Conover Motor Sports build, SCCA ITA EF Civic EX SedanHi all,
I've been lurking here for a bit trying to brush up on some EF Sedan info and figured that most of you over here hadn't seen/heard about the new car build that Conover Motorsports is doing for me. The car is being built primarily for SCCA ITA competition with an eye towards crossover legality to NASA PT/HC.
Before gutting/cage/etc but with a test fit of the suspension and race wheels/tires
Out comes all the interior, glass, engine, tranny, and most of the body panels
Test fit of the race seat and mounts
Custom cage courtesy of Chris Schimmel with Competition Cages
It'll have a Speedway style rear bar... here Chris is welding in the custom mounts
Dry-break fitting for the 22 Gallon Enduro style fuel cell
Wiring will be inspected and unneeded wires removed per SCCA IT Rules
All the undercoating has been stripped off
Some final cleaning before the primer goes on...
Epoxy primer coat:
Today I received some more photos... these show the beginning of the white base coat going on.
The fender still has some cosmetic rust repair that will be taken car of before final paint work is completed. The rear fenders will also be "rolled" per IT rules. Also, notice the end of the custom rear Speedway swaybar mount.
Below is a good shot of the rear swaybar mount again along with a good view into the rear cage area. The massive hole is where the fuel cell will be mounted.
The top coat of paint should be going on shortly!
Feel free to let me know if you have any questions on the build

Wow very nice...
what motor/build are you doing?
|
Xian
|
Engine/tranny are the regular "IT Build":
D16A6
.040 over w/ stock type pistons
head milled for .5 bump in compression
intake and exhaust ports gasket matched 1" into the head
Stock intake manifold, TB, cam, rods, crank, etc
AEM Filter on a stick
Stock tranny with 4.7 FD and OPM LSD
Spec clutch & PP
Stock flywheel
Stock ECU and injectors
Dynos mid-120's on a dynapack.

Ok so all this money into the chasis and you keep the d16a6?

| _Keith_ wrote: | | Ok so all this money into the chasis and you keep the d16a6? |
Correct. Rules are rules... IT classes require you to run the stock type engine. FWIW, in the southeast, SCCA ITA has some of the toughest/tightest racing available.
As far as $$ into the chassis, you can do it "cheap" or "right". Doing it the "cheap" way means that you half-ass the cage and paint. The wear items you don't replace up-front just end up breaking for you at the track... the result is that you waste money on entry fees and towing. Not fun. Doing it the "right" way up front costs more initially as you're not deferring any of the wear item replacement cost. The good thing is that you end up with a car with no DNF's and it's easier to find renters for Enduro's as they know they're renting a solid car and have a chance at winning

Yes I agree with what he said. You sir, have a nice f'in build on your hands. Can't wait to see the finished product and then some vid of that thing in action. Please keep us updated with detailed pix and content!

Well, slight delay with the painter (death in the family). The base white is done and the suspension is starting to go back on. Should be a roller in the next couple days

any plans on going into a different class? and maybe swap a different motor in?

Thanks for the kind words No plans for any type of engine swap as that would severely limit the classes and organizations to race with.

Some minor delays wrapping up the paint but here it is!
There were a few delays with the paing but here's an update:
Mmmmmm... nice!
Damn, that's clean!
Beautiful looking (IMO)!!
The final product is a result of a local painter doing the tub/cage and Tom Landock of Kernersville, NC doing the exterior paint. A completely top-notch job by CMS and their painters!!
Christian, who's gonna feel kinda guilty after the first door donut.

It has 8 attachment points (rear shock towers, main hoop, front A-pillar down tubes, forward braces off the a-pillar tubs that go to the front firewall/footwell area). Let me know if you're looking for photos of a particular part of the cage.
BTW, noticed that a couple of you are in FL... anyone up in the Jacksonville area?

No it's the Laguna Blue from the newer S2000's... it's been offered on them for 06, 07, and 08 I think?

Those look like the goodridge brake hoses i've got. why would you leave power steering??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
|
Xian
|
Power Steering must be retained per the SCCA IT ruleset... besides, it'll make the car less tiring to drive in the long races and when I add under-drive pulleys it'll only cost maybe 1hp. All in all, pretty negligible penalty for keeping it.

you said you live in JAX right?
are you having all this done locally, or elsewhere? i would love to see it in person oneday
|
Xian
|
Yep, I'm actually just south of JAX. The heavy work isn't being done locally as there's really nobody here that I'd trust to do it. I'm still going to have quite a bit of finish work to do on it over the winter... should be picking it up in the next couple of weeks as a running roller.
I'll let everyone know once I get the car home... no problem if you want to come over and take a look at it. Only danger is that I might put you to work

Cool. Between autocross and club racing, SCCA has a class and budget for just about everyone out there
I'll give you a shout when I get the car back!

i was wondering how that color scheme would look on a sedan i like it.
the car looks good, the only thing that's bugging me is the welding could be done a tad bit better.

Are you referring to the welding for the cage or the stuff for the kill switch and window net?
|
ksconekiller
|
I don't know what he was referring to, but they look fully functional to me. Isn't that what counts?
Hey, what offset are those wheels? I assume they are 7" wide with 225 Hoosiers. How much clearance do you have? I'm considering 225 street tires and wondered how your spacing was. Also, have you rolled the rear fender lip? Was it necessary?
Thanks.

Kinda... functional matters but having an aesthetically pleasing race car was part of the reason I sold my CRX and built from scratch on the new one. I'd agree that the kill switch mounting plate is acceptable but not great welding however the cage is extremely good, IMO. FWIW, the kill switch plate and window net welding were done by the shop doing most of the prep whereas the cage was done by Chris Schimmel at Competition Cages.

Personally, I run 225/50 14 Hoosiers... here's what I posted in your other thread:
Are you looking for street tires or R-comps? 225/45 15 Hoosier R's will fit.... barely. The fronts aren't nearly as much trouble as the rears where space is tighter. Fenders will have to be thoroughly rolled front and rear. On a 7" wide wheel, you'll need something around a 38mm offset. I've got zero idea if the 225's will rub on the plastic fender liner but I'd imagine that they would...
PS
I'll get some better exterior pics later this month after the headlights go in and the bumper skins are mounted.

Got the headlights in along with the front and rear bumper beams (re-sprayed them black and took care of some rust damage) along with the front bumper skin. Hung the rear bumper skin but haven't bolted it up yet. Also cleaned up some of the black trim pieces and Zero'd out the front toe.
Coming together slowly... still have a metric shit-ton of stuff to do but it's getting closer!

Are you keeping all the glass, or swapping to lexan?
|
Xian
|
I'll be putting back in stock glass (front and rear windshield)... rules don't allow for lexan. Driver and passenger front glass can stay out since the doors needed to be gutted for the door bars. Driver and passenger rear glass has to stay b/c of the rules.

ITA is a tough class. I'm hoping for some wins and podiums in shorter, sprint races and being able to kick some serious ass in the longer stuff (assuming I can find renters for the long stuff... this crappy economy has killed the rental market).

well i wanna wish u luck.

Thanks! The car should be fast and extremely consistent. (or at least that's my anticipation )

Just a quick update:
I wrapped up the car earlier this year... made it out to a test day double sprint weekend at Daytona in August. Cleared up a couple minor teething issues but nothing too serious. Played some with ride height and alignment settings. also worked on the tune a little bit (timing was way off). For the first weekend out, the car drove well and I ran mid-pack in a pretty deep field.
Spent last weekend at Road Atlanta for America's Road Race of Champions (ARRC). It's the "big" SCCA IT year end race. I came close to cracking top 10 for the sprint race (final position was 11th). The car drove great and was very consistent throughout the weekend. Did much better during the 3 Hour Enduro race and was running 2nd in class with only a couple laps to go. At that point, things went sideways and we ran low on fuel... ultimately, we ran out of gas a half lap from the checkers. We lost 2nd and 3rd but managed a 4th place finish. Barely of the podium in the first "long" race. All in all a very good showing, IMO.
Here are some pics in action from the weekend (Thanks to Perry Bennett for the great shots!):

Nice pictures, what're your plans now? What's been happening since January?
|
cleanRENO90

that is simply amazing.
|
Xian
|
I'm planning to continue running it in Sprint and Enduro races with SCCA... which events I run will depend some on who I find to rent seats in the car. I'd love to get enough interest to run the VIR 13, the Summit 12, or the Nelson 24.
In the meantime, I'll run "local" races in the SE.
Christian
edit:
My wife and I had triplets in March so things have been a bit hectic. Took longer than expected to find the time to get the car wrapped up. The August race was just a shakedown for the ARRC... just not enough hours in the day to get everything done sometimes.
