic bug shield on the front?
4dred6

Shocked  clean

Can't wait to see what you have in store for it!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Super clean.
nanotech

I haven't updated in ages! Sorry guys. Been stalking rather than posting  Laughing

Ok!!! I have some news  Very Happy

I just put down a big deposit on a new sedan (the minty one I posted above ^^ ) and I'm organising a flight for the 30th of this month (fortnight) to pick it up and drive it back home.
I contacted the seller via phone and email, have heaps of pics of it sent to me and talked about it a lot over the phone and as luck would have it, some friends (one being a mechanic) happened to be up in the area and checked the car out in person for me.

Turns out this thing is legit. It's very VERY clean sedan and is in near immaculate condition. Dying to pick it up and hoping time will pass quickly.

In other news, I've organised a dodgey fix for the broken sedan and it will be going back to it's last owner who will most likely never drive it again anyway. So no money really lose.

This might shock some of you, but I sold the SSR Formula mesh this week. Sold before they even arrived actually. They are still on a truck heading to my city, they had to drive through several states to get here.
Disappointing I know but I decided that a new Civic means a new direction and a new beginning. I'm now on the hunt for some 15x7 +35 TE-37's, some Watanabe F8's in 14x6.5 +35, or some Desmond Regamasters.
I bought a set of stop gap wheels for the time being though. They are Blackracing 3 piece wheels, a Japanese knock off of Watanabe/SSR RS8 wheels

Plan will be to do a bit of a resto on the wheels. I want to take them apart and respray the lips and centres gloss black and polish up all the bolts. This way they will be completely black with only the 3pc bolt heads visible  Cool  Ugly wheels I know, but something to rep until I find what I'm looking for. Oh and for $50 a set? Who's complaining.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice to hear you found a clean sedan to buy man and the wheels should look ok after being cleaned up.
nanotech

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Booked a taxi to the bus station which will then take me to the airport and then I will land and get on a subway tram that will take me to the train station and get on a train to a car waiting to pick me up who will be driving me back to his house where I will meet my new car Very Happy
LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG Sentence yes.

Wish me luck guys! I'll be taking lots of pics and cannot wait to get this adventure over and done with and arrive home with my clean ED

Lol nothing! It's staying on this site haha.

I just meant that I originally posted this thread in the wrong section of the forum, this is the intro part not the build section.

So I started a fresh build thread for the new car in the correct section of EFCivicSedan.com!

Here! http://efcivicsedan.myfreeforum.org/sutra52305.php#52305

Enjoy  Cool
