Expecting too much - An ED3 Piece Of Crap

I picked up my car from interstate today. I got up early this morning, caught a plane for a 1.5 hour flight, got a cab from the airport to the car, and drove it 8ish hours home. I had already payed a $500 deposit and was in the middle of nowhere with this POS car. I could've walked away and bought a flight home, meaning the ordeal would've only cost me about $1000 instead of $3500 (flight, cab ride, fuel etc)

Anyway, here is the POS

For what i payed, i was expecting a pretty damn straight car. Probably an 8/10. but what i had just bought was more like a 3/10.
This is a video the seller sent me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i...Btn5I&feature=player_embedded

He didn't point out the rust, lack of spare wheel (and i was just about to drive it 8 hours home!) or the multiple accident damages. I thought i was buying a much nicer car than what I was.

So now i'm thinking about what i should do with it. The bodywork really sucks and i don't want to fix it. Mechanically it's pretty good, the engine feels very strong and the A/C is awesome. There wasn't any clunks or rattles from underneath the whole way home so that's good.

I don't owe any money or anything, i just feel like I've wasted a heap of it. So that's good, i guess.

Mad  Smile
4dred6

Is not that bad, I like it. That's what clean ones go for around here ($3000 US). And consider it clean.
89ef2

I agree... cars here that have problems and are junk people still want 2500... all in all isn't a bad start
HondaJunkie

Thats a good looking sedan I would be happy with that. I think with some elbow grease it will be looking great.
Jace

thanks guys. i suppose you're right, but here this thing is worth about $1000 as it is.

I have South Australian rego until May 15th, so i need to fix the rust and get a new windscreen (at least) before then if i decide to get it re-registered here (Victoria)

I ripped out the interior today and cleaned it. the carpet is fucked so that needs replacing, the drivers seat is a bit hammered so i'd like to replace that, but otherwise it's okay i guess. It still smells like 23 years of smoking and spilt food and drink but with new carpet and a steam clean of the seats i think it'll be a lot better.

I was very depressed about it last night but your opinions and a good nights sleep have helped me to think more of the car.

I'll put up some more photos tomorrow night.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

It's shame people can't be more forthcoming with information when selling a used auto.  However it always makes me happy when someone saves these sedans from the scrap heap  Very Happy  Looking forward to watching this build.
jmanwantsboost

I bought a sedan that was very clean, but had a ton of drivetrain issues I'm still sorting out. But I fell in love with my hateful beast of burden. lol. Doesn't look to be awfully bad. I know how far a good steam clean goes Wink
jon_akers

Too bad its a 90-91, or I would offer to buy it off ya! I want a rhd sedan next. Should be easy to get an 88 shipped over.
Jace

chyeah there's better ones to buy man.

well today i went to the wreckers to get two corner indicators, a LHS headlight and some speaker covers. I forgot to get a flap for the clock buttons and didn't find a horn button though.

this is why i needed speaker covers
clearanced with a hammer obviously (and yes that's electrical tape)

other pictures of all the magical things i love about this car (<-sarcasm)
totally rooted carpet, idk how carpet even gets this worn? (3 big holes)(floor mat was glued down)

beautifully detailed engine bay

my 1975 BMW 2002 is less rusty than this POS

and a pic of my office (the most important bit)

i need to tidy up some wiring and 'adjust' the front left corner of the car.

Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Confused
zacattack

Wow. Looks like it needs some work but not too bad. Hope you decide to keep it. At least it is in good hands now.
Jace

i threw on some old wheels i had lying around, with RE001's for added overkill.

zacattack

Looking better alreeady.
~Sp33~

Oh man, sorry to hear that. I've flown interstate several times for cars and the only time i was disappointing was with my civic (all the other times were friends cars, and they were always nice, SOB's). I used it as massive leverage though, and got it for pretty cheap.

Did you end up pick up the headlight? I believe i've got one here in QLD if you can't find one. Let me know if you can't find something i'll keep an eye out up here.

i'd already payed a deposit and i had a bank cheque made out, so i had pretty much fucked myself, couldn't really negotiate much. Sad

thanks man but yeah i hit up the wreckers and got most of the bits i needed.

the whole front/left corner is hammered. the fender in particular probably needs replacement.

dodgy wiring, not sure why it was altered... also my engine bay has ants for some reason Confused

i was excited about the rain, probably the first and only photo of this car that i'll host on flickr lol

CivicEXC by Jace B., on Flickr
~Sp33~

That imported (plastic) headlight requires a H4H bulb i'm pretty sure, while the AUDM 90-91 headlight uses a H4. Try swapping your drivers side bulb to the passengers side and see if the plug clips on.

I might be wrong it's been a while since i moved the headlights around, but that could be why the wiring has been modified.
Jace

the bulb that was in the plastic headlight was a different size but same plug fitment aka the wiring probably never needed to be modified.

unless the headlight was ripped out of it's place taking the plug with it by some miracle. idk.
anyway i bought a pair of new bulbs, both the same, and all is well. my drives to work at 6am are much less dangerous now.

i need to get this thing inspected for a RWC before i go replacing bits and pieces.
Mattes

why does this ED3 has a D14A1 built in? D14A1 was only in ED2 and ED3 had a D15...or is it different in Australia?
Sad about this car... Sad

it's a d15 man, what makes you say d14?

PS the wheels are SSR EX-C Mesh 14x6.5 +19, i have complete center caps for them but i need smaller wheel nuts to fit them.

double carburator...hmm... I think it's different to european sold ed's... Wink

Aussie ED3's are twin carby too Mattes, but 1.5

Ugly tail lights, everyone knows that!  Razz
Jace

the 90/91 rear garnish is literally the main selling point for me with these cars!!!

same with proper GX/JZX81's, Peugeot 205's and lots more!
Jace

thanks guys. i've been driving it flat out and i'm liking it. needs a tune up and i should probably service everything but meh!

Anything new?

just saw this, hey dude!

other than it overheating very regularly, nothing really. i've bought a new thermostat but seeing how buried it is under millions of hoses i have lost all motivation to replace it haha.

it overheats but gets no heat through the cabin heater. i haven't tried 'burping' it yet but i figured for $19 i could get a new t'stat and see how that goes.

i might work on it tomorrow. maybe.
~Sp33~

It's not nearly as hard as it looks. Most of those hoses don't get in your way.

Check to see if your heater core hasn't been bypassed for some reason. Also check to see that the temp gauge sender (single wire, between the trans and the distributor, poking out of the head) and the temp sensor (back of the block) are connected properly. If they're loose your gauge can read funky.

Do you think it's actually overheating? No heat in the cabin is weird.

Start the car and let it idle, do the rad fans cycle on and off once it's reached operating temperature? Does the gauge read 2/3rds when the fans start cycling?

Are you losing coolant? Any signs of seepage from the waterpump (timing belt side of the motor at the rear) Look for signs of dried coolant (white stains)

Some free things to check!
4dred6

Let's hope is not the HG
Jace

thanks steve!

it's definitely overheating. i'm not sure of the coolant circulation so i wasn't sure where the heater inlet comes from.

i semi hope it is the headgasket so i can send the car to the wreckers and forget about it haha.

i have other projects that are infinitely more interesting to me than this POS. i'd definitely buy another ED but only one in much nice condition that has actually been looked after.
FlatTireRacer

You can send it to me! I'll give it a good home!  Wink

because RHD? fuark you guys are almost too keen!

well i replaced the thermostat and wouldn't mind getting the vacuum lines into the right order. they have been mucked about with and half of them weren't connected.

the engine didn't like idling when cold. if anybody has a vacuum diagram for a D15 twin carb that would be awesome. this would have to me the most complex twin carb system ever.

besides the vacuum lines and intake assembly, it's good to go.

Did that fix the overheating problem?

Look at the firewall, there's only one place where coolant passes through the firewall, if the hoses come out of the firewall and connect to the block, the heater should be ok. I think the heater tap should be to the right of the brake booster (if you're looking at the car it's the back left side of the bay).

PM me your email address, and i can send you some vacuum schematics to help you out with the carbies. Or post some pictures of the ones that are disconnected and i can suss out where they should be connected to.
Jace

you're a legend Steve, thanks heaps!

i'll get it back together tomorrow arvo and post up.
Jace

well now that we're back to standard time i run out of light pretty quickly and i'm working on the civic away from the house/garage so no power for lighting.

anyway, this silly little sensor which i imagine did fuck all even when it was working properly has slowed me down a bit

it had been 'repaired' (and i use that term loosely) before and had since snapped in two. i tried gluing it back together but i have now just blocked off the open end and will just have four of the vacuum lines combining in the dodgy green thing.

thanks for the manual Steve, but is seemed to be different, and not just in the RHD/LHD sense.
~Sp33~

I sent you another email man, this one seems to have that piece in the vacuum diagram.
jon_akers

You have found the most interesting part in the world.
89CivicSi

^^ indeed, where did u find that on ur motor?
Jace

under the coolant inlet from the heater on the intake manifold

according to the manual-pdf Steve so awesomely sent me, it's a
primary slow mixture cut off solenoid valve
~Sp33~

jon_akers wrote:

Hahah, that's the overstatement of the century.
89CivicSi

off what so called motor? that's a first iv ever seen one.
~Sp33~

d15b4
cleanRENO90

looks like a thermal vacuum switch.
Jace

basically yeah.

well the car is still playing funny buggers, gets smelly hot before it can pump heat through the heater, thermo fans work but do very little.

i cant even be bothered so off to ebay it can go.
~Sp33~

Shame dude.

Is the gauge actually reading hot? If the fans are cycling on and off and your heater isn't blowing hot then i think your gauge might be faulty.

If it's actually overheating as well, it'll bypass a bunch of coolant out the overflow bottle (so you'll see it steaming and blowing coolant everywhere)
Jace

the way the temp gauge hits it's max even when it has 10˚C air smashing into the radiator suggests it's reading incorrectly, but it also seems to work correctly sometimes.

does the same temp sensor trigger the fans?

eh i'll have another look on the weekend.

Nope, the sensor for the gauge is under the distributor, the fan switch is on the back of the block next to the oil presure sensor.

All she needed was some love man. I see a smile on that face already! She may have been a little shabby in some areas but look at her now and how she's coming along. I love to see it actually start from the bottom. Shows inspiration and really helps others get motivated in many instances. Keep it up and trust me you will fall madly in love with her.  Very Happy
Jace

love? shit no. you're keen! haha

i have infinitely more interesting and rewarding things to fiddle with

BBS by Jace B., on Flickr

civic has been hanging in there. i'm ignoring cooling issues and continuing to daily drive it for at least another 3 weeks. found an awesome jump for it too!

Jace wrote:

Are we talking about jumping the sedan here oh and remember if you do get video! Laughing
Jace

haha i definitely would!

well this car might be dead.

http://instagram.com/p/YcVlDCNJwr/

i was on the highway last night and the temp gauge was sitting way high but i chose to ignore it, not really caring if it blows the headgasket or whatever.

well, turns out 'whatever' happened. can't see shit in the engine bay so idk exactly, but oil was spilt and the starter motor either doesn't engage the flywheel, or engages a flywheel that's not really connected to anything. hugh cloud of oil-smoke followed me into the service station (gas station) where i ended up (^see above)

so i had my friend josh (with the mint ED) come and pick me up and he helped me continue on my journey to pick up and ebay win. got home at about 12am and decided i should go back and take the good wheels off the civic in case they got stolen (unlikely) so we loaded up his car with 4 stockies and a jack/wheel brace and headed back out there.

so now i'm wondering if i should tow it back to geelong and see if it's actually fixable, or just have a wreckers pick it up from where it sits haha.
HondaJunkie

That really sucks man sorry to hear I would tow it back and either fix it or try and part it out but whatever you decide best of luck bud.
4dred6

Probably shouldn't be asking that question in this forum.  Of course I
would go get that baby and tow it back home. Don't give up so easy
I mean I know it's been giving nothing but trouble but please save that
Sedan frm the wreckers..
jmanwantsboost

swap in a fuel injected motor and make it run proper Smile my car has been an equal PITA. i had it for a month before the tranny blew because the PO put a tranny in and ran it dry. i had no idea till it blew haha. then the one i swapped in has no fourth gear. you can shift it but you get nothing but neutral. these things seem to fight us but i love mine Smile
jon_akers

Give it to me and pay half the shipping.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Shit, I'll give you $100.00 USD, pay & arrange shipping (FOB terms).
~Sp33~

Dammn dude Sad

you american guys are mental!!

still haven't brought it home. i think it's probably quite safe there but ya never know. i might rent a trailer and bring it back tomorrow.

a awd wagon would be pretty cool
EF4lyf3

it would be way more than cool out here Cool
4dred6

Not bad
HondaJunkie

I would totally take that wagon for $400 o my gerd Mad  If I could find a clean one out here I would snag that thing up so quickly, I also want a 89 civic si  to which is proving impossible.
Jace

it's only the 3rd EF wagon, and first 4x4 one i've seen in the country!

we never got these, i believe they are all private imports. i fear getting a window or anything specific and necessary for one would be a pain in the ass but i think it'd be well worth it!

i'm waiting on more pics and i'll have a chat with the current owner. i'm looking into leasing shed space so i can store my shit. i have 3 cars and not including stockies 3xsets of wheels, a big tub of spares for each car, detailing stuff, tools etc and i barely have enough room for it as it is! if i can lease a place then i can buy another car or two.

lol, My friends own three. They were sold here from 88 to 89 and discontinued before the facelift models came out.

It's nothing special bud! One pops up on ebay every couple of weeks, that ones been on there for a while now!

I picked up one from S.A. a couple of years back!
Jace

all 4x4 ones? does he wanna sell one? lol

i still want one. i think it'd get me motivated to make a proper apocalypse-ready vehicle. roof basket, bullbar, soft-roading tires etc.
