90efLS's swap and sedan build up, new pics

I am starting to sand tomorrow after work and will be swapping in a d16z6 in 2 weeks. I am getting all the parts and tools together at the moment. I just ordered my obdo to obd1 jumper harness and gasket kit an timing belt. What else will I need for the swap besides the 8 extra wires for the o2 sensor, vtec etc. I have the complete swap btw. I will post pics tomorrow of what the car looks like now and will update as often as possible. Any help will be greatly appreciated as this will be my first swap and sand/paint job.
90efLS

Ok here are two pics of what it looks like now and one pic of what sanding I was able to fit in today. Its gonna be a slow but steady process. I will be getting a da sander tomorrow and will be hopefully finishing the quarter panel and be able to spray it with sanding primer and start on the next one:) Also! Ordered the obdo to obd1 jumper harness today.

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Good luck dude, I suck at body work Razz
90efLS

lol thanks. I have learned a little in the past few years but I have been reading and watchin on the internet for the last few weeks also for extra help.
90efLS

I got the QP sanded and got a few coats of sandable primer on and so far I am impressed lol. I will have a picture of it tomorrow, its way to dark atm. I usually work 6am-2pm then get to come home and try to get stuff done with what little time I have. Another reason why this will be slow...but steady. I am excited to learn even if its from my own mistakes. Anyways startin the other QP tomorrow. Hope to have the front end done by the end of the weekend.
90efLS

I finally have a few days to get some work in on the ef. Also just got my obdo to obd1 jumper harness yesterday in the mail. Im hoping to get the other QP, hood and doors sanded and primed this weekend.
90efLS

swap starts tomorrow. will post pics tomorrow night. Going from a d15b2 to a d16y7 with a z6 head. I also have a rebuilt y8 head with full gasket kit and arp headstuds just in case of emergencies. Just a question, what cam would be good in the z6 head without upgrading my head?
90efLS

d16z6 build and swap

It has been a while since work has picked up a bit. I have started rebuilding a d16z6 to swap into my ef. The old smoking d15b2 has been pulled and stripped of the stage 2 exedy clutch and newer flywheel for the z6. Here are a few pics of progress, I dont have time to upload them all today sorry guys.

Kinda glad to see the little 1.5 smoker gone lol

This is what I found after pulling the z6 and pulling it apart

And this is what it looks like now

I will have more hopefully after work tonight. Sending pics from my phone to do this takes forever lol. But it is a rebuilt d16z6 block, y8 head with low miles and new cam, arp headstuds, z6 IM and TB, custom dizzy, exedy stage 2 clutch with new flywheel and a virgin p28 ecu. I am trying to save up enough tips for a cam but am still hesitant on what one I should get. I want a nice streetable cam that I wont need to do any valvetrain modifications with.

Monday I will be back in the shop putting it all together and hopefully dropping in the car. I miss my ef like crazy, we are driving a 1980s toyota loner van that gets like 16 mpg no joke lol. Well guys any suggestions or ideas? Thanks!
Sancho

What did you do to the dizzy?

I'm doing a mini-me for my dd and can't decide between a z6 head or y8. I'm knowledge less when it comes to single cams.
90efLS

What block do you have? And I am going with a port n polished z6 head now but for the dizzy I was going to use a d15b7 dizzy and z6 cam gear.
Sancho

B7 block.
90efLS

You can use the b7 dizzy since it is already an obd1. Do you have a jumper harness also? In the last 1 1/2 weeks I have pulled and pulled apart 2 d16z6's and a d16y7/y8 mini me. But am using the block from the first z6 and head from the second one. 120k on the block and 10k on the head.
90efLS

I pulled apart two of these, used this head. More pics tonight

My arp headstuds waiting for a head lol. Its all coming together tonight.
Sancho

My daily is a 95 vx so no need for a jumper. How much did the ARP hardware run you?
90efLS

Nice and duh I should have known, you have a b7 lol already obd1. And the arp's cost me $150...also came with a FULL gasket kit for a z6 and a fresh y8 head with matching dizzy. But new they run around $120ish. Very good investment from what I have read. This is my first set.
90efLS

Ok so I just got the D16Z6 to start and run beautifully.....but.....After ten mins it started to overheat, bad. All coming from the head. I think it could be due to the ARP headstuds. I was informed they were for a y8 not a z6 so I am guessing thats the reason but IDK yet. Have to pull it apart tomorrow....again. Any ideas?
~Sp33~

Did you get all the old gasket off of the head?

Did you torque the headstuds up in the right procedure? If you were able to wrench them to the specified torque without issue then i don't think it's an issue with the studs.

Did you swap anything else at the same time? Thermostat? Any mix of oil/water? Any leaking water? Seeping oil?
90efLS

It was the headstuds. We got them out and a buddy of mine helped me determine they were meant for a y8. Yay. So back to oem head bolts which I dont mind. But we encountered another issue. The middle rear head bolt hole had been striped and heli-coiled. And the heli coil failed when torquing the oems in. So tomorrow we are getting a Honda heli coil kit from the dealership to do it the right way. It was done wrong it looks like the first time it was done. But tomorrow it will be done and it will be on the road. Hopefully then I will have the time to post all the pics and things I found. I might even start a new project log and do it right. I have had no time for the site lately since people at where I work quit. But more hours = more $ for the sedan. But on a good note I got some NICE newish oem seats out of a 90 lx and a black fresh dash also.
~Sp33~

What is the difference between the headstuds? Good stuff that you found the prob.
90efLS

I am still figuring up the differences but one big one is the head bolt next to the vtec solenoid doesnt have the same depth z6 to y7/y8. Using y8 headstuds on a z6 makes it uneven which = bad. But tomorrow it will be back on the road
89 LX SOHC ZC

Glad to see you've figured it out.
90efLS

Thanks me too. I was going to go get the civic today and take her home but our loner van got 2 flat tires within 20 miles of eachother. One popped and we put on the spare then 20 miles down the road the drivers side front exploded. It took 2 hours of waiting to change the first one cuz all my tools are in the sedan and 4 hours for the second. Most my day spent waiting to change tires. But I did score some 90-91 taillights and middle plastic for the trunk, that kinda made it better lol. I am also looking for a plastic filler piece that goes between the hood and front bumper, mine got jacked.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Sounds like a fine day LOL. Very Happy
90efLS

It was the best day ever lol. I was suppossed to finish the civic that day an bring her home. But that will happen tomorrow. Its been at the shop for 3 weeks! Its my first time doing a swap myself so its been long but a learning experience for sure. But I am going to run the dpfi for the first 1500 to work the gaskets in and just to be sure I wont go over 3 rpm and ruin anything lol. After 1500 miles the mpfi will go on an vtec will crack:) But for now here are some more pics, I have been busy so pics have been put off a lot.

Such a good sight

Looking better. Was pumped to see it in the bay

It sat a bit sideways at first but we got it straightend out

Was on break, decided a side shot was in order, almost done just doing some last minute fine tuning

My buddy had to come out just for pictures. He just got the dohc zc swap finished in his hatch

One of my favorite pics so far but will look better when the mpfi is in and working

Thats all for tonight. I will have more soon when I can find them. I might even post a vid if I learn how to.
MRED

BAH! i wish you lived closer! I've been itchin to get my hands dirty with body work again! havnt done it in ages. I've been busy with my own engine swap and its a pain in my ass so far. So i know what you're feelin hahaha.

How do you plan on going about painting the sedan? Shop? Garage? I was just curious if you were going to give one of those rustoleum "$50 paint jobs" a shot haha.
90efLS

Well yea actually I am thinking about the $50 paint job lol that was the reason I started sanding because funds are tight. But I plan to go to 1000 grit I think. This is my first time so its a learning experience. And Yea Seattle is a mob but not to bad tho. Its about 3 hours from here at 70 lol. Right now I sanded the QP to 320 and shot sandable primer on. I am going to do it like that piece by piece then once the whole car is like that start again with a finer grit lol Are you good with body work and paint?
MRED

I'm not ganna go as far to say that i'm good at bodywork and paint. I will just say i have experience and took a few cemesters of autobody at south seattle community college jsut to learn the skill. I will also say that i was def one of the top students in theclass but isnt sayin much considering the tards that were attending lol.

Here's just a few suggestions and you can take them with a grain of salt:

1) make sure ALL layers of paint have about a 1/4th inch or more of a feathered edge
2) when using bodyfiller(never bondo), always apply firm and thin layers for less bubbles or pits after it dries and for less sanding you'll have to do. Remember, the coarser the sand paper grit, the straighter it cuts but the higher the risk you'll leave deep scratches that will be seen in final paint. Finish filler with about 150-180grit
3) remember, primer is used primarily for paint adhesion. It just so happens to act as a subtle filler for fine scrtaches. Get a can of "guide coat" spray paint to spray on the primer to help you see where you've sanded and how much you've sanded. This is to be sprayed on VERY lightly. Should look like a bunch of dots. Not a layer of paint. If you plan on only primering the car once, finish with uh...800 i believe? Otherwise, finish with 400grit 1st primer job, and then 800grit on second primer job.
4) after color, let it sit for at LEAST 3 months before you wetsand and buff it. Finish with 1500-2000 grit.

*special note* when sanding, always sand side to side in an X form. This will help get rid of fine and deep scratches better or prevent them.

You've got a ton of work ahead of ya but damn are you ganna look back at it and realize how much you enjoyed it. Take your time on everything. Run your hands flat against every inch of every surface you are painting very slowly to make sure there arent any high or low spots. Good luck bro. Update the thread if you ever get stumped about somethig in the process and i'll TRY and throw 2 cents atcha!
90efLS

Damn thanks for the guide man! lol I will deffinitly keep updating on it and ask for help when needed. When I get the civic back tomorrow I am starting the sanding again. I got the QP finished to a point. But I might re-do it and go to 400 THEN primer like you said then go to 800 then primer. I have learned a bit here and there through the passed two years and have helped the guy who taught me what I know with a few big projects. I actually like the sanding, being able to notice every little thing and to see your progress. Its also very calming. But I do know that I will look at it when its done and be proud to say I did that along with building the motor. But one step at a time lol
MRED

Yeah, ppl always seem to say they hate bodywork for some reason. Its VERY calming and requires you to get damn near intimate with the car lol. Unlike motor work which involves throwing wrenches when shit dont go as smoothly as planned. Which they NEVER do haha. Also, double check my grit recommendations, its been a long while since i've done bodywork so i could be a bit off.

Oh yeah, what are you ganna do about the front end now? What was that? You're ganna get a JDM front since you have to replace the radiator support anyways? You're crazy Lol =P
90efLS

NOOO NO NO NO LOL I am keeping my front end man. My radiator was shot not the support. I dont want the jdm front, I like the usdm I got. Or edm cuz its an ed3 idk lol. And the grit sounds about right.

And yea I just got done with the throwing wrenched part. On to the intimate part haha. And since winter is coming and we have a little geo metro I can stick the sedan in my garage and do the body work that needs done.
MRED

Ahahaha sounds good. Get'er done broskee!
90efLS

Finally got to take her home today. The first long test drive and man, it feels good. All that hard work and blood sweat an thrown wrenched lol it pays off. Now I got 1300 miles to go then mpfi n vtec get hooked up and i can see what this build really has. But i gotta say, for the 700 i spent and 3 weeks ive put into this i am satisfied. Ive learned a lot and had a blast doing it.

Also I can start my sanding again tomorrow and installing some new interior an the rear lights.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Glad to see it all came together.
90efLS

Thanks me too. I am getting miles on her now so we can do the mpfi swap and hook up vtec as well. I would be sanding away but the weather has turned and went to crap so I am talking to my landlord to see if I can use the shop for $50 a month. If so that will make my winter project so much easier
90efLS

Finally some kind of update. I got some nice DA seats to bolt onto my civic seat rails and put in, also got a new volvo lip to fit/fabricate and put on. The other lip I had was toast thanks to letting a buddy of mine drive it around town for a day. He isn't to used to the low life lol. I also decided to just work on my turbo kit over the winter and install it when warmer weather comes around. I dont want to get ahead of myself an mess something up. Other than that not much has been going on in the four door dept.
90efLS

Pulled a foam like si spoiler from an 86 prelude that I am going to fabricate to fit my sedan this weekend. From just a quick mock up to see if it will fit and what it will look like it looks pretty good. I just want to make is as flush and stock looking as possible. Maybe fool some people into thinking it came like that lol.
