Bertrand's First Build (Slow Build)

With the arrival of my coil overs today, I figured it was time to start my Project Log.
It is going to be about a week till I have the time and tools to install them, but here is a picture of them still in the box.

Function and Form Type One
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice pick up man.
Bertrand

So to catch you up-to-date, which is not much, when I finally got the day off to put these on, found out that my rear suspension, that they sent me wasn't what I needed. I needed Type R cups so that they would fit. It took a few weeks to get that sorted out, and now that it is, my friend's jack that I have been using doesn't work anymore.
4dred6

any updates
Bertrand

Unfortunately, no. He hasn't got a new jack, and I can't afford to go get one either. So until then I am working on the little things. Changing to lights on the inside, trying to fix my reverse lights, replacing hoses that are as old as the car, fixing some cosmetics on the interior, install a speedo cable.
That is my list, but all that I have done is change my dome light.
Bertrand

So, I bought a jack and a couple of jack stands. I get under my car to put my rear suspension on, and this is what I see.

This on one side

And this on the other.
I am pretty sure that my EF is made up of more than one EF.
I didn't know I was driving Frankenstein...
Bertrand

Also, a list of little things that I have fixed.
Glove box now shuts in place
Dome light is now LED
Reverse Lights now work
Speedo Cable now exist
A lot of TLC to the dash and center console
4dred6

that sucks.  Mad
ilove(.)(.)

Stupid previous owners haha jk. On the other side "lets order some aluminun LCAs"
bac_ed36

That really sucks. Now you can drop in some nice lcas.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Thats so lame what kind of idiot does that.
Bertrand

bac_ed36 wrote:

That is my plan now. To save up and get some LCAs from F&F to match my coilovers.
So another delay in my plan.
I still have to replace my windshield.
This happened to me a week ago.

Now for close ups

There is the bottom one

And there is the top one
89 LX SOHC ZC

What the hell did that?
Bertrand

89 LX SOHC ZC wrote:

That is the confusing part. I didn't see it happen. All I heard was three loud bangs, the third one was it hitting the roof. Since it happened on the passenger side, the first thought through my head was that I just lost part of my front tire. I look in my rearview mirror to see if I can see what just flew off, saw nothing but the car behind me swerving. Then as I look away from the mirror I see my windshield.
Mike.

Geez, that's a hard hit on your window.
Hope you get to it fixed soon & cheap too.
Bertrand

Next paycheck it is being replaced. Cheap isn't going to happen though. Every place that I check is charging around $300
4dred6

damn dude that sucks
Ive replaced mine twice $120.  Cool
Bertrand

4dred6 wrote:

Where did you get it done for that cheap?
4dred6

local business. "cuba auto glass". here in El Paso. they say they have
the best glass in the world cuz the owner has another business on
the other side of the border and they use Chihuahua sand. cuz that
where he really started his business back in Juarez Chihuahua.
Bertrand

El Paso? I am only over 800 miles in the other direction. Hahaha I think I won't make that drive.
Bertrand

Sup guys!
So as a birthday present from my parents, my windshield has been replaced!
So with the money that I had saved up to fix that, I bought the LCA's that I needed instead.
http://functionnform.3dcartstores...da-Civic-1988-1995--Red_p_65.html
Figured since I already had the F&F Type 1 Coilovers, I might as well stick with the family and get the F&F LCA's.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice sounds like good idea to me.
4dred6

nice  Smile
Bertrand

Also, just ordered my long needed corner lights.
~Sp33~

Hahaha, that's the first time i've ever seen different LCA styles on the same car!
occupant

FYI for cheap auto glass, go to a Pick N Pull junkyard that has a glass shop.  Example, the one in Dallas/Grand Prairie by I-30 and Loop 12 has it.  There is also one in San Antonio, 410 at Roosevelt, I think they have a glass shop too.
89ef2

I "lol'd" at the control arms.... Shop and call around... Shouldnt be too expensive... Any more pics of the sedan?
Bertrand

Both of those towns are at the least five hours away from me.
Already got the windshield fixed.

Function and Form has yet to send or bill me for the LCAs that I ordered, and the same story for my corner lights. I think I am going to just cancel both and just reorder.
4dred6

that sucks. do you have any local shops where you could get them. i mean they ll be a bit more expensive but you wont have to wait.
Bertrand

4dred6 wrote:

Even at the local shops I still have to order them. The only place that I haven't checked is NAPA.
Bertrand

My corner lights should be in tomorrow!
FlatTireRacer

Post some pics up of the whole car bro!Don't be scared! LOL! J/K I live up in DFW area as well. We need to organize a Texas EF meet!  Very Happy
4dred6

Yeah I don't think I ever seen a pic of the whole car
Bertrand

I don't. I live in south east Texas.

Beaumont, is 20 minutes from where I live.
But we should try to get a Texas EF Meet going.

4dred6 wrote:

The only other place that I have posted pictures is in the intro thread.

As soon as those lamps are in and on the car, I will post some updated pictures.
Bertrand

Miss-read my e-mail, my corner lamps come in tomorrow. =(
Bertrand

Got another e-mail saying my corner lamps won't be in until Tuesday. I am really not liking UPS right now.
4dred6

Mad  that sucks
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Would y'all be interested to coming to Houston for an EF meet?  If Jesse isn't going to throw one, I will and within a few months.
Bertrand

Houston sounds great for me, but that isn't as far as a drive for me as it is for them.
FlatTireRacer

I wouldn't have a probem in going, at all. As long as my car's running by then and I can get the time off. I would love to kick it and meet fellow EF'r's!
Bertrand

So my corner lights came in today, and they no fit.  Mad

This is the second time I have ordered corner lights and they not fit. Now the first time was because they sent me corner lights for an Accord, but nonetheless this is the second time I have ran into this problem.  Evil or Very Mad
89civicracer

Dang! that sucks!
89 LX SOHC ZC

That really sucks sorry to hear that.
4dred6

That sucks dude
FlatTireRacer

Bertrand, I have your fix bro! You need to PM me!
Bertrand

FlatTireRacer wrote:

FlatTireRacer

They look like 88-89 hatch lights (they're shorter, leave a gap near the fender)
Bertrand

The shape of it fits, but the back side was wrong. With the help of FlatTireRacer help me find out that I need 90-91 corner lights.
~Sp33~

Bertrand wrote:

I swear you can swap them.  The 88-89's have a little plastic tab that sits behind the screw holes on the park lights (in the fender). If you get those plastic tabs, can't you run these?

I'm running 90-91 fenders and 88-89 park lights and i can't remember what i've done to make it work.
4dred6

I always wonder if u can swap the tabs
bac_ed36

That sucks about the corner lights but good luck man.
Bertrand

These are the back of the ones that I ordered.

And this is what I need. (And already have on the way. )
Bertrand

Also, a little side note, my EF is no longer my daily. I bought myself a 97 Nissan Pickup, so that I can beat that to the ground as I build my sedan. Which was my original attention, until my previous daily burned to the ground.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice.
4dred6

Sweet.  Very Happy
89ef2

Burn to the ground? Pics?
Bertrand

89ef2 wrote:

My first thought wasn't to take pictures. Hahaha. That is what everyone wants to see when I tell them that it burned to the ground. I will never drive a Camry again.
wid

You can run the 88-89 sedan corners on a 90-91 and vice versa.  The tabs are interchanegeable but you will need to remove the 2 brackets on the headlight housing on 90-91 for the 88-89 to fit.  I had a set of them on my 91 sedan 2 years ago.

You should check eBay for parts like corner lights and so forth, you won't have to worry about the wrong item being ordered.  A great Texas seller I have bought a lot of parts from is called Streetrays and they are located in pflugerville which is close to Austin.

Also, still waiting on pics of the whole car!  Smile
4dred6

I've bought a lot of shit from them in the past. Good seller.
Bertrand

Okay, just to let you guys know where I am at, the truck that I got so I didn't have to drive my EF around everywhere is actually giving me some problems, so once I get that fix, there will be more updates to follow. But I did get to fix my oil leak today on the EF. All it needed was a new distributor seal, and to replace a missing bolt from the distributor. Now to go change the timing belt.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Sucks about the truck but at least you're still getting things done on the sedan.
Bertrand

So money is not rolling my way, which means no car parts at the moment. But I still have this itching to work on the sedan, so I went for cosmetics in my trunk. I didn't take a before picture, but I did get during and after.
This is what the support under the carpet looked like

So here was my plan.

Bertrand

Also, my corner lights that I got from FlatTireRacer.

It is not a flush fit, but I can fix that.  Wink
Bertrand

And for those who have been asking for pictures of the car as a whole

Here is a side shot before I washed it today.

And here is the engine bay after I washed it today

Cleaning today was more focused on the engine bay than the exterior.
Bertrand

My next little cheep project for her, is to repaint the front bumper. You can't see it in any of these pictures, but it was originally red, and the person before me did a terrible job at paining it, and a lot of the red sticks out on the front of it. So next week on my day off, that is what I will be doing.
4dred6

Updates look good man.
FlatTireRacer

Looks good bro! You should re-touch your flat black in a semigloss black. It'll retain that matte look, add a little sheen and amke it to where you can wax it to bring the color back when it start to fade to that dark grey. Just sayin. Car looks good!  Wink
89ef2

I need to do something like that with my trunk... like the bay too... contemplating  on doing that to my sedan but still on both sides of the fence
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice update man.
Bertrand

89ef2 wrote:

I have a system in mine, so it needed to be done. The spare tire has been what has been holding it up. Hahaha
89civicracer

I did the same thing.. Replaced that flimsy thing like you did.
Spare tire is out of there, that is where all my audio shit is kept.  Laughing
Bertrand

So a few things have happened since my last update, but not to the car. My roommates and I have moved into a new house. Where two of us can not even get our cars in the driveway. Hahaha. I also just got myself a new toy to tinker with as well, an 09 Honda Ruckus.

New House

Mine and my roommate's Civics

And the new toy
HondaJunkie

Nice pickup on the house it looks like you have a good amount of working space on the side of the house. I like the ruckus they look sick just lowered with a frame extension.
4dred6

Nice, ruckus looks nice
89ef2

And you thought the civic had good gas mileage... bet the ruckus is ridiculous
89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice other than not being able to get in the driveway.
Bertrand

89ef2 wrote:

Oh yeah, 100+ miles to the gallon.
Bertrand

89 LX SOHC ZC wrote:

The truck makes it in at least. Hahaha And the other roommates integra, but it doesn't sound pretty when he does come in.
I tried posting a picture of the cement bump that denies us entrance, but the site wouldn't let me load that photo. I am sure with some plywood as ramps and some 2x4's underneath it as cross beams we could make it in and out. Hahahaha but that is to much work to get a car in and out early in the morning.
Bertrand

I have a very sad update... Due to limited space at my house for vehicles, (and my neighbor across the street not being able to back up like a normal human being,) I had to sell my EF. =( But the not so sad news about it, is that I am selling it to my friend who will take good care of it and do something with it. He has a 60s model Mustang, and needs a good car to drive so that he work on it. After showing him pictures and some of your builds, he said that the Civic will be his next project. And he promised to let me help. So, my favorite car is leaving me, but she isn't going far. Hopefully in the future when I have more space, I will be able to buy her back, or even a new one. I will still visit here and watch all of you, because there are a lot of great things going on here. Thanks for all that you have done to help me thus far. And most importantly, thanks for sharing the EF love.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Sad to hear you're leaving our little world but glad to know it's going to a deserving home.  Please continue to update the thread as often as you can or have the new owner make a new one.

With all of that being said, I have a feeling you'll be back  Wink  Once you've been bit by the bug, it's hard to stay away forever.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Its to bad she has to go keep us posted on her progress hope to see you back in a sedan some time.
4dred6

Gl finding another sedan. They re becoming harder to find
FlatTireRacer

Sad
Bertrand

4dred6 wrote:

I am seeing them everywhere down here
4dred6

Haha that's funny, when u have cash and want one is impossible to find
Them. Once you buy one u start seeing them all the time.
