1991 ef sedan !

So finally got around to doing something to my ef!!
i found some time in between my job, school, money,go kart project for my little bro, girlfriend, nazi zombies, my trip to mall of america and its just way to cold here in chicago!
i ordered some lowering springs 2.5 in the front 2.25 in the back!

then got to work!

i dont know if anyone else has run into this problem or im just a noob but the bushing that connects to the shock got stuck in the control arm along with half the bolt becaue it broke off. i put it on the press and put around 10 tons of pressure and wouldnt budge!
so i ended up cutting the bolt and getting a new bushing and bolt when i got back i realized the bushing was way bigger then the holee i know their pressed fitted but that seemed imposiible so i started grinding the lower control arm hole until i got the bushing to fit about 2 hours later!

in the end it turned out sick!

i am taking this build nice and slow!
i love my sedan and drive it everyday a low and slow build for now!
will take more pics tomorrow after a good washhh.
Sancho

Umm there is a problem with your pictures I think. Your car still looks 4x4 status in the last pic. Hopefully you are just holding out on the good pictures on us Very Happy
1991 ef sedan

Am i supposed to use the html code? or the img code?
EsSieJ

No, he means you fitted lowering springs but your car doesn't look lower. Razz
Welcome!

thanks!
but your car has now better handling Smile good first step!
Enneaitch

91 ef I have had the exact problem with the bushes... I'm in the middle of replacing the bushes. And one still has the bolt  in. Can't remove the shock with it stuck ok so need to get that sorted!!!
1991 ef sedan

Better handling is always a must!haha
yeah man im telling you i decided to just cut it off with a cutoff wheel went and got a new stock bushing from the autoparts store and it was way bigger then the hole!
i was there for about 2 hours grinding the hole until i could finally press the bushing in thats crazy!
here are more pics.

1991 ef sedan

i wasnt sure where to post an idle problem so i decided to post it on my project loggg.
i have an idle problem where it seems to get stuck at 2000 rpms ill reach a stop put it in neutral and wait 5 seconds then the idle will drop rapidly to its normal range.
anyone have any advice?
squarebuttlife91

i had this when i went multi point. it ended up being the i needed to reset the ecu by pulling the positive off my battery. also to wires on my dizzy where switched. are you dual or multi?
1991 ef sedan

i have a multipoing D15B2.
ill try the disconneting the battery and hazard fuse and see what happens!
squarebuttlife91

okayy. also. is your distributor hard wired in or does it have the clip?
1991 ef sedan

its hard wired!
1991 ef sedan

got around to getting some new pipes!
got a new header and full exhaust done at a shop!
i was aiming for 2.5 but my buddy hooked me up with 2.0 for 60 bucks so i couldnt refuse!
my set up was header and straightpipe to a fart can but after days of the annoying farting i crawled under the car and welded a cherrybomb as a mid pipe it sounds alot better and deaperrr.
now im thinking about going with blast pipes nothing to ridiculous but something to satisfy my crave for them!
Towlie

Nice progress!

Yea I had headers+straight pipe to a fart cannon... and jesus christ that thing was loud! I didn't like to go over 3k because it was just to annoying, so I got my Cat and a new OEM style muffler and now it purr's like it's supposed to Razz

Now I just have to install my OEM headers and I am going to be back to OG status Very Happy
squarebuttlife91

hey man. when my car did that it was because the two blue wires were mixed up. my distributor is hard wired in also. its a pain in the ass. hope this helps
1991 ef sedan

sorry i havent been able to post in a whilee.
couple days ago i was driving down a main street when my hood went flying off! some stupid kid that was looking at my engine bay didnt close my hood all the way and i was stupid enough to not double checkk. Sad

but i did get my hands on a B18!
once i get time ill rip it apart and check the condition its in if not im aiming for a rebuild! maybe a turbo laterrr.
does anyone know the hp on a boosted B18?

i also got around to installing a da lip!

heres a pic of my tired D series

and heres the badass ef!
1991 ef sedan

replaced the da lip with this delicious volvo lip!

and i got tired of not having a cup holder so i welded something up!

and i got a new hood because my old one was trashed

got some new struts for cheap brand new
we'll see how well they hold up just waiting on skunk 2 sleeves
Sancho

How much are your planning to boost on the ls? Mine is fun, and right now it's all stock with a cai. Whats up with your rear bumper?
1991 ef sedan

i dont want to run too much boost id say 9psi just to give it a little kick!
maybe just replace the rods and rod bolts and keep everything else stock.
my rear bumber? thats how i roll! Cool
the mount behind the bumber rusted out so the bumber is just hanging a little bit! chicago weather can do that! Sad
pErFu2m

i was going through this thread the other day. do you need a plastic filler piece between the hood/metal filler? i have one lying around. still clean. lmk, i can ship it out. (pay shipping, $5)
1991 ef sedan

i actually have one laying around to that ive been meaning to put on!
thanks for looking out man! Very Happy
i got my hands on some goodies!

a pair of blox lower control arms!
going to paint them a bright green!
and some rota jspl's!

88browncow

im def liking the way the rotas look.  I have always liked that wheel.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

I concur
1991 ef sedan

im digging them!
i will post better pics soon. Cool
1991 ef sedan

got the blox control arms painted and on!

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Please fix your rear bumper, it's no that hard Wink  Look good though, much better.
d16efsedan

1991 ef sedan

haha will do boss!
thanks thanks!
1991 ef sedan

got a sick ass grant steering wheel
90EFSedan

Surprised   Laughing  Thats the exact wheel I have in my Nova, lol. Its not bad mine hasn't cracked or anything and its been on it for about 3 years.
1991 ef sedan

yeahh i love it makes me feel like im racingg!
what year nova?
me and my buddy are working on a 78 malibu wagon that we cant get running right due to carb adjustments!
we didnt grow up with them so we have no clue!
90EFSedan

It's a 77. I had a 77 Malibu for a short while but I never drove it much at all, never even registered actually.

But yeah if it still has the factory Rodchester four-barrel carb those things are a mother fking nightmare to get tuned in. They run pretty hot if you find someone that can adjust them.. So I've heard... Every car I've had that had one from the factory was always replaced.

A buddy of mine did a swap into his '88 Camaro and kept the Rodchester for awhile... It wasn't too bad in his opinion.. Im like you though, not a lover of a carburetor.  More trouble than they are worth in todays world  Rolling Eyes
1991 ef sedan

couldnt of said it better myself!
1991 ef sedan

does anyone know any good build threads that involve b series into ef?
any links will be gladly appreciated!

I'm lookin at doin one myself. D15 Auto: B16A 5speed Twisted Evil
90EFSedan

Thats my long-term dream for my sedan. tigerjapanese.com has a B16A + 5spd kit for 1800 shipped. All you'd need is axles, mounts, and linkage. Maybe a couple other things I really don't know.
JAP SEDAN MAN

THATS Very expensive for a motor!   there is alot of good posts on B series swap on H+T  FAQ  what y need to know man?
90EFSedan

Well it comes with the harness ecu accessories and all that good stuff.. But yeah like I said I wouldn't know, lol. I won't waste your time asking questions at this point it will be awhile before I dive that deep.
1991 ef sedan

i just want someone thats a fucken badass to give me a link or something on a good B18A1 swap into ef chassis.
this is my first swap so forgive me if im a little scared!
i heard its very easy and have done my research i just need pictures of the swap to feel comfortable enough to do it!

Second quote I ripped off today but that fits me to a T as well... I'm too broke to trial and error shit, lol. Too broke to do a swap at the moment anyway.. Hopefully sometime this year I'll put some go fast in muh baby.
1991 ef sedan

got my 4 door sorta flush!

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Mo betta
1991 ef sedan

ive had a real bad monthhh. havent posted since ive had lots going on. first my stereo and precious tools were stolen out of my car in the school parking lot with security on duty. my brand new snap on multimeter was in the  Sad
then my bottom ball joint disconnected from the knuckle leaving me at the side of the road for countless hours.
finally on my way back from my girlfriends house some drunk or really stupid driver decided to turn directly into my lane causing me to step on the brakes but i still ended up hitting his passenger side and of course he did a hit and run.
i was left picking up my hood from the middle of the street and taking my fender off since it was destroyed and rubbing in numerous places.
drestoyed my corner light, fender, and bent the fuck out of my hood and headlight is squashed in.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Yes that one bad month sorry to here about youre troble and hope you have better times.
1991 ef sedan

thanks 89 lx sohc .
my plans so far is just save up and hope i run into another clean 4 door i can scoop upp.
sell my b18 and go d16z6 turbo.
1991 ef sedan

well haven't been posting but I've been creeping off other members builds. pretty sick stuff is all i have to say.

there comes a time in a boys life where they turbo their civic!
so i just purchased d15 head, turbo manifold,BOV,arp head studs, and got an intake manifold with throttle body and injectors off a 93 eg for free.

im still searching around for a good starter set up.
some people say don't waist your time and just buy a b16 or b18c.
That the d15 crank is weaker then the d16.

I want to run 5pounds or 6 pounds of boost and daily it.
still cant find anywhere where it says i can run stock injectors and fuel pump. just so i can get my foot threw the door with a turbo set up until i get my hands on a d16z6.
will post pics up soon!
Towlie

Dude do I hate thieves!

and GL with the turbo bro!!!
Proper282

If you are going to boost i woud suggest changing injectors. The RDX injectors are a good option. Very good spray pattern, and pretty cheap from the dealer. Then look into a VAFC hack. Guys have been running 10lbs with the hack and no issues.

Good luck. I'm toying with a turbo plan if i can't find a SC for a decent price soon enough  Very Happy
1991 ef sedan

yeah i think i should get injectors and fuel pump.
would you say the rdx injectors better then dsm injectors?
and sorry for being new to this but whats a VAFC hack? like a chipped ecu?

some small updates.
got a tenzo seat for 30 bucks i know i know tenzo sucks!
but 30 bucks! and a 4  point harness got it for 15 bucks!

and a rear strut bar painted it green because im a badass!

and tried my hand at some custom work with this harness bar since they don't make one for the sedan.
didn't come out too good as you can see!
might just get a hatch one and modify it!
1991 ef sedan

and heres the head i got!
still trying to figure out what head it is!
and the code says 87 is that the year that cant be right.

1991 ef sedan

a little update, got my 5psi waste gate spring in the mail! Very Happy
and made a deal with a guy off craiglist im going to trade him the b18a1 i have sitting around for his d16z6!

so the swap is supposed to be a no brainer, convert to obd1,get an ecu, i can use my existing trans and shift linkage, drop it in and awayyyyy i gooo!

butttttttt one of my buddies said v-tec and turbo isn't a very good combination. I would think it would be a great combination!
let me know what you think if anyone is still following this build!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Well its good to see some good news coming after the bad but I have no answers about the vtec and turbo combo good luck.
1991 ef sedan

thanks man!
id rather have a handicapped ed4 then a tercel or a geo! thats the way i look at things!
Dolie ED3

Yeah dude keep posting! I follow your build!only i don.t response because i don,t now that much about turbo,s!
But im curious for them!like your style, the domo kun valve cover.my wifes parents are from hong kong and she lovesss domo kun.lol!keep up posting bro. Smile
EF Sedan Enthusiast

I like your logic.
1991 ef sedan

haha thanks dolly ed3!

ef sedan enthusiast: im flattered coming from one of the big guys of the site!
1991 ef sedan

whats up sedan nuts!
did some research on the head i got and found out that everyone else had a hard time finding what kind of head it is.
came up with the head was used in d15b7-d16a6- and the d15b2 i believe.

i did install fog lights will post pics up soon!
and looking into a rustoleum paint job!
Proper282

It's not that vtec and turbo don't work well together, it's just that it is a whole other level of tuning. With non-v you just tune it and run. With vtec you have to tune to both came profiles and figure out what crossover is best for your car.

You could probably trade your z6 head for a y7 and still make good n/a power and then when you boost it's all gravy!
1991 ef sedan

i had a hunch it was going to be a pain to turbo with vtec!

im going to get a newer head for my d15 and turbo it at 5psi for a nice daily driver.

do i still need to upgrade to a walbro fuel pump even if its just 5 psi?
im in search for dsm injectors and i know im going to have to spend big bucks on tuning and an ecu!
1991 ef sedan

got some parts on the cheaps!

89 LX SOHC ZC

Cheap is always good.
1991 ef sedan

damn straight!
1991 ef sedan

Got my hands on some 15x8 rota grid v's!!!!
yeah they are fucken sick!!

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Nice!
Proper282

Perfect! The offset is just right... Roll/pull your fenders a bit and sink those bitches!
1991 ef sedan

Some pics! crappy! but better then mental pictures!

Then started polishing my wheels!

89 LX SOHC ZC

Nice art work LOL.  Wheels look good polished.
1991 ef sedan

haha yeah i got a little carried awayyyy. Embarassed

thanks! wheels are sick but takes so long to get them that way!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

I liked em bronze against the burgundy.
1991 ef sedan

Sad  Sad  Sad
1991 ef sedan

found a d16y8 longblock for 100 bucks so i ordered a rebuild kit the following day! as far as i know its a drop in swap. i can used the same tranny. i have to wire the motor for obd1 and get a p28 ecu. does the rywire 0d0 to obd1 kit take car of all of that?

MRED

If your tuner can not properly tune a SOHC vtec motor on 5-6psi properly, you need to go to another tuner lol. Maybe i'm just lucky but the shop we have around here in WA, they've got it down to a science where they simply charge a flat rate of like $200 or $300 for a basic tune on a boosted D. It also isnt so much a matter of how many pounds of boost you run, the concern is how much hp is being made. 5psi on a tiny turb is going to yield different results than 5psi on a larger turbo. With that being said, the general rule of thumb is to not go too much over 200whp on a d16z6/d16y8 w/ stock internals.

Good luck with the build though. Sucks VERY hard about all of your misfortune w/ the sedan so far.
90efLS

I take it your talking about speed factory lol. I need to make a trip there after winter;)

Good find with the $100 y8. And it is pretty much a drop in swap just make sure you use your old mount from your other d motor
on the drivers side so iot all fits correctly. I discarded mine with the motor and had to fabricate and eg mount to fit it in.
1991 ef sedan

Yeah ive been hearing that alot about psi not being important and horsepower being the key.
its going to be a while before i boost anyway! Sad
focusing on the swap first and ofcourse college doesnt pay itself!
welcome to the site by the way!

90efLS- yeah i was reading up on that.
i read i should use the motor side mounts in combination with the ef chassis bracket/mounts.
90efLS

Yea man use the chasis mounts for sure and good luck! Boost smart btw, take your time and learn and read as much as you can!
MRED

Thanks! Pick up a book called "maximum boost" by corky bell. It will help you understand a lot about turbos and turbo theory. It gets quite in depth and will more than likely require rereading several times to get a good grasp on the info.

90efls: yup! Speedfactory is the place to go for boosted single slams in the NW!!! make sure you call and setup an appointment ahead of time if you are looking to get things done. They are always stupid busy.
90efLS

Oh yea man I plan on making an appointment soon but set it up for like feb or march just so I know its a lock. And by then I should have more than enough reason to need a tune. My z6 will hopefully be boosted by then. Still trying to decide between t25 for low rpm spool or t3/t4 for some real fun lol.

1991 ef sedann: So how long til you will be rebuilding the y8 and posting some updates? Smile I am excited to see your progress man and help you in any way possible since I just went through all of this.
1991 ef sedan

well im rebuilding it in school .
every friday we have like 7 hours to do whatever we want!
so hopefully some updates and pics by next week!
right now im looking for a good cheap obd0 to obd1 jumper harness.
90efLS

Nice thats great that you have a lot of time to use:) Also, the y8 is an obd2 setup. But if you use the z6 or b7 intake mani and dizzy you can go obd1 I believe. Thats what stopped me from going y8 was that it was obd2. So if you have the right parts obd1 will be no problem. Also I got my obd0 to obd1 jumper off ebay for $50 and I had it within a few days of ordering.
1991 ef sedan

yeah i been looking at the ebay ones because they are cheap.
how well do they work and hold up?
90efLS

I am actually going to be using mine in a week but i have heard from many people that they work just fine and hold up very well. Better than doing all the wiring yourself lol. But seriously make sure you stay obd1. Best bet is to use a d16z6 intake mani, throttle body, dizzy and ecu.
Jae_Rex

I'm not far from Chicago, and our cars are going through the same faze, almost the same look etc. I did get new metal rockers and 1/4's welded in and I am working on the bodywork right now. Good luck meng. Hope to see you around.
1991 ef sedan

just checked out your car and its my cars twin brother!
how much did they charge you to weld the quarters in?
1991 ef sedan

started tear down and ofcourse ran into a few problems! Sad

tried everything to take these out!

and i have a nice pretty crack!
89 LX SOHC ZC

That sucks.
1991 ef sedan

finally got around to disassemble the d16.

turns out the crack is bad.

so most likely just going to sell it for parts!

and called it a day!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Thats no good sorry to here that.
Ksawi

ouch! that's bad idea
4dred6

i know its old but its a badass build
FlatTireRacer

Hit me up about the 'parts' bit! Just bought a white EX that needs a new bottom end.
1991 ef sedan
