'88 Rat sedan

I guess you could say I followed TheGreatBacon (a user on here) over here.  Though I have been lurking for a lil while.  He and I have been hangin' out and doin' Sedan stuff lately...   Helping to build his sedan has really got me motivated to get mine doing all the right things.
Enough talk...   Picture time.

Chaife

I've gotten busy with it since TheGreatBacon's sedan is running.
New Front Top hats,   in an attempt to go even lower.

Cut the eBay threaded coil sleeves

Coil prototype

mocked everything up

Cut hole in Hood for shock shaft to go through.

Finished and painted

Have you rolled your fenders?
Chaife

Quite a lot,  yes.    More of that is now in this little car's future.    Wink    lol

WOW! i kinda like it..  Confused
jon_akers

I came. A lot. Absolutely love that sedan.
boxboy90

i always wanted to do a beer tap shift knob! keep the pics coming...are u  planning to continue the rat theme or is this just a heat of the moment deal?
4dred6

I like it, should be sitting lower with that setup, maybe the uca is hitting the tower, but I definitely like it.
~Sp33~

Pretty interesting. Lots of detail.
Chaife

I appreciate it guys.   Oh it will be sitting lower...   There is no motor or trans in it currently.   (goes back in this week)
So it doesn't have weight in it right now.   (just asked a friend to stand in the bay for reference. [in the pic.])
UCA's aren't in contact with anything yet..   We'll see soon though.

I wish my JD tap handle was as cheap as the beer ones...    Laughing
To answer your question,   this is not spur of the moment.   This car has spent it's past 3 years as a Rat, and will finish it's life as a Rat.
I play with Honda cars a lot,  and get tired of seeing literally thousands of EG and EK hatches on XXRs or Rotas...  I have more fun when working on this car than I do with ANY other HONDA that I own or my friends have.   There is actually an interesting story to this car (I love HONDA stories).

A very good friend of mine, I'll say.. basically "abandoned" this car in my yard, mid "project".. A little over 3 years ago.
I grew extremely tired of looking at it back then.. and seeing as he would likely never touch it again, I convinced him to sign the title over to me, in trade for the work. I am ALWAYS down to contribute to his again, "projects".  (I've built him several cars).
I had decided to throw it back together, and chuck it up in the yard with a FOR SALE sign on it to clear some space and grab some cash..
After having just 2 or 3 different guys come and look at it, only to low ball the WAHZZOO out of me because of it's paint, or lack there of... lol Knowing that my swap alone was worth more than their 3 offers combined.. Mad I had decided to start to spruce up some instead.  Wouldn't you know it,  I fell for the stupid little thing..   And now it's part of my collection.
stormdrop

cars tend to do that, its a love/hate thing. lol
Chaife

The rat is finished!   Drove it all around town last night.
Drags exhaust everywhere..  with about a 1-1/4" of ground clearance.   and another 3 threads (1/8th inch) left on the rear shock collars.
More pics by the end of tonight,  after work.
EF Sedan Enthusiast

4dred6

awesome, my mudflaps are in the middle of HONDA and still draggin   Twisted Evil i really like it man.
Chaife

Pics as promised,   the ride quality with the top hats cannot be compared to standard stroke coil setup..
Having lots of fun with the 'ol car lately..   This car gets more looks in town than any car I've ever ridden in..

Here is a closer look at the engine bay and suspensions orientation.

Chaife

Little update, wen't to Cars & Coffee in Downtown Charlotte, NC.
The car was far better received than I could have ever imagined...
It was cool to watch people walk right past Ferrari's and Lambo's and up to the Rat.

This little man was soo pumped about the Rat, he even drug his dad from across the parking lot to come have a look..

New Rotors, got a lil bored and cut a very unique design in my new set of rotors.
Kind of Spoon inspired...

My tap handle was touching the steering wheel lightly, Reworked the shifter design a bit.
Now has 2 Chinese shift extenders.. one of which I heated and bent.

With "Neutral" selected

With Fif selected (fifth gear)

Wish i had the balls to this to my ride. I love it . You must get a lot question about it.what is the number one question you get asked about beside the common ones, how do you drive this car so low?

lol thanks dude.   The number one question;
would have to be a pretty fair tie between something like "why is your car broken?,  Why are the wheels like that?" lol or something generally pertaining to the owl..
I get a lot of questions about fitment, and how there is any clearance.
TheGreatBacon

Bahahaha, I would just laugh if someone asked me why my car is broken.
HondaJunkie

Love the car it's nice not seeing a typical cookie cutter ef im glad you have put your own style into this. Im excited for more updates this is one of those builds you can't guess what will go on next.

Thanks a lot dude,   That's actually a huge part of the idea behind it.
here's a little update,  This came in.. I'm super excited about it actually.  It's one of those things that would receive a lot of hate on another car, But I feel it works here..    Very Happy

HondaJunkie

Nice is that supposed to be kind of like a Goldwing emblem.
4dred6

thats sick
Chaife

No,  lol  it's definitely a Chinese piece.   Not Honda Genuine by any means.     Razz

I LOVE this! Your style is very different and I commend you for being one of the very few that can pull this look off with the ef sedan chassis. Solid props to you my brother...solid props to you
Chaife

Thanks guys!!    That's awesome  WTEF,  how did they turn out?
4dred6

Love it
Chaife

I've had some friends sending me things for the Rat  lately.
I sanded a place on the hood to create a good backdrop from the new custom stickers a buddy sent.. This changed the colors around a bit and added good contrast.
You can see the layers of life this beast has to it, also I peppered the hood with hammertone rattle can while the vinyl's backing was still in place to give it a little border and make it pop. Time to let mother nature do the rest. Plans to pull this decal in a year or two to see what's exposed. and then clear over the hood to give it that ghosted look (into the rust).

I had intended on painting the hood a vibrant candy color before laying this vinyl decal, but couldn't get the quote I wanted from any of my body shop homies..

Here are some rolling shots from Instagram.  I added a new feature....   My runaway/ huck fin/  hobo stick..

TheGreatBacon's EF sedan truly has come a long way.

Just a few more months and I can actually do stuff to my car :/
Chaife

Wen't out and fired some shots of the Rat with a friend that is majoring in photography at App. State. I learned a bit.

It's certainly interesting. Cool

LOL   what would they pull me for?  The Owl?
I drive like a granny,  obey all the laws, don't rice around town.
The car is legit.    It makes me happy that the car produces that reaction all the time though..  Last month I overheard a group of guys walking past that saw the NC plate and current inspection and couldn't believe that it past.
But it's an '88 and is exempt from everything in this state except for a safety inspection once a year.  Which consist of the lights  and horn.  Mr. Green

UNCC meet tonight at 730 if you can make it...its on top of north deck every tuesday night

Sweet pic. Saw it on Facebook

Sweet pics dude.
Chaife

Drug her up on the rack today for a proper laser alignment.  Shouts out to my boy for lettin' me sneak onto his rack last week, for the morning.  (took a while)
Had to use 2 or 3 boards stacked to get the car to clear the rack's hydraulics in the center.  Left some pretty mean scars on her too.. (his rack)
The little Rat is all squared up now.

Chaife

Droppin' off some recent photos too.    Very Happy

Articulation.

Chaife

Smacked my oil drain plug on the road a few hundred miles back..
It was a brand new plug too,  maybe it's head was too large.
It pulled on the threads pretty good.. and started leaking. I had to replace it with a self-tapping plug.

Also,  when I rolled the car off the alignment rack the front bumper got torn clean off.   New bumper mount.    Shocked  Cool

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Nice pix.  Love the skyline backdrop.  Is that Charlotte?
4dred6

Sweet  Cool
Chaife

It is Charlotte,   Beautiful place.  I love the architecture.
The Metro area and city as a whole is very clean compared to other major cities in the US.  I think.

New pics,  It was a snowy week here in the South East. So the Rat has been parked.
I've been a bit busy building a CRX lately too,  so no updates to speak of.

Chaife

I did a few adjustments to achieve a new ride height.  But we'll have to wait for me to dig her out of that snow pit before we get that update.
It is not accurately depicted well in these shots,  but I'm here to lay them on ya anyway.

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Love the pictures!
Chaife

Thanks Brudda!
Finally got the Junker out for a cruise... I noticed the transmission felt a little tight when I left. F*ZK it! I took off!
Ran around and took care of business, ordered and devoured this burger..... shifter is still feeling stiff..

Went to the mall, and after about 60 miles of hoonin' everywhere, POP!!!!!!!!!! clutch cable gone.

Got her rollin with the starter motor and limped 30-some miles home with some RPM matching..
Rolled all the stop signs that stood in my way..  haha Twisted Evil

Here's the new ride height boys! On new, harder springs. Picture of unloaded car (no passengers).

Yesterday I decked out my cheap-y roof rack with some hemp twine and moldy planks of wood...   I like the more earthy feel it has now... Cool

EF Sedan Enthusiast

Nice
slammedsedan

dude I love your build and I love the rat look I keep looking through the pics your car is sexy
EF Sedan Enthusiast

Agreed
Chaife

Thanks!   I polished up mah chrome wheels a bit...

Before: they were starting to show rust after 2 salty seasons.

Here is a straggler from last week.
TheGreatBacon

Yeah the wood on the rack is perfect; moss growing on it and everything! Very Happy
BruhMan

This sedan is so dope! And you get extra cool points for being from NC! I live in China Grove, a small town about 30 minutes north of Charlotte.

these are my favorite kinds of builds because the true car enthusiast will know that this is something that didn't just happen over night. I love the slow evolving process of this build and what its progressed to.
