h22tcb7: 1988 civic sedan build

Hello everyone. Im to the ef world. I got the ef for a dd/gas saver. Just bought it last night for $550. 1988 with 271k miles Runs pretty good. Smokes a little bit so Im thinking either the valve seals are going bad or the rings. One of the 2.

Its a pretty nice car for what I paid for the car. Im really happy with it so thats all that matters to me haha. Need some body work too.

I will get pics up of it when it stops raining outside.

My plans are to do a b16 swap on it. Would like to get the 90-91 front end. A nice set of springs and struts.

Im still doing alot of reading on what everyone is doing and what I want to do to mine. Still have a few unanswered questions but im still new to the site so im not going to ask something that im sure that on here somewhere.

Im located in Roanoke VA.

Thanks and Hoping to meet some good people and get alot of info from this site  : Very Happy
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Welcome!  I think there's one or two other guys on here from Roanoke.  I used to live in the 804.  What color is the sedan?  Looking forward to seeing the pictures.
h22tcb7

Awesome thats cool. Im not sure what the real name is but its light blue. Its also got the custom faded hood and top haha. Will get a new paint job when all the body work is done
h22tcb7

It stopped raining after 2 days straight. I got to take some pics today.

Here it is. Going to be fun after I get the b16 swap in and start to work on the body and get it all painted up and looking good

Here is just a few. I took alot today so I can have them for a start in my log. Here is a link to them all. There is a few in there with my cousins 86 crx

EF Sedan Enthusiast

That's a nice sedan to build from.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Welcome thats a nice starter car for $550.
h22tcb7

Thanks. Cant wait to start the b16 swap...

Here is my not so big first problem. My low beams would turn on when I would turn on my parking lights. Someone had cut all the wires and twisted them together for some odd reason. I will be soldering them and heat shrinking them back together.

89ef2

Welcome.... car looks nice
h22tcb7

Thanks everyone. I got all the wires fixed now. I feel alot better now that they arent all twisted up.

h22tcb7

Got some more pics. Did a little body work over the weekend and got me a new hood and truck too.

Yeah, what he said.
h22tcb7

Thanks guys. I just got a 90-91 front and rear bumper to put on yesterday. I need to get headlights and I should be done with the body. Then I will be getting a b16 swap, suspension and some rims and tires then be done. Wish I could find a black dash and door panels. Really want a cluster with a tach as well..
h22tcb7

Here is a little update. I have posted in here in a while. The weather has either been cold and windy or raining and windy so I havnet been able to do much haha. We got one really nice day few days ago. I got the driver side pass door done along with the bumper filler. I also got a new set of head lights. Here are the pics.

here are the headlights. I really didnt like the chrome so much and its not the look im going for. I really like the black out look so I black housed them

from this

to this

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Cool cool.  Have you scene any other sedans around your area?
h22tcb7

Not really. Im not really into going out and in the honda scene that much haha. Maybe after this gets done ill meet a few people with some. Ive only seen a few around town and they are all lowered with rims and a fart can so im sure they have nothing done. And they look like poop not clean at all haha
h22tcb7

3 month update

Hello everyone. It's been awhile since I posted in here. My hard drive on my computer
decided that it didn't want to work any more so I wasn't able to get on for a few weeks.
Since then I have changed up the interior from blue to a black/grey color. Sorry no pics
of that yet. I still gotta get front seats and my rear ones recovered. Also still gotta find
some carpet that isn't all messed up. I got an integra console as well. I have a pic on what
the shifter cover looks like at the bottom. I got all the body work done too. Just need
a new front bumper and it will be ready for paint. I'm going to paint it Dark Shadow Gray
from the 03 mustang. I also took all the mouldings off the car. The ones that was on it
was all bent up and I didn't fell like spending the money on new mouldings and I couldn't
really find any. I think it turned out really good. Its a complete different look.
I wanted mine to be different from everyone else. Well here are some pics of it and
whats done to this date. Hope everyone likes it. Leave feedback on if you do or don't. Don't
bother me either way.

I added rear bumper lights. I thought about it for a good few weeks before I started
cut up the bumper. I really like the way it turned out. Looks really good at night.

Shifter cover. Red carbon fiber with a white and black civic sticker. Black with red stitching
shift boot

Sancho

Looking good! How much longer till you do the B16 swap?
h22tcb7

Um hoping not to long. Would really like to start driving it soon. Just need to find a job and I would be good haha
Sancho

Haha you and I both! I just keep spending money Twisted Evil
h22tcb7

Me too. Its hard to save money when I need so much haha.

I plan on doing a mild build on the b16. Put the c/r at 9.0:1 and put a jackson racing s/c on it with like 10psi. should be right around 250hp with a good tune. But ill see how that plans out after I get the swap and drive it for a while.

I still need to get rims, front brake upgrade, got the rear disc swap and a rear sway bar just need to go pick it up. Gotta get my suspension also. Still trying to find a good set of side skirts to go with. Any ideas?
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Nice, what an update.
h22tcb7

Thanks

Hope to get a new front bumper soon. Just ordered some fender lights. After I get the bumper I can paint it but kinda wanna do my swap and all my other stuff first so I dont hurt the paint.
Sancho

wagovan side skirts work, and I can't remember what generation but accords work aswell(iirc).
Dolie ED3

What kinda rear bumper runninglights you used in the rear bumper?looks really cool!and cooler at night.nice Smile

I got them from a accord 94-97. They are also on the bb6 preludes.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Want me to move this to the project log section?
h22tcb7

Sure that sounds good. Haha this was just going to be a intro for the but then kinda turned into a build thread.

Thanks
h22tcb7

Another update but no pics   Sad  not yet at least. I painted the tops of the doors back to a stain black and did the mirrors in the same color. I also took off the fenders and bumper to clean in behind them to get ready for paint.

The color has been settled to a dark charcoal gray. Its a custom mixed color my dad did with some extra paint he had around from some of the jobs he did. It started out as a black, then added some gold, then some silver, then a black with some blue flakes in it. It looks pretty good. Cant wait to see what it looks like on the car painted.

I ordered me some fender lights off ebay. They should be here in the next few weeks. After I get those and a front bumper I think me and my dad are going to paint it. But I kinda want to wait until I do the swap and everything else so I dont mess up the paint.

Still on my list to get is:
integra front seats
rear seats recovered
carpet
front bumper
front lip
side skirts
suspension
da front brakes
cluster with a tach
rims and tires
rear disc brake swap
rear sway bar
b16 swap
front and rear upper strut bars

I think thats about it haha.
h22tcb7

here are some pics as of now. Pretty much ready to paint it now. Last thing I need is front bumper front lip and side skirts then ill be good with the body work  Shocked!!

Also got my fender lights in the mail today and didnt wast any time in getting them in. Just gotta wire them up and they are done.

h22tcb7

heres is an update. I put in an integra console and welded a bracket to be able to bolt it down useing the factor bolts.

h22tcb7

Well the b16 swap has been put on a hold for a little bit. I have a chance to scoop up alot better deal. Im not going to tell everyone yet will just have to wait and see Smile
89 LX SOHC ZC

Dam it!!
Sancho

Lots of progress! You should get this moved to the build thread section. I can't wait to hear the update.
h22tcb7

Ok well heres the update. Everything went the way I wanted/needed it too haha. So heres a teaser pic see if anyone can pick it out

JDMric1

nice sedan! i like the rear bumper lights

Thanks. I like how they turned out as well. It took me 3 weeks to make up my mind that I wanted to put them on. Really sets the rear end off

Yes please that would be fine. You can change the title too h22tcb7: 1988 civic build
h22tcb7

No one wants to take a guess at what the motor is?
EF Sedan Enthusiast

What is it?
h22tcb7

its a b18c with a jackson racing supercharger  Laughing ... I got a super deal on it. Its in a crx right now. Going to pull the full swap, suspension, sway bars, and the rims and tires and put on my civic. Got the whole car for 4600 and my brother is going to buy the shell for 1500 so Im getting just about everything I need for my civic for 3100...Plus a bigger motor and a supercharger haha

more pics..

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Shocked  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked  Shocked

That's a pretty good deal.  What are the suspension and wheels?
Sancho

Very sweet! That's g6nna be f4n

Its got kyb agx's with h&r springs. Rims are rota slips. Im only going to use the rims till I can save up the money for the rims that I want to put on. here is a pic of the crx we got. I kinda feel bad about taking it apart but oh well haha

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Would you sell that front bumper?  If so, shoot me a PM.  That CRX is nice.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Thats a sweet crx i would feel real bad doing that to the crx good luck with youre swap.
h22tcb7

EF Sedan Enthusiast wrote:

The front bumper on the rex? No its not for sale. Its my brothers shell im just taking the guts out of it haha. Hes going to do coilovers and do a h22 swap in it so it worked out great for the both of us. He gets a really nice crx with the jdm front like he wanted to do to his rex that he has now for half the price
Sancho

Damn dude that's clean! I would worry about a motor like that having the piss beat out of it. Either way I'd say it's a good buy though.
h22tcb7

Sancho wrote:

Yeah its in the back of my mind but they guy that I got it from knew what he was doing and it runs great. It starts up with a flik of the key. There is really no lag on waiting for it to start. Plus it made a 5 hour road trip from baltimore to roanoke with out any problems at all.

It is tuned really well.
Sancho

Sweet. If I was in your position I would just keep the rex the way it is... It's so clean, but that's just me. Do you know how much power it put to the wheels?
h22tcb7

Sancho wrote:

I have a 9 year old son and rex it to small for me for a daily driver. If it wasnt for that then I would.

Im not sure on the power but the guy I bought it from said he thinks its like 320-325
h22tcb7

So after about an hour and half I stopped at this. I will finish this weekend and start to clean up the bay and get ready to paint it.

h22tcb7

Got the motor out today. Going to start to clean up the engine bay and prep it for paint.

Shouldnt be long untill the b18c finds its new home in my civic  Twisted Evil
h22tcb7

h22tcb7

So I think that im going to wire tuck the engine bay. There is a guy that make a harness for a tuck and im going to get it from him and have him do the obd1 conversion for me in the harness. All ill have to do is the headlight harness and ill be tucked haha...
h22tcb7

got me a cluster with a tach finally

h22tcb7

Here is a little update. I got the driver side wire tuck
done. Wasnt as bad as I thought it would be.

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good stuff.  Want me to move this to the project/build section?
89 LX SOHC ZC

I want to do a tuck but I drve the car daily so I dont want to start it and not be able to finish it but youres looks good keep up the good work.
h22tcb7

Got 20sum holes welded up today. Just need to get a few more done and put down some bondo and smooth it all out then will be ready for paint and swap in the motor
h22tcb7

Thanks. The tuck wasnt as bad as I thought that it would be. Just a few wires that really needed to be extended and loomed them all up
h22tcb7

Bond

The shave is all about time and detail but so worth it in the end. Looks like your well on your way to getting the bay shaved. Try and weld shut the larger holes as the bondo will sag over time. Keep up the good work!
Proper282

I would try and weld ALL the holes if possible. Then skim the whole thing with filler and smooth it out. Good work bro. I want to do a wire tuck but need my car as a daily so I'm afraid to try and tackle it on a weekend.   Mad

Seeing the blue chasis with the greenish filler reminds me of when Clipse went balls out on his engine bay lol!

Looking forward to the results!
h22tcb7

Yeah every where you see bondo is where i welded up the hols. Just got to weld up a few more big ones and im done with it. Not looking to do a full shave of all of them but just a few to make it look cleaner
h22tcb7

I got the T-bar done and painted. Still working on all the other spots

~Sp33~

That looks neat!
h22tcb7

well here it is. all I need to do is smooth out a few scratches to make it all smooth and put some seam sealer on it. Than ill have to get some good primer on it and paint it.

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Looking good!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice!
h22tcb7

got this in the mail today. All I need now is my da knuckles and I can get the suspension bolted up.

h22tcb7

Got the paint for the bay today. Going to try and get it painted this weekend if not will be doing it next weekend.

89ef2

id be interested in seeing how well the paint lays out and the finish product looks like..... good luck
h22tcb7

89ef2 wrote:

I am too haha.. If all my prep work is good then it should be fine. If it dont look to good then I dont know what im going to do lol
89 LX SOHC ZC

Ive heard that paint works well. Good luck.
h22tcb7

Got the coolant holder for the supercharger cooler mounted today. Still need to primer and paint the bay. Been raining everyday for the past week so cant paint after it rains.

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good stuff
89ef2

If the paint comes out decent enough I wouldnt mind painting my car wirh that product... Ive done and perfected my body work skills but have never painted a car before.... Never trusted my self with mixing all the chemicals correctly
h22tcb7

89ef2 wrote:

Haha the mixing part is the easiest part. All you have to get is one of the cups they have and mix it like it says on the paint. If it says 4:1:1 that you find that on the cup and fill it to the marks on the cup.

Best way to practice painting with a gun is to get one and put water in it. It works pretty well and gives you a good idea on how to paint. Its not as thick as paint but it works.
alarm guru

do a gsr or ls or type r cluster bro, you wont regret it and ill help anyway i can with anything electrical. trust me man i know these cars electrically in and out. not just efs but anything to 2000 maybe more

haha I thought about doing that but I would have had to get the other dash and I like the way mine looks. Plus the stock ef cluster dont look to bad and I dont mind it at all. It does the job for me. No need to change it out.
h22tcb7

Got the seam sealer done today. Came out great. If the weather play's out I will get the engine bay primed and sanded down ready for paint it.

h22tcb7

Got it half way primed today. This is the first step in priming that im going to do. This is a high build primer to fill in any scratches that might have been there in the bondo and from were I had sanded down the rest of the bay. All that is left is to sand that down to smooth it out. Then lay down all the other paint. Will be doing all that next Saturday.

I also got the rear suspension off.

Sancho

The bay's coming along nicely. Who makes the seam sealer?
h22tcb7

Sancho wrote:

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Looking good.
h22tcb7

Well I didn't get the bay painted this weekend. Mother nature did let me. It was damp and cool on Saturday and my dad had to work today. But I did get the fender wells done. I got some undercoating made by dupli color and it seems to work good. I like the look of it. Just hope that it holds up nicely.

Sancho

When I saw that you updated the thread I was hoping to see the painted bay. Next weekend?
h22tcb7

Sancho wrote:

Haha sorry  Sad .. I told my dad that if he gets a nice day this week and hes off work to just go ahead and paint it. I wanted to learn how to paint a candy coat but at this point I dont really care lol. Im hoping he will be doing it one day this week and ill have pics then.
h22tcb7

I got me a 1" brake booster and master cylinder the other day.

I think im just going to get the fastbrakes front brake upgrade with the 11" rotors instead of getting the da knuckles. Just seems to be cheaper and easier in the long run.

I will. Im sure they will be really stiff for the first few months then after that it shouldnt be to bad.
h22tcb7

Well got this in the mail today. Getting closer to putting it down on the ground.

h22tcb7

Inside of my calipers Smile

h22tcb7

Got these today. Always love when parts come in.

h22tcb7

Here is what im doing with my calipers. This is one of the rears that i finished.
