1988 DX sedan

Whatsup guys, been browsing this forum for a good little while now simply because I enjoy sedans. I owned a 1991 SI hatch but it was recently stolen and stripped. But the D16 wasn't touched. Long story short I ended up getting a blue LX sedan shell from a buddy for a great price. Bay had already been shaved and painted but just needs some TLC, threw a seat in my hatch and drove it to my buddys house to start swapping the motor. The LX was previously automatic but they swapped it to manual. So far everything is just about set up; engine mounted, wires tucked but ran into a few speed bumps and also I started my job again this week so I havent been able to make a trip out there. Well enough of the terribly put together run on sentences, hah... Basically this is my daily, but I do enjoy all of the rare parts that the EF's offer so I will be throwing some goodies on her. But nothing crazy for the engine for now, I love my D16 too much.

About to take her out of the hatch..

Bay all prepped and ready for the D

Picked up this for my hatch just before it was stolen, going to see if it will fit in the LX

Rear fogs I also had on my hatch but took them off to mount them better the day before it was stolen. Lucky me on that one I guess..

I also have some USDM 90-91 front fogs but I really want some EF2 JDM round fogs, I am really searching for any rare goodies for my sedan. So please feel free to PM me if anyone has some good stuff for sale. I also have some ZC hatchback tail lights for sale or trade if anyone is into it. They are great condition and for a 90-91 hatchback.

And for those of you who enjoy wagons here is my AK shuttle that we are doing a full restoration on. Its a 1985 push start 4WD. Shes a beaut!

If you feel up to it, I have a build on civic wagon for it, titles "The Third Gen Turd"

Anyways, enjoy!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Welcome.  Sad to hear about the hatch but I'm glad it was a gateway for a sedan.  I've seen you post on Facebook.  Keep watching those groups and you're bound to find some rare goodies.

If you don't end up using that map light please let me know.  I'd love to buy it from you.

The wagon is awesome BTW.
89CivicSi

nice

Welcome. I'm gonna have to join Facebook to find these parts Shocked

Welcome to the site man. Love the build.

welcome, nice scoop on the sedan, never seen a third gen wagon before, that thing is awesome.

Thanks a lot man, it was a huge bummer with the whole situation with the hatchback. I am still tracking down my parts for it. Lucky for me the thieves aren't very smart so I was able to track down a few of them fairly easily. I will keep you in mind for the map light, I searched a long time to find one though. Razz
TheGreatBacon

And thanks everyone else for the warm welcome. Cant wait to get this thing running so I can start working on cleaning her up. And yes the 3rd gens are very hard to come by, especially the push start 4WD's. Its a beautiful car but slow as hell. hah
fij1

Welcome fellow new guy!

Oh crap, sorry to hear about your hatch mate Sad

Will be keeping an eye on this thread to see what you come up with! Gotta love the parts that come with these 4th Gens Smile

That wagon is a gem!
89 LX SOHC ZC

Welcome sucks about the ive been there its not cool.  Looks like your off to a good start on the sedan cant wait to see more of it and nice shuttle.
TheGreatBacon

Well not much progress on the sedan yesterday, just some little aesthetics while we wait for some parts to arrive. Gave the carpet a much needed shampoo, also painted the side moldings and mirrors. One of the previous owners installed side skirts on her that looked terrible so I will probably end up putting some wagon ones on eventually. Also put an extension on my shifter in the wagon, I dig the look of it.
Before

After

Really hoping things start going a little smoother this week, going out to my buddys Thursday to try and make a full days progress. We will see where it goes from there. Enjoy!
stormdrop

like the shifter, and man, cars dont come with cool seat fabric patterns like that anymore.
TheGreatBacon

Your right about that one, some of the third gen wagon interior patterns are pretty awesome. Thanks man
TheGreatBacon

Still not much progress, had a bunch of problems with a fuel line. Ended up having to order a replacement line after a week of troubleshooting. Long story short, I have just been stocking up on parts and trying to get rid of a few accessories that I had for my hatchback to make room for sedan related parts.

Found a blue audio console and picked up an equalizer as well. Had a replica personal box in the hatch but I guess the thieves didn't like the decal because they ripped it off. Ended up putting it on this ash tray, I dig the look even if its fake. Razz

Picked up some 16" Carving Head 40's, pretty stoked on these even though they have some bad rash on two of the rims.

And last but not least an SIR bumper with fogs and lip, tried to dig as much as I could on how this will sit on a USDM sedan front end but it seemed like everyone said either that it wont fit at all or that you just need to trim the USDM support to the curves of it. Got it for a great price so if it doesn't work out ill just keep the fog lights and sell the bumper. If anyone knows of a write up with valid information about this let me know, I have seen in done before so I know its possible.

Also picked up an air refiner from a first gen honda legend, looks very similar to the EF2 air refiner. Hopefully some actual progress will be made in the next two weeks..
90edbox

Man Im really interested to see how your front end comes out I love the look of the wrap around bumper lights and round fogs
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Nice stuff dude! Can't wait to see it put together.
4dred6

nice wheels. i think you just need to put some spacers on the bumper support brackets.
~Sp33~

Cardboard on your paint to protect it while you're dropping the motor in! That's ingenious, haha. Will be stealing that idea.

I've been following your resto on the AH over on HCW, really thorough and looks great... Good to hear you've gotten yourself into a sedan!
TheGreatBacon

Finally started making more progress. The dash currently on the LX is so brittle. It sucks to say it but I will eventually it will need to be replaced, whenever I find a blue one in good condition. As of right now I am primarily concerned with having transportation besides my bike. Well everything is looking good except the exhaust needs some work to pass inspection and so that its not obnoxiously loud. Eventually I will put a little dual tip pea shooter on it. We put the bumper and fenders on today, finished up the auto to manual conversion that was in the works when I bought the shell. Also started putting the carpet back in, ignore the shift boot... Im taking that shit out, now I just need a manual blue cluster!

This Anti-theft sticker is on my buddies EX sedan, if Im not mistaken it came with the Honda 3000 cassette decks. I could be wrong though, just thought it was pretty rad

Finally got the valve cover back from powder coat for the wagon, pretty excited to get it running. She hasn't gotten much play in the past month.

If anyone has a set of bumper lenses and housing for a 90-91 that they would let go for cheap let me know. Dont really care if they are cracked.
89ef2

Those are some nice pick up on parts. Looking good.

Thanks man, these are going to be the first set of really nice wheels that I have owned. I know you have to cut down the USDM bumper support to fit the SIR bumper, from what I have seen its a lot of cutting. Might just end up getting the JDM support as well. If you know anything else about it any info would be appreciated. Too much controversy on the fitment of it.

Yeah the cardboard idea works great, beats scratched paint! Glad to hear people actually enjoy that thread. Hopefully it will get going again soon. Razz

Nice stuff man.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Good to see her coming together.
stormdrop

not sure if im more excited to see the sedan or wagon getting finished first, both are superb rides.  Cool
TheGreatBacon

Thanks guys, the wagon is a different story. It hasn't been fired up for almost a year now so it might not be too happy when that time comes. Also it needs a full exhaust. Hopefully by September it will be running again. Going out to my buddies shop tomorrow, if everything goes smooth I will be driving the LX home.
boxboy90

hey what wheels are those on the sedan in the one pic look like aero brand wheels (nascar reps)
TheGreatBacon

bassett racing is the brand
~Sp33~

Ha, my daily has that same sticker on the window!
TheGreatBacon

Well, she's up and running. Haven't had time to take any pictures lately, hopefully I will today, been slowly adding accessories to it this week. I snapped a picture of the map light mounted, still need to route the wiring through the driver side pillar. Its just been so damn hot out!

More pictures to come!
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Awesome!
~Sp33~

Very neat  Cool
TheGreatBacon

So I got around to snapping a few pictures yesterday, I picked up a few things from the junk yard the other day. A EX trunk, front filler piece, bumper lights, rear floor mats, trunk tail light covers and a hatch shifter console. Dropped the damn trunk when I was carting it out in the wheel barrow, but it still looks better then what I had. The hatch console fits weird around the auto belts, so if anyone has a blue sedan one help me out! Put in the lower audio console with EQ the other day. I have a gathers cassette deck I will put in once I get it fixed.

Also mounted this air refiner I bought a little while back, it came out of a first gen honda legend. It fits really tight with the third break light, once I find my grinder or buy a new one I will trim the back of the break light housing.

Cleaned these floor mats too, they look good but there is no saving the drivers side.

Have a few things planned today for the sedan, stay tuned..
Chaife

Looks awesome man!   that air refiner is the tits!

Thanks guys, having some troubles with ole' girl right now. I am getting terrible MPG and there is a faint smell of gas in the cabin. I have heard a lot of people say to check the timing, o2 sensor etc. But chaife and I are thinking that I have a leak somewhere. Also I my idle is acting weird, sometimes when I am at a light my car dies, also when I am taking turns it does the same. But when I let it idle and sit for a minute it stays at around 1000 RPM's, sometimes for a few minutes other times for less than 30 seconds. Its very strange, I am thinking the IACV could use a cleaning. Any suggestions or thoughts would be awesome.
Chaife

Everything legit and running better after your most recent visit up here?
TheGreatBacon

Picked up some oem grills and hood from a sedan at pull a part yesterday. Pretty stoked that no one grabbed the grills yet. Most people around here don't really care about that kind of stuff though. Picked up a few other random things as well. I will post some more pictures in the next few days. Moving to a new house this week that has a garage! Pretty excited about that as well..

Chaife, everything is running 10x better then what it was. Changed the oil and picked up a new drain plug the other day as well. Sometimes it runs a bit lean but nothing compared to how it was a few days ago. More updates later today hopefully!
4dred6

front end looks so sexy  Cool
TheGreatBacon

Gave here a bath today, first time I have washed the body since I got it. Washed the bay as well, started polishing the valve cover and got a few little clips to tidy up cables here and there. Gave the seats a good scrub last night and also  painted a few trim pieces black. Been moving this past week hence the lack of content. But new place has a garage so there will be more pictures to come.

Here she is waiting to be pulled into her new home. Very Happy

Hopefully will be getting my enkei 92's back in the next few weeks, finally got a solid word from the detective saying he is going to pick them up Tuesday... Long story short, stay tuned!

Took off my rear bumper today, was planning on putting a rear lip on that I found at a junk yard. Didn't realize how much longer sedan rear bumpers are than hatches, need to pick up a Volvo lip next time I go to a yard. Stoked to find out this rear bumper has the mounting points for the rear fog light brackets (my hatch did not). Cut out the holes, cut the support, fed the harness through the same hole the license plate wires are and called it a night. I have a few things coming in the mail this next week, wheels are supposed to come on Monday! Thinking I might put in my daisy blinds tomorrow... Hmmm

More pictures tomorrow!
Chaife

looks awesome bud!!   in for more.

Good stuff  Cool

X2 Looks really nice man

And be careful with those blinds they have to have the smallest screws and nuts i have ever seen..And u have to cut alittle off the metal brackets
TheGreatBacon

Wired up the switch today, getting a different rear fog switch in the mail sometime next but I didn't want to wait. Razz

Lights off

Lights on

Repainted the oem grills that I picked up the other, came out pretty nice. day
TheGreatBacon

Thanks for the kind words fellas, still working out a few kinks here and there. In search of a few blue interior pieces if anyone knows of a blue sedan in your area. Razz

wat front lip is that
TheGreatBacon

It's from a Volvo I pulled thath from a wagon but if I'm not mistaken they have them on the Volvo sedans as well, early 90's models.
boosted ef2

Car is looking great and I'm having the same trouble looking for a blue ebrake cover lol..

And the lip is from the 90 -93 I think volvo 740 turbo/na wagons or sedans
Saw like 6 today at the yard

TheGreatBacon

Thanks guys, she is getting there for sure. I have a few serious leaks that need to be addressed . Somehow I am getting puddles in the all of the footwells except driver side.. Well I am there too but it's not as bad and I know where it's coming from. The strange thing is that the water is only in the center of the floor so that's what has me stumped; given that most leaks I have seen in previous cars I have owned come from the doors, seals, tail lights etc. It only is bad when I drive in the rain, and it creates puddles in my damn carpet. Any ideas!?

On a side note, got a few things in the mail Very Happy The carving heads need complete restoration but I couldn't pass them up.

Got a few new vinyl decals off eBay
89 LX SOHC ZC

Man that's some major leakage I wish I could help you figure that one out but I have no idea where to look other than the shift boot or one of the low grommets in the engine  compartment.  Those are some nice wheels.

Have you pulled the carpet up?  There are plugs in the floor board.  They could be missing or needing to be re-sealed.
boosted ef2

Maybe u have a hole in ur floor somewhere? And those wheels are sexy!! Cant wait to c them redone
TheGreatBacon

Thanks for the help guys

Stripped the interior, and sprayed her down yesterday to see where all of this water was coming from, as I suspected its coming from a few holes that didn't have plugs/grommets in the bay. So I am working on that over the next few days. One of the previous owners also had an aftermarket stereo system which he cut the stock wiring for the speakers and wired aftermarket through out the car. Which I didn't mind at first but I came to find out that the speakers were wired all to one side of the car, which was drivinge crazy when I would adjust the volume fade from drivers side to passenger side with the stock cassette deck; if that makes sense... Needless to say I pulled all of the wiring out and re-wired it back to stock. Must have pulled out 30ft of wires. More pictures to come today

Glad you found the problem and you probably lost a few pounds by removing that power wire.
89 LX SOHC ZC

Glad you found the problem.
TheGreatBacon

Thanks guys, still need to address a few of the holes in the bay; going to keep the carpet out until that is done.

Picked one of these clips up from autozone in hopes that it would correct my warped center garnish a bit.

Close but no cigar

I really don't want to hunt down a center garnish that isn't warped, so maybe I will try something else.
Put this new vinyl decal on, looks a lot better.

Plugged a battery up to the wagon yesterday, woop!

Thanks man, I think over time they just get warped. I thought about taking a heat gun to the back side of it but I don't want it to crack.
TheGreatBacon

Got a few parts in the mail from Moe at EF parts, trying to decide if I want to wire the fender markers as a constant when my lights are on or just as blinkers. Hmmm..

Looking for a good vinyl/plastic paint to fix up this arm rest as well as a faded spot on my dash if anyone has a good shade of blue they would recommend me.

Also got my windshield replaced today, woohoo! Although they couldn't put it under warranty for leaks because of some bad rust spots. Im hoping the new windshield fixed the leak though, we will see!

Also I am not getting any sound to my driver side speaker, guess thats why it was all wired to the passenger side.. My guess would be that the wire came loose in the harness over time, have yet to look into the problem thoroughly though. I just know that its not the speaker.
4dred6

Sad  i need a windshield
~Sp33~

Hope that leak isn't from your heater core. Are you losing engine coolant?
89civicracer

Nice.. i HATE leaks!
Chaife

I checked it pretty close,   definitely not heater core, lucky.  Even with as many times as I had it in and out.
Shouldn't be too leaky now,  after TheGreatBacon spent some time up here yesterday.    Cool
TheGreatBacon

~Sp33~ wrote:

Nope, it wasn't from the heater core... Thankfully! Its from a few holes in the engine bay that didn't have grommets. I sprayed her down on the front end the other day and watched as water trickled in from the bay. Now I just need to plug up a few of the smaller holes as well as pick up some heat/noise insulation. It gets toasty in there after an hour or so of driving. Hopefully no moar leakz! Just waiting for some rain to find out...Or Ill just spray her down with the hose again.
TheGreatBacon

Well, I pulled my dash today in hopes of swapping it with the 89 dash that I was given, after comparing the 91 harness to the 89 harness I realized this wasn't going to be as simple as I had hoped for. Pretty much everything is different, I can't use my 91 harness on the dash/cluster either because the wiring is all different as well as the plugs. I looked around for someone who has attempted this swap and have has no luck finding anything, if anyone can help me please do so; I really don't want to have to put my old dash back in.

On a side note I had to bite the bullet and put a set of used tires on my carving heads, I just don't have the founds to restore them yet. So I figured why not..

89 LX SOHC ZC

Man that thing looks good on those wheels.  I don't know much about the dash harness but I do know you can swap the wires to the correct plugs for the 88-89 cluster.
TheGreatBacon

Yeah, I decided to give that a try. I think the 89 defrost switch can be wired to the 91 harness as well, cluster dimmer cant and hazard switch I still have yet to decide what to do with.

And thanks, cant wait to get all four lug caps on them.
89ef2

wheels look sick!!!! One day ill get mine on.
TheGreatBacon

Thanks man, have had a bad turn of events happen with the sedan. Dove into this dash swap that I had anticipated would take two days tops; given that it was an 89 dash going into my 91. So I had to re-wire the cluster on my 91 dash harness, also did the same to the defrost switch.

I had everything working; seat belt was responding, check engine light came on in accessory, trunk light was on when the trunk was up etc. Only issue I really had was the cluster lights illuminated when the lights were off and would shut off when the lights were flipped on. Now here comes the dumb part on my end.. I set the cluster down on the floorpan to go close the trunk and a guess a few exposed wires touched, after this happened the only thing that responded in the cluster are the brights, blinkers and hazards. When I would turn on my lights when the key was out of the ignition the relay would begin to click rapidly but when the lights were on and the key was in the ignition the relay didn't click. So I thought to myself I could have a dead battery based on the fact that I had been toying with the car for a few hours. So I went and picked up my spare battery swap it out and now the relay clicks even when the key is in the ignition and I turn the lights on. Now my car wont start at all. I think when I set the cluster down something might have gotten shorted or something like that. I checked fuses and all of my grounds appear to be good. I would really like to fix the problem before I put this dash back in, any help would be great. Thanks guys
TheGreatBacon

Anyone? Its like Im getting no response from the cluster to the motor, but signals and defrost work on the dash harness. Lights all work but relay clicks when I turn on the lights. Going to try and solder the main relay tomorrow, even though I tested a spare that I have and it still clicked like crazy when I turned the lights on.  I truly am stumped..

Did u check all the fuses and stuff?
TheGreatBacon

Yeah man, fuses and grounds are all good. Checked for a short on the front of the fuse box and everything going into the ECU but have yet to check behind the fuse box. It has to be something that I am over looking, the car isn't at my house which really sucks, I was house sitting for my mom and ended up having to leave it there. Going to head over there today and take another stab at finding the problem. I really just want to at least get it back to my house. I am going to check the fuses again today to make sure I didn't miss one. A thought crossed my mind that it could be the ignition switch but its not likely given that the problem started from wires touching each other, which I would think would be a fuse....  Rolling Eyes  Crying or Very sad Just wish I had the knowledge to diagnose it

Yeah man, it would have been. But by the time I entertained that idea it was already too late, dash was out and all that fun stuff. I might end up pulling one sometime in the future anyways. Got her running today, and I am honestly not sure what it was. I soldered the main relay, checked fuses again and found one 10a that was dead; alternator solenoid I think is what it was. Tried starting her up a few times and the damn spare battery I had was dead! So I swapped it back to the original that I thought was dead in the first place and it started right up. Question

Yea the alternator fuse will keep the car from starting I found that out the hard way.....glad u got it running

WTEF_1102 wrote:

Planning on it!

Although I am having cluster issues, nothing is responding in the cluster besides blinkers, hazards and brights still. When the key is out of the ignition and I turn on my lights its like a rave in my car. Cluster and ecu both flicker like crazy and the main relay clicks.

Thanks everyone else about the wheels. Sorry I cant quote everyone but I do appreciate it.  Very Happy

My main relay did the same thing and I just bought a new one and it stopped.  Also how hard is it to take out the engine and do a wire tuck?
WTEF_1102

TheGreatBacon

Pretty much you just need to know what plug goes to what and how far to extend it so the wires are able to tuck through the fender wells. And get creative with it. Fortunately for me I picked this shell up from Chaife and his buddy Josh; the auto to manual swap was pretty much complete and the battery was already relocated to the trunk so all that was left was the fuse box and tucking all the harness, sensors etc. Chaife was a huge help with that as well since this was a learning process for me. Just check forums and all that, there is info for days on wire tucks. From a mild tuck to a complete tuck and whatever in between.
TheGreatBacon

Been slaving over the ol' bucket this past week trying to get it all together for a little local meet we have here in Charlotte the first Saturday of every month. Put the dash all back together; completely re-wired the rear fogs, switched to a different switch and tucked all the wiring nice and tidy. Also finished the cb7 arm rest and picked up a new shift knob. A few other random things, yada yada yada; Ill take more pictures tomorrow. Cool I also got some SEM shadow blue and touched up this dash, its almost a perfect match!
