d15y8 build

well iv been workin on a lil project, usin a d15b2 block and a y8 head. plans are to turbo once I get it all together and broke in. but usin stock rods and pistons(comp reasons), y8 mani ported and polished. my problem is I wanna go obd1 not obd2 and im getting all kinds of things tossed my way, like I need a b7 dizzy an I cant remember what timing belt to run it. but im all confused when it comes to mixing parts from other motors so if any have done a build like this a seen a write up that would help a lot. il be postin pics in a day or so of the progress.
stormdrop

good luck man.
89CivicSi

lol ya gonna need it from what I hear, but seen vids so I know its possible and puts out good power if tuned correctly
cleanRENO90

Now, are you going with stock internals for compression reasons, or cost reasons? because you can get any aftermarket internals in stock compression ratios.

now, I know its not my build, and I'm only offering some small advice.

Personally, I would go with a d16z6 head, Y8 manifold, and a d15b2 bottom end, and a good set of arp headstuds.
89CivicSi

kinda both but I have a good set of stock internals already so was just gonna change rings and bearings, and why would u say the z6 head over the y8?

From having both, the z6 head performs better, and swaps easier. Its very similar to the a6 head. The flow rates are comparable to the y8, and the main point of getting the y8, is just the bigger intake manifold.
cleanRENO90

You've also gotta think, there are 2 700+hp z6 based builds, and no y8 based builds.
89CivicSi

lol would the z6 head and dizzy be obd1? cuz at the moment im tryin to source all diff parts to make the y8 head obd1 from obd2
cleanRENO90

wikipedia is your best friend.

And yes, the z6 is already obd-1
89CivicSi

lol smartass Smile  and guess I gotta try and find someone to trade my y8 head and dizzy with, or just pick up yeat another head for my collection haha

check wrecking yards, you'll have a good chance of finding one there. I've got an extra p28 laying around, that I'd let go for mega cheap + shipping.
89CivicSi

Pm me with prices Smile an ya I'm gonna go see if the car I took the vc from is still there it was a z6 hopefully its not mollested an has everythin to it still
cleanRENO90

throw me an offer. I don't see myself needing it for a while, or ever for that matter. Whenever I end up building a car, its going to be an aem ecu.
89CivicSi

Lolol throw me a price
cleanRENO90

We can base price off of your preferred shipping method.

unless you't prefer a flat rate box?
89CivicSi

lol what would flat rate be to 71112?
89CivicSi

so found complete z6 head for 32$  Very Happy now just gotta wait till Monday to get it Sad
4dred6

Nice  Very Happy
89CivicSi

yup prices out here are nice, and its semi clean too Smile  so just gotta go pull it have it done over while I pull pistons and clean block up.
89CivicSi

ok well checked out cr ratio's d15z6 hails 10.22cr while d15y8 hails 10.65cr. not much of a diff, but the z6 gives more ptv clearance than the y8, so question is should I mill the head or just leave it as is to stray away from more tuning issues? also since z6 is obd1 all im gonna need is the dizzy, injectors and ecu right? well jumper harness too.
cleanRENO90

I would leave it alone. Honda designed the head for optimal performance. More ptv clearance means you can put a more aggressive cam in there.  Wink
89CivicSi

lol didn't think of that Confused  but was I right on parts list tho?
cleanRENO90

89CivicSi wrote:

yeah, your parts list is right. If you're converting to obd1 mpfi vtec, you can use all of the obd1 parts, z6 distributor, p28, and obd1 injectors. they'll fit in the y8 intake manifold no problem.

have you found a good write up to wire your car over to obd1 yet?
cleanRENO90

Don't forget a timing belt, water pump, head bolts, headgasket, and intake manifold gasket.
89CivicSi

Already ahead on that stuff I have mls hg,new water pump, timing belt, altenator belt, intake an exhuast gaskets. Just need the mechanical parts of it lol
cleanRENO90

have you looked into head studs?
89CivicSi

nope forgot bout thoses, these on the b2 were only 2months old from previous hg change, but I need to source the shorter bolt.
cleanRENO90

its always a good idea to go with head studs. my boosted z6 had arp's, a thicker cometic headgasket, and ran on 8lbs of boost.
89CivicSi

Lol I'm usin a y8 3layer hg, an maybe I'll look into arp's too.
89CivicSi

so decided since im waitin on new rings and bearings, id clean the block and polish it, yes polish lol plans are to paint it black chrome or anodized red-to blood red dependin on how many coats.

~Sp33~

Don't polish it, get it HPC'd or something, not worth the effort and you'll never get the finish even enough, or shiny enough for it to look any good.
89CivicSi

lol with the paint goin on its not gonna matter how shiny it is, its either gonna turn out black or red lol but im goin today to check out some vht engine enamel as well
jon_akers

I am gonna try to link a pic off facebook of a guy that did his block red. I think it looks bad.

If you paint it black it will be harder to tell when you have stuff leaking.

89CivicSi

lol that is true, that's a nice motor but way to much red, maybe il do a white and red
jon_akers

White would be killer, ;if you can keep it clean. lol dare to be different though.
89CivicSi

dare accepeted lol white block or red head or red block and white head? vc will be red and white do to I wanna make it look like the jdm rising sun
jon_akers

White block over red block.
89CivicSi

white block red head and rising sun vc
cleanRENO90

89CivicSi wrote:

Aluminum raw is better for heat dissipation for the head.
89CivicSi

bt vht paint is too tho
cleanRENO90

89CivicSi wrote:

the thermal paint isnt for dissipation, its to lower underhood temps by keeping the heat in.
89CivicSi

so u sayin no paint head
jon_akers

Hey do you have any other motors lying around that are decent? I need something to stuff into this std hatch...
89CivicSi

iv got my d15y8 im building than I have the si d16 in my sedan, im lookin for another block to start a bottle build.
jon_akers

I have a z6 block with pretty much everything except a good crank.
You interested in selling that other d16 when you pull it out?
89CivicSi

idk will hae to see when time comes to pull it, what happened to the crank?
jon_akers

When I bought the motor, the PO didn't tell me that it had spun a rod, its gouged more than the local machine shop would like it to be.
89CivicSi

Oh damn lol id be pissed
89CivicSi

I also in need of a ef header, the company id bought mine from sent me what looks like a eg chassis because it hangs so low, which hinders me from dropping car low like I want
tenkaracole

go to andysautosport.com and look 88-91 civic parts at Spec D headers, it should work and only $70  Very Happy
89CivicSi

oh look who decided to stop by lol an alright il go look
tenkaracole

good things are worth the wait Cool  Cool
89CivicSi

psh says who lol
tenkaracole

what you think of that header? Confused  it could work?
89CivicSi

don't have the money for it tho, its for my chassis just not my wallet lol
4dred6

89CivicSi wrote:

Lol I feel like this ^ all the time
89CivicSi

I just want the correct header, this is some bs lol, the test pipe fit perfectly haha
tenkaracole

Well then! Confused  I just wanted to see how it would work. and I can deffinettly understand not having money! Laughing
89CivicSi

well started again on my block today, measuring clearnces for bearings. and decided to play with zeal cr calculator.

ima need a major tune
89CivicSi

am now thinkin of some srp high cr pistons for it, any suggestions? I may turbo it, an if so will be professionally dyno tuned, yes big money but done right

Alright well decided im gonna scrap the b2/y8, and install it on my current a6 block pick up another d16 block and build it. so in mean times im gonna get the head cleaned and prepped for install, will be using stock pm6,a6 dizzy and injectors until I get my chipped pm6 with 2map crossover from a friend.
89CivicSi

Well got the lovely y8 head apart today Smile gonna finish cleaning her up maybe polish the ports, install new seals an clean all and any gunk in rocker assembly an vtec rocker. Pics to come shortly.
4dred6

89CivicSi

ya was told y8 head combined with pm6 pistons will be a lil peppy haha, gonna finish up the head tomorrow just gotta clean the valves and install new seals
89CivicSi

well started off with this

the rocker assembly

zip tied to not mix up any parts while cleaning and re-assembly

caps all clean, an no the wire brush I was using on vc lol

all cleaned lubed and coated to prevent rust forming
89CivicSi

got the head as clean as I think im gonna go(got tired off using lil tools for corners and tight spaces)

combustion chambers nice clean

this pic was before I smooth out an cleaned the sides of cc
4dred6

looks awesome man
89CivicSi

ya well fucked up an gotta get new valve seals Sad I thought I had put all the seats back, an well apparently I wasn't paying attention lol, so wasted em Sad
89CivicSi

well heres a lil update that some may know from IG. I went ahead and finished my project y8 block and head, and installed it over the weekend.

Prepped for retiring the A6

pulled the radiator and support

And shes out lol

Prepping new block for install, transferred over everything I needed

Lowered here in with trans attached(soo much easier lol)

The clean head

My son decided to sit on it an do the shocker symbol lol

Head and intake mani installed

Started to button her back up

All finished except battery and intake tube
89CivicSi

Havent been on here in quite some time, so figured id come back on say hi Smile Had some recent but not major changes so il share.

Ended up having to get a new windshield, becuase of some ass who doesnt know how to cover his trailer of rocks.

New windshield, an its so different being able to see no knicks or anything lol

Idk if i posted about my Vr6 lip and visors, but ya got those and found so mint bumper lights from a 91 awd wagon couple weeks ago, an i think they look good.

Also dunno if i posted but found mud flaps too
an yes i know i need more low but the uca is tapping the top.

Hahaha had some fun at work

Changed Vc color

Head is still really clean
jon_akers

I like the blue VC better than the hello kitty.
Is it you on CL with the A6 wanting to trade for wheels?
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good stuff dude!
BigDaddy_71

Where can I find the proper head bolts for the swap?

Thanks!
89CivicSi

89CivicSi

jon_akers

Man, it looks so good on the bottlecaps!
