1990 EF3 Si SedanWell people I took the plunge and bought some parts for putting a B16A into my Sedan.. I've couple of things i'm going to do like a mini wire tuck, relocate the battery i'll use the CRX front hubs and calipers because these are bigger then the Si brakes, change the brake servo and master cylinder, new timing belt water pump and tensioner and i'll most likely get rid of the power steering and replace it with a manual rack.. The swap will be starting next Monday so i'll be sure to get plenty of pictures of it all happening!
First on the list is an EE8(EF8) CRX VT
Innovative EF B Series engine mounts
98 Spec JDM DC2 Integra Type R Throttle Body 67mm (STD is 62mm)
DC2 Integra Type R Airbox
And i've got my DC2 Integra Type R Mugen Twinloop to go on.. And I should have a set of cams aswell to go in!
Let me know what you all think,
Brian

Alot of nice parts to make some serious N/A power, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Nissan dont come close. This was the powerhouse till the K came out.

To be honest i was like that at the start and wanted to stick with the original engine just because its so rare.. But the more i thought about it i wanted to change it.. The gearbox was whining bad, the sump was wrung and was leaking and there was other bits about it annoying me so just said what the hell i'll go for it.
Plus the engine/car i got has full honda service history so i know the condition its in!

Nice one Brian I think I can finally push ahead with mine now too.. No money til now.. Wher did you pick up the CRX
|
br-
|
Well just updating this..
Started work Monday morning and finished this evening.. So far the CRX is now stripped the engine is out has been fitted with cams, timing belt, tensioner and water pump all Original Honda parts.
As of tonight engine is out of the sedan and the wiring is nearly done! Should have got the B16 fitted tonight but we had to leave early.. And we should have been working on it tomorrow but I got called into work.. So thursay the sedan should be up and running a B16A
All the hard work is out of the way now and we can concentrate on fitting the engine and wiring right.. So far everything has went smooth aswell and we haven't had any major problems!
Anyway i'll update this again and get some pictures up asap!

Can't wait to get it up and running now Should have the engine in tomorrow and fingers crossed everything goes ok and it fires up first time..
Paul - Nope didn't need to use any of the loom off the CRX, just the PW0 ECU. I had to use the sedans ZC loom and connect it to the B16 then just run my wires for vtec and the second 02 sensor!

First turn of the key it fired right up and idled nice aswell.. But won't really know how its doing untill I take it out for a drive! You don't know what loud is till you hear one of them running with no manifold
And exactly how you see it is how we left it.. It got too late to do any more.. I'd say there is about 2 days work in total left in it and then i can take her out for the maiden voyage!

Just back from the garage tonight... Got the shift linkage all connected, exhaust fitted vacuum lines all sorted and finished the wiring.. And it now has no CEL so i'm happy
All thats left for saturday is fit the shafts, fill it up with coolant and ready for the road..
The whole wire tuck had to take a back seat as it an easier said then done kind of thing and if i had started into one i doubt i'd of had the car on the road at all this year and it could have caused me wiring probs especially while changing the engine..
Anyway i forgot to bring a camera once again so a crappy picture off my phone will have to do!

I had the best intentions to do a wire tuck. Then when you look at how much effort it will take i lost all motivation.

Thats it EF Fi Hondas are pretty bad when it comes to wiring in the engine bay.. I will be putting the battery in the boot but thats the most of it..

Don't think so Paul due in work Sunday night.. I would like to get up for the March one in the EF but it still needs some stupid bits like the Paradas put on the wheels, exhaust welded etc... Are you going up?
As for the rocker cover i'm going to give it the standard black look, I love clean black covers Do you know anywhere to get VHT Wrinkle paint, place in England do it but its working out like 30euro a can!!!!

Have some cans at home Brian will bring one sunday if you want. Can meet you on the way going to the court..
Can show you the results I had too, sprayed a plug cover and came up savage just give it loads of heat!!

Paul, where about did you pick up a can?
All finished!! Still some small loose ends to tie up but nothing major, has a slight miss fire and hesitation around 3000rpm but i'll get onto that soon shouldn't be a problem!

Wel bit of an update but no pictures yet!
Car is up and running and vtecing away with everything working as should! Still have to get around to putting in the Recaros, but they are already on EF rails so straight swap in
Only situation i'm in is with the powersteering.. I've no pump for it as the CRX had a manual rack so i'm in 2 minds weather or not to keep it....
Hope to get a full shoot this weekend!

If you can put up with the low ratio of the power steering rack, without the power assist you should keep it. Great for tracking!

What's the ABS like?
On the old CA Accords with ABS, i was reading that the system actually waits for a second wheel to lock before the ABS started managing the brake application.
Is it something like this? What are the brakes like, does it stop well? I'd love to have ABS.
|
Clipse
|
Yea I miss my non power steering rack and pinion... I still have it, and I will get around to putting it in this 4 door at some point, but then again I was thinking about keeping my PS only because it's an EX... I dunno though!
|
br-
|
ABS is ok nothing special really.. I only felt it ever come in once and that was on the way home from the garage the night before last and it didnt take much for it to come in. Brakes are the moment are pretty shit to be honest they need new discs and pads... But i'll be fitting vtec front hubs which use 262mm brake calipers and discs. When I get the hubs on i'll be after a set of 282mm Prelude 2.2 Vtec calipers to put on...
|
~Sp33~
|
Does it have all round discs?
|
br-
|
Yeah discs all round! All EF Si's had discs front and back..
Anyway bit a bummer went to fit my Recaros but the rails are different Its strange because they came out of an 89 25XT Hatch, I'd have thought all EF rails would have mounted the same... Anyway guess not so i'm going to make up something now..

Oh, and the rail's - the hatch ones where designed to maximise rear passenger foot space apparently. That's why it differs from the sedan.

Ok bit of an update been really busy with exams, work and trying to get all the small bits tied up after the swap.
Anyway as of last night and today i've got my new tires on Yokohama Parada Spec2 and made up the brackets last night to fit the Recaros to the standard rail and have the driver side in place just need to get the passanger side seat in!
Best news so far was last weekend the car got dyno'd and made a very healthy 167bhp! I was delighted with that..
|
ThurmanMerman
|
Nice job on the dyno. That car looks awesome. Whats up with your exhaust in the pic?
|
HRspec
|
Well done that man.
Car is looking so nice.
Good turnaround fitting it all.
I myself dont like the power steering, i feel a better response especially driving at speed with a non pas setup.
On the crx most disconnect the abs as it really doesnt work that well and remove the whole system as it weighs a ton. Probably same for the sedan. Alot of crxs have abs sensor problems and very hard to find replacement sensors.
The uk crx seat rails are different to the jdm rails as the uk ones are able to move further back, so if your a big cunt like me i fitted them to my jdm import crx

Yea, that muffler looks like it is hangin' on. . .barely. .
Get that twin loop in there. . I am anxious to see and hear what that sounds like on the sedan.

Br-, would you be able to tell me how many metal rods are holding your trunk lid open?
Just wondering if Honda's answer to adding a extra weight in form of a spoiler was overcome by more rods or bigger rods.
I'm having trouble keeping my trunk open over here.
Cheers.

Must update this, not much progress really its been sitting in the garden the last 2 months...
I finally got to the bottom of my driveshaft problem and picked up a DA6 Integra XSI axle which I needed..
Both Recaros and in.. I sold the Mugen Twinloop and picked up a Spoon N1 instead and i've also got a DC Sports 4-1 manifold to go on just need to get the 2 o2 bungs welded in!

There are 2 rods.. It actually won't hold itself open unless its fully up any other position and it justs falls down and closes again!

Big update due on this which i'll do in the next few days.. Took the last week off work to get it fully finished in time for a car show over here in Ireland which happened yesterday called japfest, it was a total wash out with rain though but i had some great fun on track in the sedan and it performed great! Anyway i was up to my eyes getting it ready its now got a full custom stainless exhaust from the manifold back with no baffles and a Spoon N1 and is now sitting on Tein Type HA coilovers.. These pics will have to do for the moment let me know what you thinK!

It really did handle great and i only just fitted EF8 CRX SiR hubs and brakes with VTTR racing pads and they did the job really well.. The only down fall and it really showed up bad in the wet was the lack of an LSD i just couldn't get grip coming out of a corner!
Do any of you have any experience of the cable to hydraulic kits that hasport and innovative do?

Cleaned up the engine bay a good bit, fusebox moved to inside the car, map sensor reloacted etc... Have a DC Sports 4-1 to go onto it aswell just have to get the bungs welded into it for the 2 o2 sensors!

Looking clean.
On the obd1 engines, the map sensor sits on top of the throttle body, eliminating the vacuum lines that run at the back of the intake manifold. I swapped mine over because the line kept leaking

Yep if you see the first page I got a 64mm ITR Throttle body but since sold it on, one of the reasons I got it was to get rid of the map sensor on the bulkhead!

Think i'll save doing any mods on this engine.. I'll get the car set up 100% running this engine and then aim at fitting a B18C ITR engine into it!
