D15 timing issueHey whats up everyone!
Okay First off i have to say I just LOVE CA's Smog Laws I think Japans has to be even better lol anyhoo I have to now stop "riding dirty" lol and get my baby smoged...
OKAY she passes all the emissions tests But the timing keeps flagging casing it to fail point blank... the first test said it was at about 35 degrees (I was like whoa!) and the smog guy was like it should be round about 18 degrees. So okay So I go to my boys shop to get it adjusted (at a minimal cost lol) but he informed me that he adjusted as far as he can and was wondering if the people whom owned it before me had changed the the timing belt cus the marks (i guess the on the timing belt side) were off or he couldn't see them...
So i take it back for my one "free retest" again she passes (barely now according to the smog guy) but Blam same shiznit the timing is down but not enough now its at 25 degrees...
the dizzy is adjusted as far as it will go... so im stumped as what to do next...

I actually have the same problem. Distributor adjusted as far as it will go and its still not right.

most likely timing belt is off a tooth, I've seen it a dozen times. Or you shaved your head/ decked your block and should be running an adjustable pulley

Yea after they adjusted mine as far as it would go i noticed at 35 degrees that motor was a slug on the freeway but at 25 degrees its a lot better but the trade of is now my high speed sprints on the freeway burns up a lot more gas lol

heheh i dont think the kid I picked my EF up from shaved the head/block... frankly i shoulda kicked him in the ass for the crappy tune up he gave it he left the oil filter hella loose and the spark plug wires he used were so crappy the first wire kept poping out after anything involving high rpm driving... (i amost took it back to him the first time it popped n threw a cel lol) But i cant complain to loudly though 600 bucks was a steal! i bet if hes seen what ive done to it and whats going to be done to it he'd probley want to buy it back lol
But back on topic That's what I was thinking as well, i was in the debate about going to my contact about having the smog "hooked up" but that costs the same as taking it and having a new timing belt/re-smog done...
I think that's I'll do time for a new timing belt!
even tho the new D16z6 will be here soon!

Thanks!!! yea i wanna get this D15 running right cuz my goal is to drop this motor in a Hatch or another EF so i have a second car or just to have a second spare motor
Your going Sohc Im guessing Your going D16z6? thats what im upgrading to and going full full 0B1 to alleviate smog issues in the future... i cant wait to see their faces when i roll in there with non carb'd turbo system lol "um sir that's not stock" lol

actually im going with the D15B vtec but converting it to obd1 and i want to get a hatch and get a k-series on that one. where in cali are u from?

koo are you going Jdm with the d15b? and the K-series Hatch sounds like its going to be a beast when you get it done! If i had the money I would love to put a k-motor in an EF but i bets its been done LOL
me im going with a d16z6 turbo, then i want to find a 88-91 real time 4 wheel drive wagon and a nd swap the drive train over over to my EF (making a sudo EF5 ) most wont know what hit them!
and im in t he central valley Sacramento to be more exact

Sounds like the belt is a tooth off like some of you have said....
This is what I would do.
First line up the cam gear with its specified marks.
Check and make sure that the crank mark is lined up at the bottom. You should be able to see (1) mark on the crank pulley lined up on the mark on the belt cover. If you see the (3) marks lined up, then the timing is off. Pull the timing belt off and line up the single mark from the pulley to the mark on the timing belt cover and put the belt back on.
Now check once again to make sure that the cam gear is lined up with its mark and the pulley is lined up at the bottom... If it is, you should be good to go pass the smog test..
CA smog testing sucks ass. I just paid people to pass mine for me when I was living there.
