DX to Lx ClusterWaz up all? I just had a quick question,
im swaping out my 88 DX cluster for An 88 LX Cluster (lol didnt want to put in an gawdy monster after market tach ) so the tach part of the LX should work when i put it in my dx?
~ I couldnt find a Si Cluster to save my life in the junk yard i went to lol so i thought the LX cluster would be the next best thing

the lx cluster will work perfectly. Just keep in mind that 88-89 is different from 90-91. just in case you forgot

LOL thanks I was just wondering cuz I know how honda likes to get creative lol cuz the yard had 2 Lx's (they had alot lol) both 88's and both auto and one had the tach plus gear indicator and the one i bought was minus the gear indicator with tach... i just find it funny that why would you need a tach in a auto lol

I'm guessing the redline would be different, and the LX cluster would be more available.

~Sp33~ is right the red line starts At round about 65K for the Si custers
The USDM 88/89 SI/LX clusters are almost Identical except the Redlines because for some reason Most LX's were autos and some came with the gear Indicators in the cluster...
The 91-92 Crx/hatch SI clusters got the real changes its slightly different in shape and the warning gauges you get 10 of them instead of 8 like the 88-89 SI's and or LX
its even got an empty slot in it that you could use for a shift light or noS indcator lol
Its a cool mod, I did mine today as I was installing my alarm. I even got it to match my civics current mileage! So Dose that make my DX an LX now lol
i might have to do a write up or something

did you just plug in the whole guage cluster? why didnt you detach just the tach to match your car instead of the whole thing with speedometer.

Its easier to replace the entire cluster and if you get the same years as your car they plug right in.

ThurmanMerman is right match the years when swapping them out less of a PITA that way!
but then you end up with the completely wrong mileage for your car... the donor car my LX cluster was from read 321,581 miles! yikes!!! my car only has 144k on it right now(135k when i bought it)
So im a lil anal retentive about lil things like that so I just swapped out the mechanical parts for the speedometer takes like 15mins to swap out the necessary parts... or i could have just did the rubix cube or power drill trick... lol both are time consuming

lol yea it only takes 15 mins to do so but thats only that part of the install tho!
heres a real quick write up:
Note: make sure your new cluster is from the same year as you current one makes everything 100000000000 times simpler... as to the clusters/wiring are different for the 88-89 and 90-91 EF models...
Step 1:
Okay Once you have the Lx (or Si) Cluster You need to remove the the clear plastic covering on the front to access the front of the gauge.
Step 2:
Now once that is removed, Gently (and I do mean gently) grasp the speedometer needle and pull it off. make sure to work it slowly straight up as not to bend or break the needle.
Step 3:
Now that the needle has been removed there are 2 black screws holding the face plate on remove them and remove the face. the speedo side is separate from the Tach and other gauges.
Step 4:
Flip the entire cluster over and remove the screws that are around where the speedometer cable goes in the the back. once thats done push down on the connector for the speedometer cable and that should push it through and the you can remove the unit.
bamn now you cluster should have a big empty spot where the speedometer used to be and your tach and other gauges should be left untouched set it down go smoke or get a tasty cold beverage your going to need it!
(that was the easy part here comes the pain!!!!)
Step 5:
(Note: IF you LOVE your EF Your going to want to do this part REALLLLLLLY CAREFULY!)
Inside your EF first your going to have to remove the black bezel from around the stock DX cluster. there's 2 screws at the top and 5 in various spots along the bottom. Be careful because doing this, your center vents and clock (if you have the stock one) are connected to it and can easily snap. so leave the clock connected and just twist the bezel to the passenger side. Next there is 2 plastic square covers that you need top pry up (located top side behind the top cluster cover. remove the 2 screws from each hole. Next there are 4 little tabs that u have to beware of when removing this piece they are on the underside just in front of the top leading edge of the cluster... use a small screwdriver to pop them out... if you dont your break or crack this cover. Once you pop all 4 remove the cover and now you have access to the back of the cluster. Now there are 3 screws on each side of the cluster remove them. now you should be able to pull it forward but it wont come out trust me it wont...
Step 6:
To completely remove the cluster: first you must unplug the the 2 connector plugs on each side (a small screwdriver will help) next you must remove the Speedometer cable from the back its a big white connector (you cant miss it) a small screwdriver will help but i was able to remove it without it. Now pull your old ratty DX cluster out by tilting it forward... and bamn its out and ready to go!
Step 7:
Note: this is a good time to plug in your LX/Si cluster to make sure it works and and all the gauges (the tach temp gas and all the warring lights) work. you can start your car to test the tachometer and the gas/temp gauges with no problem. (but do so at your own risk...)
To remove your DX speedometer repeat steps 1-4. Now that you have your DX Speedo out Place it in the empty spot in the LX/Si cluster and reassemble the LX/Si cluster.
Step8:
ReInstall cluster is the reverse of taking it out. at this point I took my EF out for a short road test to make sure everything worked. put your dash back together and enjoy your new cluster!
(i assume no liability in anything that happens with your EF when following this write up and modifications you do is at your own risk) <----- just some legal stuff lol
Ive had mine in for about 4 months now and had not one problem with it! Ill try and find all my install pix so i can make an official write up
